  1. I use the food processor whenever I'm making large batches of veggies. Then I freeze them in ice cube trays for later use. The veggies I do this with are the ones that require a little cooking: carrots, beets, corn, etc. Otherwise I hand chop their fresh daily entrees.
  2. Thank you for your reply. The breeder told me he was almost weaned, and that he was down to one feeding a day. He sent me home with a bag of formula mix to give him whenever he needed or wanted it. However, it became clear to me that he actually needed, and wanted, two feeds per day. We'd had the discussion of abundance feeding before I got him, but clearly he wasn't adhering to this particular philosophy for his weaning clutches. I've been giving him 40cc's per feed, so I guess that I'm not giving him enough then. I'll bump it up today. He's doing great eating a variety of fresh veggies, fruits, pellets, and seeds, although I'm trying to wean him off those dyed Zupreem fruity pellets he came home on and onto the Harrison's. So far he's still noshing on the Zupreem ones. I'm also trying to get him off the large bill seeds, as I've been told they're not good for him over time. I'm offering him nuts as treats, and have placed a few inside his foraging toy.
  3. My baby still wants formula twice a day. He's 13 weeks now. Should I be reducing it to once a day if he still eagerly gobbles it up?
  4. My baby made his first flight today. He's now 12 weeks old. I was at work, but my husband said he circled the room, and then made a hard landing against the cabinet. No warm ups; just flying out of the starting gate. Wow!
  5. Glad you mentioned the tape, Timbersmom, because I hadn't thought to remove it. His breeder just called to check in on how things are going so far. I mentioned the scratching thing, and he said that they do it to try to get out; that it's not a foraging thing. But don't they do that in the wild to forage for food on the ground? Perhaps they do it for both reasons.
  6. Today I was going through a series of repetitions using a toy, saying the same word sequences each time: take it; shake it; drop it; uh oh!; and take it. After the fifth time, my 11 week baby said 'uh oh' right when I would have said it during the sequence, and continued to say it each and every time thereafter. I can't believe it so soon!
  7. Did you put anything inside it, such as paper, or just let him scratch away at the cardboard?
  8. Do any of you provide an area set up in the bottom of your greys' cages to help them satisfy their scratching needs? I have a grate at the bottom of my baby's cage, but feel that he needs something to scratch into instead of the bars. I don't want to remove the grate and have him scratching in the area where his food and poops fall. Any ideas?
  9. KimKim, I'm SO sorry, I over-took your thread. I'll move my inquiries to another thread.
  10. Thanks for this important information! I have several java tree table top stands in our aviary (my dining room. LOL!). He can also land on top of the other birds' 4 cages. Hopefully my birds, especially my Zon, will leave his toes alone! When I pick him up today, the breeder will be sending some formula with me, just in case he ends up asking for it. He felt comfortable releasing him to me 90% weaned knowing that I'm not a first time bird owner.
  11. No, he's not clipped. The breeder is the senior bird keeper from our local zoo, and does all sorts of fun stuff with his flock, including falconry. We talked at great length about allowing greys to remain flighted to help with their confidence development. He's not fledged yet, so I'm wondering how I should go about it. I don't want to see him fly into walls if I can help him avoid it.
  12. Will I have to teach my new baby Grey how to fly with controlled landings so he won't end up flying into walls as well? I'm picking him up tomorrow and is 11 weeks old.
  13. I'm about to become the parront of a new baby CAG! Tomorrow I'll be bringing him home to join our flock of 4 fids. Needless to say, I'm extremely excited that tomorrow's going to be the day! Although I've always been surrounded by a lot of different types of animals over the years, birds were never part of the mix. Then, last year, when I was volunteering with my daughter at a local pet shop, this cute little dusky conure caught our eye and eventually wiggled herself into our hearts and our home. A month later we brought home our second dusky. This spring we fell in love with the most adorable little pineapple GCC and he became the third feathered member of our household. Once I became thoroughly familiar with how to care for my fid family, I felt that I was ready for a larger, more intelligent parrot. That's when Harley, our Panama Amazon, joined our flock. My husband and I have always wanted an African Grey. However, we wanted to make certain that we would be able to exceed the needs of such a highly intelligent animal. We spent several months doing our research, and now we're ready to go! I'm thrilled to have found this forum of 'everything Grey', and look forward to chatting with you!
