  1. Dave and Janet are right, you cannot tell the sex of an african grey by sight and another thing your pictures are way too big to even see correctly, see if you can resize them for us and do go introduce yourself and your grey in the welcome room.
  2. You can give him some veggies in the mornings and evenings but greys do not eat in "meals" like we do, they eat or snack all day long and some may munch during the night, be sure to have some pellets and a good seed mix in a bowl or separate bowls for anytime snacking. When you offer vegetables try them different ways, raw, cooked, mashed, chopped, shredded and what ever other ways you can do them for some will like some certain ways and not others, do this for a while and you will find out what his favorites are.

    Chewing?!

If your grey is a mature bird then yes it could be sexual frustration, do not pet him down the back, under the wings or anywhere around the tail area but do not make a big fuss about the chewing, just ignore it for his sake.
  4. Timbersmom is right, greys are not supposed to have a lot of fruit and not even every day so offer veggies as they are better for them.
  5. I also regard Harrison's pellets as a good nutritional supplement to the grey's diet and Josey eats some of hers every day, I keep a bowl with some in it at all times as she will snack on them from time to time.
  6. I make my iced tea with distilled water as our well water has a lot of limestone in it, it makes good tea but it gets cloudy quickly and develops an off taste, the distilled iced tea will keep in the fridge from one day to the next so I always have cold tea. My birds drink well water and it is fine except for the limestone and I like to put ice cubes in when I get them a fresh bowl.
  7. You can't tell me that dog doesn't know that child is special, what a beautiful thing, thanks Dave for sharing it.
  8. Well the floodgates will be open soon and you will hear lots of new sounds and words then sentences, oh happy day.
  9. I love to hear them jibber jabber and while I was listening to the videos so was Josey, she recognized another grey vocalizing, they do repeat a new sound over and over but soon move on to new ones, thanks for sharing them with us.
  10. Hello Pastoro and welcome to our family. I must agree with the others on the gloves, cage and age. A grey needs a cage wide enough for them to flap their wings and not touch the sides and that cage in your picture is much too slender. One thing I must stress is not to rush Shadow, let him decide when he is ready to interact with you, he and your IRN may never be friends but hopefully they will learn to tolerate one another, that is what my 3 birds do.
  11. Hello Steve and welcome to our family. Congrats on your new grey friend Woodstock and to clarify things, no it is not a good idea to have his former owner visit him as it gives him mixed signals, its best he begins a new slate with the past remaining the past. In my opinion it was something about your ex that triggered an unpleasant memory and it could have been most anything like the perfume she may have been wearing or something else seemingly minor but it started something that will have to be worked thru and that takes time, lots of time. But you are right about one thing, starting over like it was the first day Woodstock arrived is correct, sometimes to move forward we have to take a step back but progress is made eventually.
  12. This is always good news when the biting becomes less and less, it means you are doing something right, way to go.
  13. Since you just brought him home he might be wanting a handfeed, some just weaned greys will regress a little after they come to their new home and need it again, try fixing a little oatmeal and give it to him by spoon and see if that helps.
  14. What a stinker Storm is, Josey has never figured out how to open any of her doors, guess I have been lucky.
  15. Jay is right, Pearl is perfectly fine sleeping on the floor of her cage, she may pick a perch later on as they are all individuals and holding one foot up is how they rest that foot, all greys do it.
  16. Its a positive experience for him and so he loves it, he will have to do it in short sessions until he gains the strength needed.
  17. Sometimes the ends of where the wings were clipped can be irritating so maybe that is what is happening, don't focus on that or it could become something, if you have some aloe vera juice use that to bathe her in and frequently. This is exactly what my grey did for a long time, she was clipped before I brought her home and though I never clipped her again she overpreened one side that I guess was irritating her and she has just now left it alone enough for a full set of feathers to come back in. I hope you will allow Pearl's flight feathers to come back in and leave her unclipped, they are much more confident when they are allowed to fly as they should.
  18. Yes she seems to be settling in nicely, she looks great and have a wonderful time with her.
  19. Enjoyable to watch and love the song, fits him to a T.
  20. Its funny how sometimes things work out for the best, you really wanted Pearl to come to her new home this weekend and so it begins, can't wait to see some pictures and how it goes, congrats and good luck.
  21. Happy Birthday to you, hope it is the best one yet.

  22. I have a couple of those cement perches in Josey's cage and both are the irregular shape as those exercise the feet better than the perfectly round type, they help to keep her talons from being so sharp. Congrats on Alfie getting the clean bill of health.
  23. Dan is right, bathing him with aloe vera juice will be soothing to him as those pins can be irritating but thats great he is no longer plucking.
  24. Thanks Val for the heads up, seems these sorts of things are happening more often.
  25. Your bird should have a good seed mix and/or pellets in their cage at all times for birds will eat throughout the day and not in meals like we do, that way when he gets hungry and wants a snack it is available.
