  1. 1- Our Greycie does the exact same. Sleepy in the afternoons, very active mornings and late afternoon/evening. 2 & 3 - Keep offering a variety of foods. I've noticed with ours, it looks like they waste a lot but somehow she's still gaining weight. She goes after the sunflower seeds first so we only give those as treats or sparingly with her normal food. I use a mash to get her to eat stuff she won't eat normally. Fortunately for me, mine is young so she still wants warm comfort food and I can get stuff in her that won't normally go down in its native form.
  2. We have the ceiling fans that have blades that look like airplane propeller blades. They are designed to move slowly but have a very high CFM. Greycie stays away from them when on just because it's not a stable surface but due to their slow movement they are no danger to her when on. She has flown up there and landed once but got tired of the merry-go-round so she decided to look elsewhere. A couple of rooms have the normal ceiling fans, I don't think I'd risk running those.
  3. Mountain cedar grows like weeds here in Texas. I've been thinking about finding a long dead tree somewhere back in the sticks, off the beaten path (to avoid any kind of spraying that may have occured), to cut up and make a stand out of. Does it have to be a dead tree? Would a live tree that needs to be removed be ok? We have some on our property that need to be thinned and we've never sprayed a thing here so I know they're good if it's ok to use a live one. Thx!
  4. Greycie has made quick work of my mostly plastic cheap Ironman watch. Guess I'll have to go with an all metal watch with buttons that are impossible for a beak to get out. Any ideas? It's not like I can 'just keep her away from it'. She waits till I slip up and then gets a good hold. She usually gets away with a piece before I can pry her beak off.
  5. I will tell you I opted NOT to go with a breeder who was right in my back door because she offered to let me take the Grey earlier at a discount. The one I finally went with had to convince me she understood the concept of abundance weaning, allowed the birds to learn to fly, and of course I found out this lady travels to conferences and such. She's by far the most expensive breeder I came across but my philosophy was - Grey's are easy to screw up, I wanted it done right from the beginning. Very professional. Plus we were able to go see her operation. There is another one in Austin that won't allow you to see their 'facility' - steer clear.
  6. I would say yes. Our Jardine is quite timid but is able to hold her own with Greycie mainly due to the size of the Jardine's beak. Her beak is something to be feared! For such a small bird, they have a ferocious beak. Greycie has been trying relentlessly to make friends with Raven but Raven is apparently not too interested. Greycie will follow Raven around doing the baby grunting. Occasionally they get into a brawl and Greycie will get Raven on her back but we're not sure if it's playing or fighting because Raven will do the same thing on her own and it sounds like she's fighting. Jardine's are very cute birds and I'd say are really almost the perfect bird. They are not loud too much but when they are it's pretty cute. They are snugglers by nature if you get one that's been raised properly. And when they play it's similar to the way a Caique plays if you're familiar with those. Maybe you need one! http://avalonaviary.com/jardines-parrots.aspx
  7. This has nothing to do with our bratty spoiled little 5mo old Grey but with a rescued Jardine's parrot we got out of a filthy critter rescue. Her name is Raven. She's young but has lived a rough life till we found her. She's what I consider my heart bird. She's not very friendly but has good reason not to be. Her favorite person is my wife. My wife gets special treatment by Raven most notably a "wurrr wurrr" whenever my wife picks her up. It's very sweet. All I ever get is mostly growls. Jardine's are known to have a 'sweet growl' which I sometimes will get. Anyway, last night we were doing the potty thing (they're both partially potty trained to go on a tray) with Raven and she got a dried banana slice reward - one of her favorites. My wife handed Raven off to me to handle the crumblies while she went to the kitchen. Raven suddenly started giving me the soft sweet growl and hooking her bill over my thumb and pulling. I called my wife to ask if she knew what Raven was doing - not a clue. So I lowered my face to talk to her and she reached for my lips and put the nana chip right in my lips. We were both floored. I took a nibble of the chip and handed it back to Raven. While we were going on about what we just witnessed, Raven starts it again and I lower my head and she passes off the chip again - unbelievable. This happened yet a third time before the chip was pretty much used up. Each time Raven would take a little and then hand it off to me. She was literally communicating with me to take a bite of her chip. The sweet little girl was sharing her treat. So we're committed to having the camcorder ready so the next time this happens we can get it on video. It was super sweet.
  8. I read this and immediately went home and punished my cat. It didn't work - haahaaa. I see someone has never had the pleasure of being domesticated by a cat. ;P
  9. The pic of the lil GCCs is cute. We have an ornery GCC named Stuart (Stewie). To think he once looked so cute and innocent - I hardly believe it
  10. SOL - Shit Out of Luck. An acronym that's been in use well before the meme generation came along with their 'LOL's and other B.S. SOL - like the poor little Green Cheek Conure we rescued from a family with a kid that no longer wanted a bird. He's lucky we came along. best-parrots-for-families-with-children/
  11. here's one reason why: http://avianambassadors.com/BirdTraining/bird-tricks-to-avoid/ It didn't take me long to figure out they are pretty much ripoffs who plagiarizer other people's work.
  12. Any chance you can wait and get the baby issue settled first - I'm talking months/years down the road? If one has to go, of course the baby wins out and the parrot is SOL.
  13. Interesting...we have a 'Stewie' too. Stuart, our Green Cheek Conure. And Greycie is out CAG.
  14. Specifically looking for - Tropican Hi Performance Sticks - Harrison's Hi Potency Course Grind - Tropmix This is straight off the breeders paperwork that came with Greycie. Supposedly it's what she'll eat and waste 90% tossing it off the side of the boat. I'm toying with the idea of just flushing some money down the toilet instead .
  15. There are three complaints in this thread over a period of several years. I'd steer very clear of these clowns.
  16. Hmmmm....Greycie-pot-pie has a nice ring to it.
  17. Real name: Greycie Flying around the house doing the pterodactyl scream: yelled to anyone else in her strafing zone "watch out for 'Flying rat with her panties on fire'. It took a while for my daughter to figure out what I meant by 'panties on fire' i.e. red tail. Pet names: Greycie-poo. Everyone in our house gets a name with -poo on the end for some reason. I'm Daddy-poo. I think my daughter started this. Greycie-may. I have no idea why I call her this sometimes. When she's in trouble by my wife: Greycie Sterling. When my daughter is in trouble she gets the Sterling appendix as well. Anyone who is in trouble gets associated with me by my last name of Sterling by default. I guess I am chief trouble-maker. And my personal favorite: Bat or Bat-bird. She loves to hang upside down. I'm always telling anyone who will listen - "I paid good money for an African Grey and all I got was a Bat - I got jipped".
  18. I rescued a pigeon once, nearly same circumstance. Found it had been floating downstream and was standing on a little island waiting to be devoured by whatever found it next. I reared him into a fully fledged pigeon and named him 'Mr. Pigoey'. He was a sweet sweet bird. What I remember most about him was that he liked to tail me on my ride to work. I lived about 3 miles from where I worked and regularly rode my motorcycle. I'd get him up to 40-50mph and he'd finally bank and turn and go to who-knows-where. There was evidence that he returned to his roost box that I built for his outdoor living - we kept him as an indoor bird. Returning home from work, some days I could count on seeing him either sitting on a telephone wire and swooping down behind me or he'd appear from nowhere. I had him for several years. They are neat birds.
  19. 140 mile round trip!!! Wish we had a place like that over here. We're going to the bird show in Richardson this Saturday. Although a lady we bought a cage from that lives near us said the bird shows aren't what they used to be. She no longer goes to them.
  20. HAAAHAA...I like your attitude. "Love fades but a Grey lasts a lifetime" - needs to be made into a shirt, or a bumper sticker, or something.
  21. Reminds me of a cribbing horse. Sure she's not sucking air?
  22. She's not a doctor, nor did she stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but Greycie highly recommends a stay at the Marble Falls LaQuinta Inns and Suites.
