Yah really... and it is one thing to say you are getting rid of your bird because you can't care for it anymore (if you are injured, sick, can't afford it, etc.)... but to say it is because it isn't cuddly enough!!!!! I mean honestly, what kind of answers was be expecting???
-
Ahh... it is hot as "you know what" here today. No winds... hot and muggy!! I want some cool weather!!!

Makena eats pellets, fruits and veggies. His treats are dried pasta and some occasional popcorn. We have never given him seeds or nuts, we figure there is enough of that in the pellets themselves. Every morning Makena gets 1/2 of a papaya and 1/2 a cup of a veggie blend (soybeans, carrots, peas, green beans and corn). He gets the same thing at night. He has no problem polishing off the whole thing!! Makena definitely eats more than a grape's worth of fruit. He eats a whole papaya everyday! I figure if we provide him with lots of healthy options it is up to him to choose what he wants. He gets lots of exercise and we monitor his weight very closely.

Yah... so now we are all closer in time!!! Since Hawaii doesn't "celebrate" daylight savings!!

How many people have TAG's and How many have CAG's
Makena replied to Ronda477's topic in The GREY Lounge
Cag here, but I want a Tag some day! -
Yeah, I definitely notice preferences for certain colors. Makena eats all of his pellets is sequence. The red ones are always first! Then the green. I don't know what it is. B)

OMG, your baby is tooooooo cute!! And you guys are a beautiful couple Don't worry about the biting thing, things like that happen... One time my fiance (Andrew) had Makena on his shoulder (he wasn't wearing a shirt). Anyways, Mak slipped and he did the first thing he thought of... grabbed Andrew's arm with his beak. He slid down his arm grabbing on with his beak the whole way... Once Makena finally landed on the floor he had an entire beak full of Andrew's skin. Don't worry it happens!!!! It is nothing against you, it is just your little guy getting scared. You guys will be great parents.. Congratulations!!!

I would like to introduce you to... Priscilla the Pooping Papaya!!!! (Andrew says it looks like she is pooping :silly::silly: :silly:) What the heck it that?!?!? Get me out of here!!!! Priscilla is made out of a papaya body, carrot arms, cucumber legs, popcorn hair, cucumber bra, pellet mouth, pea nose, popcorn kernel eyes and tomato head. The glue was flour and water. I think the fact that Priscilla is bigger than Mak scared him off... O'well, I had fun anyways!!!! LOL!!!

Ahhh!! Brian is toooooo precious, I love it!! Karma for you

As of now, Makena hasn't made one sound that I didn't love. Every little noise, screech, peep, whistle, etc. is music to my ears... Although maybe I am just trying too hard to distinguish actual words out of all that babble :silly: :silly: :silly:!!

If I had a backyard I would pay the shipping to get that sucker here!!! I love it!!!

Dan (this is a little late) but have you ever been to the hitching post in Casmalia? It is way better than McClintocks (in my opinion). You should check it out the next time you are heading out that way! There is also one in Buelton, but I don't think it is as good. http://www.hitchingpost1.com/ When we lived in SLO we used to head to Vandenberg to load up at the commissary... The Hitching Post or the Far Western (in Guadalupe) was always a fav stop!!! And if you ever head into SLO you have to go to Firestone's Grill for an ABC burger.... YUM!!! I am salivating over here! Ahhh how I miss the central coast!!!

Awww... that is wonderful Tari!! She probably is trying to out talk your quakers. Whenever there is noise in the house (radio, tv, vacuum, washer/dryer, us talking, etc) Makena will chat away like crazy!! He needs to be the loudest thing in the house at all times.. LOL!! :silly: :silly: :silly:

Are you seriously getting rid of your grey because "he does not like to be touched all the time"?!?!? That is honestly the worst thing I have ever heard. Did you know anything about greys before you got one????? Makena is my child. He bites me, jumps off me to get to my fiance, makes a huge mess and costs me a ton of money. And even with all that I love him more than you could ever know. He gets fresh cut up fruits and veggies 3 times a day, he is always out and playing and basically gets anything he wants. If he was ever sick I would spend whatever it took to make him healthy again. In my opinion that is what a bird parent should be, someone who shows them unconditional love. To me what you are saying is comparable to giving up a two year old child because they cry too much!!! My heart breaks for your bird, you don't deserve him. I truly hope at the very least you find him new parents that will show him unconditional love. I would seriously reconsider getting another bird, birds don't cuddle. Get a puppy if that's the kind of companion you want. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh... You made a huge mistake...I hope you learn from this.

Well you know I have to add to that.... Had to do some cropping on this shot... only Andrew gets to see the whole thing!!!! Sorry to hijack your thread with pictures Chelsea... We are big show offs!!!!!<br><br>Post edited by: Makena, at: 2007/10/26 22:38

Yah Dan!! Keep on posting!!! You are full of great information and have a great sense of humor!!! :P

I would agree with Bmustee and Judy. Just go for something untreated that is dark or has a pattern. Unfortunately I don't think there is a such thing as bird/cat friendly furniture... Just don't be too disappointed the first time one of your angels decides to break in your new purchase :P :P!!!

I would watch this video... http://www.kaytee.com/companion_animals/birds/hand_feeding/#video It is a video on how to correctly hand feed your bird. Our Makena is going on 6 months and has only been fully weaned for a few weeks. He took 3, 40-50ml feedings a day until 4 and 1/2 months. Then we gave him 2 feedings a day for one week and 1 feeding a day for 1 week. He wasn't fully weaned until 5 months. Every bird is different and will wean at their own time. You said you are feeding him apples but are you giving any other fruits and veggies? I would give him a huge variety of fruits/veggies daily, he will start picking at things and you will soon find what he likes and doesn't like. We weigh Makena about every other day. He eats like a horse and never really lost much weight. He is now about 440g. Weights fluctuate A LOT from grey to grey... which is why it is extremely important to monitor your grey's weight. Sometimes weight loss is the only way of knowing they are sick. You will do fine! Just keep being cautious and read your bird! They usually do a pretty good job of pointing out what they like or don't like

Well it sounds like you already have your project... "Charlie can Think". The best way to show that he thinks would be to have him solve some type of problem. You could come up with some brain teasers and hypothesize that ?% of the time he will pick the right answer or solve the problem. There are a variety of brain teaser toys out there that you can buy. Or you can make up your own. We have a brain teaser toy where you put a treat in the center and you have to line up the outside rings in order to get the treat out. Makena figured out how to do it in about 10 minutes!!! I would say that is a bird that can think... he was faced with a problem and was able to solve it in no time!! I am sure tons of people on here have great ideas for some homemade problem solving ideas! Good luck!!
