Possibly Not Fully Weaned?

Recommended Posts

My new baby grey came home 2 days ago and the breeder said she is fully weaned eating pellets, fruits veggies etc.. I leave at about 7:40am and come home at around 2pm everyday except weekends. I gave her food this morning (Some peas with a little bit of seeds and pellets), when I came home she had not touch anything so I made her a bit of oats with some carrot baby food and she chowed it down very fast from the spoon.

I don't think she is fully weaned, what do you think? She is 12 weeks old.

Thank you

Michaela

When I got Alfie he was 11 weeks old. I was still hand feeding him with a spoon as well as offering him seeds, veggies etc etc. So I finished the weaning process that the breeder/pet store had started. I can't remember if I had to feed him once or twice a day when I first got him though... it was 12 years ago! Sorry!

It might be that you are in the same position.

She might have been fully weaned at the breeders but regressing a little bit in her new surroundings because she is a little unsure of herself. I never had a baby myself, but I've seen others here recommend that you continue to offer baby food until she is refusing it.

I have tried giving her pellets, fruit etc... But she refuses and spits it all out, but when she sees her warm oatmeal she eats all of it up but not from the bowl, she will only eat it from a spoon. I know when she is hungry as she tries to bite everything she sees until she gets warm soft food.

Do you think I should just keep feeding until she does not want anymore? Should I carry on with the oatmeal and purity baby food?

My spoiled rotten Grey will take feedings and she's 2.5 years old.

I would carry on with the feedings until your Grey chooses to begin eating other things. At that age they will eventually get curious about other treats and eats. You don't want them starving even if they are choosing to.

We use a gram scale to monitor weight. I have a Jardines who we're having trouble keeping weight on so I actually switch back to his baby food when he starts remaining well below the weight he was delivered to us at. He's 15 months.

Echo regressed a bit after I had her at home for a week. And I brought her home at 16 weeks or so ... she was fully fledged and able to fly when I brought her home.

I did the oatmeal on a spoon for a couple of weeks - still left her food for her, and she "weaned" herself off after a while (I don't remember how long, it's been a while!)

Mine was not fully weaned until almost 5 months. I would offer her warm food morning and night while making sure she has her fresh foods and a few pellets/seeds available at all time. Also, don't leave fresh foods in the bowls longer than 3-4 hours. I would stop the morning feeding, or cut it down, when you notice her eating some of the fresh foods. Stay on the evening warm food until she wants it to stop.

There isn't complete nutrition in plain oatmeal. Can you get hold of some weaning formula while you continue to offer her the oatmeal/baby food/real food?

I'd offer he 2-3 feedings per day, depending upon how independent a feeder she is. I'd also advise you to get a scale and weigh her daily

There are some great articles on the internet regarding abundance feeding that I would like to encourage you to read.

I will go and get some as soon as I can. Thank you for the advice:-) She seems very hungry every morning, afternoon and evening and just wants more and more soft food all the time. I will do some reading on feeding etc... I'm so glad I joined this forum!!
