  1. Great Job Talon (what happened anyways??) My take on the Alex issue (w/o knowing Dr Pepperberg, their staff etc personally) is that they provided and continue to provide for their subjects (the birds) very well. Everything I saw indicated that these birds lead an enriched life with a lot of attention and love. I noted on a pic posted on the site below that Alex appeared to have some red factor. Anyone know if that is true? Also, listen to the NPR audio, its a good story. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=14293868&sc=emaf) Oh, and I got your back on the Karma Judy!! <br><br>Post edited by: dblhelix, at: 2007/09/14 02:41

  3. I say good riddance, I hate fleas!!...though they seem to like me! Well, I hope Chaco has it good now, wherever he's at...I suppose all beings deserve as much, maybe.
  4. Welcome, Welcome, Welcome!! Glad to have you here. We look forward to your participation. We have a great membership base with lots of knowledgeable people willing to share/learn from each other!
  5. Ouch! Sorry to hear about this. Sounds like you will recover w/o too much residual trouble. It is sooo tempting, but it is not recommended to sleep with your birds...even more than them hurting you, there are many sad stories of people falling asleep, rolling over onto their birds and killing them unintentionally...we are so much bigger than them... Be careful in any event and get better soon.<br><br>Post edited by: dblhelix, at: 2007/09/11 05:15
  6. It is normal for breeders to require a down payment to hold the bird(s) for prospective owners. Most will then require payment in full when the bird is either picked up or just before shipment etc. If the breeder you are working with will let you pay in installments that sounds nice...I think what you describing sounds normal. It is a good sanity check though, as they are pricey!
  7. Congrats to CD and all who participated for that matter! The contests are fun!!
  8. Here is mine...taken at dusk with flash. <br><br>Post edited by: dblhelix, at: 2007/09/10 05:01
  9. Well, we have not given her any pasta...yet. But her yellow color sort of reminded us of yummy macaroni! Plus macaroni's are small, and good...kind of like her! <br><br>Post edited by: dblhelix, at: 2007/09/10 03:44
  10. Picked this up for Kip at a local pet shop for $25. You could buy the wood etc and make yourself for cheaper too. I put the food bowl on there and may add another... Stand Kip on stand
  11. We got her a new bigger cage and some toys. We are having a hard time picking a name, but are considering "Macaroni"!
  12. And here is Kip today at 14 months... <br><br>Post edited by: dblhelix, at: 2007/09/09 20:13

  14. The cage has demonstrated to be well made, for many years. Alex was in fact a laboratory animal (in addition to a pet, a friend and a teacher), his cage was subjected to weekly pressure washings and other maintenance that many regular owners do not conduct and withstood these rigourous actions. The cage is fairly well made, the powder coat is very resistant, the food doors and locking mechanisms are top notch. The sliding paper trays etc are also well made. It is on the upper price range, but some of the "bargain" cages I looked at clearly did not have some of these amenities and if they did, they did not work nearly as well. I only threw this out there as an option, everyone is free to make their own decisions. I am very happy with my purchase and as indicated researched/reviewed many different cages from many different manufacturers.
  15. Mine came back with a Grey...yaay! Though I must say I like many other species as well!!
  16. Check out AvianAdventures.com as well to review their cages. They are pretty nice. I have one and that is what Dr. Pepperberg's Alex was kept in...I bought from these guys and was very happy with price/service: http://www.bird-cage.com/avian-adventures-mediana-playtop.htm
  17. There is info about cage size posted in the FAQ page on this forum that may help as well... B)

    ALEX MEMORIAL

This is tragic news. I feel for Irene, everyone that worked with Alex and everyone that Alex touched through his amazing and beautiful life. It does seem that his time was relatively short. I would be very interested to understand what the cause of death will be determined to have been. All my best thoughts and wishes to Irene Pepperberg, everyone at the Alex Foundation and anyone that Alex touched through his intelligent and compelling time with us. Mark
  19. Very well put by Mr. Spock I agree 100%. Birds are meant to fly. Shame on us if we take away that amazing gift.
  20. Hi all...well, we posted signs w/in about a mile radius of our house, phone poles, street lights etc. No one has contacted us...so it really does look like we have a new family member. She seems to be doing fine, adjusting to the cage she's in etc. She is still quite skittish and most definitely afraid of hands. Whoever had her must not have handled her much if at all. However, I continue to work with her and she is getting more comfortable with her surroundings in general. We have just had her over a week now so no doubt it is understandable that she will not be comfortable with the stability of her new home yet. She is still in quarantine of course and will be for another 35 days or so....poor little girl. She will be happier when we can at least have her cage out in the family room etc where the action and Kip usually are!!
