I have the black (actually grey). http://cgi.ebay.com/Bird-Parrot-cage-Conure-Lovebird-Cockatiel-Amazon-A11_W0QQitemZ140130827210QQihZ004QQcategoryZ46289QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The guy that cleans the carpet at work told me to just clip one of Gina's wings to keep her from flying. Apparently, he used to do that with his cockatiels. I promptly corrected him. Idiot
-
Gina is a female and she likes me more than she does my girlfriend.
-
Having just one side clipped is dangerous. Both sides need to be clipped identical. This is so they can glide down from a height instead of spiraling out of control.

I finally got Gina on my kitchen scale and she weighed in at ~475g. I can tell she's gained weight since she came to our home, I think I spoil her:) She's a 16 month old CAG.

Post edited by: Number6, at: 2007/06/14 15:54

That looks good, once he gets big enough, he'll start killing those balls. Gina seems to be able to recycle 1 every day and a half. Old keys make good toys too.

OOH... *runs to get phone book from work I'm going to get some chain and drill holes in the sides of Coke lids and hang them in the cage bunched together, Gina will keep herself occupied ripping the liners out of them.

Good news!!! I've been in touch with Gina's previous owners, and they want to work with me to get the other bird. They want $500us for cage and all. Her name is Goretti (not too wild about the name), and she is a Mexican red head, a.k.a. Green cheek amazon. Since I don't currently have that much cash on hand, they said they would let me take her for $250us and pay the other $250us sometime in the next couple of months. I offered to have family portraits taken of them for partial payment on Goretti, and they agreed. My brother is a professional photographer, and he owes me one. So... probably $100us in pics (like $30us out of pocket), and 2 payments of $200us, and I'll have Gina's buddy. They have been together since hatched, and this is the first time they've been apart. I also found out that their priest is the one that told them to get rid of the birds. The priest said that all things exotic and luxurious are bad for their souls. I put us next to all $ values, because I have NO idea what everyone's used to seeing.

Wiffle ball (smaller than a baseball w/ holes in it) What I made
-
I was thinking that we could compile a list of economical and fun toys for our children and good places to get materials to make them. For example, Gina loves to destroy wiffleballs. I got a stainless steel choke chain and 8 wiffleballs for $3 at Wal-mart. Threaded the chain through the balls by making small cuts in the balls, and hung it in the cage. Simple, but it works

Strawberries are good, but they are known for pesticides. Make sure they are cleaned well. As for watermelon, I'd think it's OK. I haven't seen it on any bad lists, and I actually have one I have to cut up adn vacuum seal when I get home.

I use newspaper too, at work, there is a 3 foot tall stack of old papers, so I just grab one every once in a while. I also keep some on the floor under her cage door to protect the carpet when she's standing on it. The open door is one of her favorite places to stand and eat or destroy wiffle balls.

Post edited by: Number6, at: 2007/06/10 21:34

I've been getting Gina more and more wet with the mister, but she still doesn't like it. I guess persistance is the key. I would've got a 'bird specific' mister but I just got one at Wally-world for a lot less. It sprays a gentle mist continuously, you just gotta pump it occasionally. We're still playing the chase game. She doesn't seem to mind much while she's on my shoulder and I'm getting wet too. This is the one I have, just a different sticker on the front.

Caspersmum wrote: I could understand some sort of price, because cages, toys, etc. are expensive. But there are limits to things. I picked up Gina and here cage for $500, which is fair. I saw the exact same cage at the pet store on the way home for $299. But some people take it too far. "I can't care for the bird, gimme $900 plus what I paid for the cage." That should never be done. If you can't care for the animal, first off, why did you get it, second, let someone who can care for it take it home. You buy and sell houses for profit, not living beings.

Post edited by: Number6, at: 2007/06/08 23:52

I don't know exactly how the previous owners handled bathing Gina, but it seems that she doesn't care for water at all unless she's drinking it. I bought a "Misty Mate" type mister that sprays a fine mist and she tries to run from it. She won't take a bath either. How exactly do I get her to bathe? Do I just keep pushing the issue? Thanks

Caspersmum wrote: I don't think she was really mistreated, but rather they felt that she needed a little more attention. I don't think they did much research on the species, rather, they listened to what the people at the pet store had to say. I'm not saying that ALL pet store employees are clueless, but not all know what they are talking about. For example: I repair my own vehicles and my friend's vehicles, but if I go to the parts store and have a code check ran on the car, the employees always want to sell me parts. Most of the time they are wrong, and just trying to make a sale, unless you happen to get a very knowledgeable person. [rant] And yes, extreme adoption fees are ludacris. There are people out there that get something, and once the novelty wears off, they try to make money, or they prey on caring people (puppy farms anyone??).[/rant]

Post edited by: Number6, at: 2007/06/08 23:17

That was Gina's buddy at her previous home. When I get some more $$ and permission from the significant other, I may try to get him or her too. The lady wanted $500 for each, and I picked Gina because of her demeanor.
