1. Awww soooo sweeet You have a nice looking red factor there!
2. Thanks for the info Jazz. We are still trying to get to the bottom of Makena's problem. Our vet thinks he has separation anxiety. He suggested a course of drugs that we aren't too excited about. We will see what happens. Thanks so much for posting your story, it's really nice to read about other possible problems.
3. We finally got our featherless parrot into the vet. He did a gram stain, examined the poo, etc. He says... "There is nothing physically wrong with your parrot... BUT... He does have a psychological disorder and I think you should go to a bird therapist or give him drugs". Ummm... ok... So we basically just paid this guy $150 to tell us our bird is crazy. Anyways, he recommends putting Makena on Haloperidol which is used in the treatment of schizophrenia in humans. We aren't too excited about the idea of putting our bird on crazy amounts of drugs, ESPECIALLY human strength drugs. He said it would probably take many weeks of playing around with the dosages to get it right. He said during that time our bird could be a zombie. Basically it sounded like the bird would be so sedated that he wouldn't have the desire to chew. He also told us he prescribes the drug to A LOT of birds, especially cockatoos. Any thoughts on this drug? We are moving Makena to the mainland in 3 weeks and will have access to one of the top avian vets in the country at that point. We are thinking of waiting to see what he says. I also think that once we move back and get settled again he is going to calm down and hopefully stop his new chewing habit. We have a lot going on in our lives right now and I am sure he is picking up on it. Check out what our little one has done to himself... Thanks in advance!
4. That sounds almost identical to what we are going through with Makena right now. He/she is EXTREMELY obsessed with my fiance. When he went to the mainland for 2 weeks Makena started chewing his/her feathers big time and now has no tail and right wing. Does Obi need to have those injections for the rest of her life? Or is it something that the vet said would go away?

10. I have been going to the gym 5-6 days a week. I do one hour of pretty intense cardio. I have been doing the elliptical lately because one of my knees has been bothering me. I usually fluctuate between level 11 and 12. I make sure I am breathing hard and sweating the whole time! Then I usually do about 30-45 minutes of weights and abs. I like to do free weights for my arms and machines for my legs. I do arms one day and legs another. Abs I do everyday. As for diet. The approach I took to dieting throughout my life was basically cutting out all perceived "bad" things. This never worked for me and I ultimately always gained the weight back. That and I never ate enough. This time I took a different route. I am not cutting out ANY so called forbidden foods or whole food groups for that matter! I have increased my fruit and veggie intake a lot. I have also pretty much completely switched to whole grains. I eat a lot of fish and other lean meats. BUT... If I am craving a steak with mashed potatoes, I have it!! I just eat a small portion, then load up the rest of the plate with lots of veggies. I always try to have my dinner plates consist of 50% veggies, 25% carbs and 25% meat/protein. And I ALWAYS eat when I am hungry. The whole starving thing KILLS your metabolism. So there ya have it! It's been working for me!
11. I am down 23 lbs! Been going to the gym religiously. Hoping to lose a few more before the big day!! Only 17 more days!!!
12. Apparently!! Luckily there is pretty much nothing in our house right now since we are moving. So there wasn't anything he could get into. He eventually waddled down the hall and climbed into bed with us. Little turkey!!
13. Apparently we didn't close one of Makena's food doors last night and Makena got out this morning. He did a nice job of hiding little turds all over the house for us. So that was our little fun easter egg hunt this morning!!!
14. Thank you guys soooooo much for all your great advice!! I think you are right Mark, we do need to make some gradual changes to his routine. We are actually thinking about moving his cage. We are moving soon so he needs to get used to being in a new place. We are also in the process of trying to get him used to his carrier, which he is REALLY hating. I am scared that throughout the course of a 5 hour flight he is going to chew off every last feather!!!
15. Thanks guys for all your comments. We have been misting him with aloe and giving him tons of attention. He is only in his cage when both of us need to leave the house for some reason like a grocery store trip. Other than that usually one of us is always home. We did rearrange his cage and that has been keeping him busy. Hopefully his new feathers come in soon! It scares me that he can't fly!
16. He is 10 months old. We did notice he has some pin feathers coming in.

Post edited by: Makena, at: 2008/03/17 10:53
17. Yes, you read that right... He chewed it off. My fiance went to the mainland for 2 weeks and apparently the frustration of him being gone was too much for lil Makena. He is chewing his feathers big time and we don't know what to do! He is not only chewing on his tail but is also chewing his flight feathers. It's so bad that he can't even fly, something he used to do all the time. I am really worried he is going to seriously hurt himself. He isn't plucking, just chewing off about half of the feather. He eats a pretty good diet. He munches on pellets throughout the day and has 2-3 fresh meals/day. His fresh food usually consists of edamame, green beans, peas and papaya. I am constantly throwing other stuff in there, but he doesn't usually touch it. We have been spending lots of time with him and giving him aloe baths. He seems perfectly happy until we stick him in his cage. Every time we lock him in his cage he goes and lays upside down in his food bowl and starts chewing away! There are little pieces of feathers all over the place!! What do we do?!?!? My fiance has been back for almost a week now but it just seems to be getting worse!!! Arggg!!! Help!!!
18. I try not to eat right before I go to bed, but I do enjoy a sweet treat every now and then! What is the next day you are looking forward too?
19. I would delete it and send the person a PM. If it is real they could work with you to repost it in a more real manner. If not, how dare they get people's hopes up!!
