  1. It has only been a month and that is a very short time in grey terms so give yourself some credit for accomplishing what you have already, you are doing fine and it will get better as time goes by, lets see how much different it will be in 6 months time or a year from now, keep up the good work.
  2. That story just shows how emphatic our birds can be, so intuned to our emotions, thanks for sharing it with us. I have a tiel that just dropped in one day, I never would have chose one to share my house with but since this one was outside and surely would have ended up as hawk dinner I took it in and gave it a home after exhausting all hope of finding it's owner. It didn't like me at first and wanted nothing to do with my hands but I fed her and got her a bigger cage and she has come around to being a wonderful companion. She will seek me out to be near me or on me and lets me handle her giving her scratches, she has become a great bird to have around and very quiet, you hardly know she is around and never bites.
  3. Not necessarily for sometimes a happy bird is a loud one, give them a heavy duty bell and hear how happy they can be.
  4. Your bird is still a very young bird and of course he wants to be with you but as he matures he will be less needy, he will become more independent and be willing to spend more time just hanging out on a playstand or chilling out near you. If you don't want him landing on you when he takes flights then put your arm up to divert him away to land elsewhere. I would keep him flighted for he will be a more confident grey.
  5. Either answer is ok as I leave the grate in Josey's cage as she will occasionally go to the bottom and scratch around and you don't want them getting into their feces and spoiled food but if your bird never goes to the bottom to play or forage then you can leave it out, it is one more thing to clean if you do use it.
  6. Roxie is sure one baby doll of a grey, what a sweetheart with a Santa cap on, I know someone is hoping January flies by so the first week of February will be here, I like the name too, it fits. Thanks for sharing it with us.
  7. Ah that first flight is a sure sign she will be coming home soon, it won't be long now until we hear a lot more about Elly May and maybe more pictures, you must be very proud.
  8. Hello Sacr69 and welcome to our family, so glad you could join us. I find that the more I find out the more I need to know, its good you have already browsed thru the many threads here and it is firsthand experience but if you have any questions please feel free to ask and we will help you in any way we can. Would love to see some pictures of Spartan.
  9. Hello Rubys-Mum and welcome to our family, so glad you are looking into getting yourself a grey. If you are looking for tips then by all means read thru as many of the threads here as it will give you an idea of what you are getting into and be sure it is the right bird for you, do research to know if it is a good fit as too many people have jumped in and bought one before finding out what they need and then down the road they are looking to rehome it. Ask questions if you have any and we will help you in any way we can.
  10. I have not noticed any difference in Josey's behavior even at the 2 year old mark, I imagine it is as all other behaviors in that it has a lot to do with each individual bird and their personality.
  11. Thats wonderful and could you maybe get a couple of pics while there to share with us, hint, hint.
  12. I have noticed your absense but sometimes life gets in the way but we do the best we can, glad to see you are still around and doing ok. Sorry to hear the holidays were stressful for Kito but hope all resolves itself soon and those new toys help to relieve boredom and keep her busy for a while, nice of her to send you a couple of chocolates as most of us women are addicted to it. We haven't had much of a winter here either but it is cold at the moment, still waiting for some snow but spring will be here soon.
  13. Most of the time the only bird I have in the kitchen when cooking is my sun conure as she is a constant companion and does not try to get into pots on the stove, my grey will sometimes join me in the kitchen but she stays on a playstand, my tiel I cannot have in the kitchen when cooking as she does fly around and could land in a pot so she stays out. My conure has never tried to get into pots but she did want in the sink one time when washing up some dishes, she is fond of hanging off my shirt when she wants to get to something so she was hanging over the water and she must have let go for she ended up in the dishwater but it wasn't that hot at the time and I quickly retrieved her and ever since she has avoided that situation.
  14. As the others have said the only way to be sure besides surgical sexing is thru the dna either in blood or feathers. I hope you do not encourage this behavior you are describing of the wings lowered and other sexual arousal actions because you will get your bird all worked up and he/she will be frustrated. You need to discourage this by distracting Sambo to other things and no touching anywhere lower than the neck and head. Stroking of the back, wings and underside especially around the tail will only excite Sambo.
  15. Hello Charles and welcome to our family and so glad to hear you got your parrot back. Poor thing being shuffled around like that but hope your parrot gets to stay and it lasts for the life of the bird as it is hard on them going from one owner to another. I am assuming your parrot is a grey. Why don't you tell us more about this bird, name, age and so forth and please consider sharing some pictures if you have some.
  16. As I have said before Sunny, my sun conure is the top bird, she is also the first parrot I brought into the house and she can have a feisty nature to her, she is not really scared of Josey although she is lots smaller than she is but she respects her space. Its a different story with Gypsy, my cockatiel who is more passive, Sunny will run her off my shoulder even though she is on the other one, she will sneak slowly over and one look from her and Gyspy will move off, she won't mess with Sunny but I am constantly reminding her that she should share but she wants me all to herself. I manage to provide enough time for each one to have some time alone with me. They are usually all out at the same time but Josey spends most of her time on top of her cage or playstand, Sunny is usually on me and Gypsy kind of spends some on the back of the couch or around different places and she takes a few flights for good measure.
  17. What a sweet looking baby grey, don't you just adore those black eyes of the babies, Elle May is a sweetheart.
  18. You will have more luck searching the internet for places close to you with greys for sale or breeders in your area, you will be better off with a handfed baby grey. Have you had a grey before and have you researched to find out if a grey is a suitable bird for you?
  19. These are very nice pictures Sanggay and I love how you insert a little bit of color in some of them, makes them much more striking to bring out some red in the tail, thanks for sharing them with us.
  20. It certainly does look like he ate that piece of paper he rolled around in his beak, I have seen Josey do that but she eventually drops it and doesn't swallow it. Do you have an avian vet you can ask about this problem as he will know more than we do what may be going on with Zak.
  21. They have changed my life too in so many ways and like many of your reasons too. I used to hate to see bird poop on my vehicle but now its cat prints I hate more. Now when I plan a vacation or a few days away the first thing I think about is what about the fids, where do they go, who takes care of them and so forth, if I am not going to be home early or have to stay away all day or all night the first thing I think about is them.
  22. That was adorable watching those little tiels growing up, thanks for sharing it with us.
  23. Poor little Oboe, he has been thru a lot with this incident with Duncan but lets hope that is all behind him now and he is on the road to mending his injuries, hopefully this will put an end to his taunting of the cat but time will tell. I hope Oboe will be back to grooming Simon in no time, keep us informed.
