  1. Amali

    Palm nuts

I have ordered them from Kathie at My Safe Bird Store before. Amali was young at the time and really didn't take much interest in them. We will be trying them again when they come into season.
  2. Amali

    Pak O Bird

Does anyone use one? Like it? I broke down and ordered one today so I could start taking Amali on walks without her feeling insecure out in the open in just a harness. I'm excited for it to come in and see how she likes it!
  3. Let it go and move on Anyone who comes back to say that they've found a new forum is only out to ruffle feathers. And Jayd, while I agree that the cage needed replaced - this poster clearly didn't really want advice from anyone here. Hopefully her new forum will be able to persuade her!
  4. Hahaha! Thanks, Dave! Now - just for a point of reference, is this all done before or after you are manicuring your wife's toenails? I need to make sure I know how to do this right, you know.
  5. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that Dave is like my husband ... lots of talk until the Mrs. is within earshot. :D
  6. Good job - way to be creative Amali seems to love toys I make for her so much more than store bought toys ... probably because she gets to "help" make them I would warn you about a couple different things I see. 1. Using the caribiner to hang toys - these have been known to get toes pinched and there is a chance for a bird getting stuck in them. I'd only use these for toys that you have available when you are there to supervise. 2. The split rings (key chain links) - again, same thing. I've read horror stories of birds getting caught in these. Make sure any of your metal pieces are either stainless steel or nickel plated - any metals with zinc are toxic. Unfortunately, zinc plated metals are also the most common to find so make sure you know what you're using. Lastly, make sure any leather strips you use are vegetable tanned leather - using leather laces like shoe laces from the store are NOT safe for birds as they are chemically tanned. Making toys at home is definitely cost effective. I order toy parts from mysafebirdstore.com rather frequently and use stuff around the house as well. Just always pay close attention to making sure the materials won't harm your baby.
  7. I'm all over the place when it comes to music - 80s, Top 40 (I have kids), Country - but my staple and most listened to is Contemporary Christian. David Crowder, Chris Tomlin, etc are on in my car most of the time. Amali digs it too
  8. We have a female short haired mini doxie. Best inside dog I've ever had. Congrats on your new addition!

    new Filbert

Happy to hear things are going well for you after the heartbreak you went through! I also look forward to following how things go with Filbert My new Galah, Tucker, is 60 days old now and we are anticipating bringing him home in 2-3 weeks. Hopefully Amali will be as accepting as Sam!
  10. As much as I would LOVE a house full of birds, a yard full of dogs, and a pasture full of horses and cows, my husband keeps me grounded in reality. LOL We are in the middle of my oldest daughter's wedding planning (wedding in August), I work full time, I am the church treasurer, and I have an 8 year old as well ... I can't say that I blame him when he says I have enough going on. HA! I will definitely keep you posted on bringing Tucker home and how he integrates in with the family. I can only imagine how Amali will take it ... she gets jealous of the dachshund sitting on my lap! But maybe, just maybe, she will surprise me and she will enjoy Tucker as much as the rest of us.
  11. Yes, it does - but we stop at 2 in our house! LOL Well ... unless I win the lottery and can build a bigger house
  12. A Galah it is Meet Tucker: He will be coming home sometime mid-June
  13. Yay, Dawn! Exciting! Are you going through Scott at Old World? And I'm hoping I can find time this weekend to get out and cut that mesquite that we talked about - I'll let you know as soon as I have it
  14. Well, I know that for Amali, it seems to work out better when I make her toys vs. buying her toys. She sits and watches me make them, she "helps" along the way - and then she isn't scared of the new toys at all when they go in her cage. On the other hand, she is more leery of toys she didn't take part or supervise the making of. The cost savings is pretty significant as well ... you can end up with so many more homemade toys for the same price as a couple store bought toys.
  15. I'm very excited to go meet the Galahs - I've done a bunch of reading and I think this may be one that will fit our family Know that Galah actually means "idiot or "fool" because of the pests these birds are in Australia has my 8 year old daughter referring to her soon to be brother in law as a "galah" in jest. Hehe! I really appreciate this community and the willingness to help with information. Sharing stories and experiences is exactly what it's all about ... what better way to learn and be able to 1) make more informed decisions and 2) enrich the lives of our fids.
  16. I had a very encouraging post from a lady on another board, and Jay, many of your comments mirror hers. Cockatoos can be more needy, but a lot of the issues you hear about with them seem to be people created. If you treat the bird like a human baby, it will not develop its sense of independence and is more likely to have behavioral issues. If you raise and train with firm rules and expectations, you can avoid screaming and plucking issues - or at least reduce chances of them. I am really excited to go see the two Galah males that the breeder has. Each are approximately 35-45 days from weaning. Once weaned, this breeder keeps them an additional 7-10 days to ensure no regression. I'm also told the Galah is a lot more social than many Too species which will thrill my daughters. Both interact with Amali, give her scritches and treats, but neither can handle Amali the same way I can. Amali picked me when I went to choose my bird from the breeder and she meant serious business. My hope is that my next bird will also choose us rather than the other way around.
  17. Amali is only 10 months old, but so far we have microwave beep, Xbox start up sound, dogs barking, and a couple different whistles. I love listening to her try to work out new sounds.
  18. I had a good conversation with a breeder in Austin today. He has several Galahs and he feels they may make a good choice for our family. I'm hoping I can find a day to go visit soon - like you said, I will know if it is the right one after I see it. This breeder also has lilac crowns though their eggs were infertile this last clutch.

    Filbert

Oh man I'm so sorry to hear this! I truly enjoyed seeing all your posts and pictures of Filbert.
  20. I've had varying responses to this question about the Citron on another forum as well. I fully understand how things can vary from bird to bird but it amazes me how people can make judgements on others when they are truly doing their research and trying to make an informed decision. I'm not saying that happened here by any means but it is definitely cause to acknowledge that sometimes the Internet is a diffucult place to communicate and one paragraph of text is easily read multiple ways. Because of this, we should all always be slow to judge and quick to listen - make sure you fully understand what someone's message is before being rude or argumentative. I am still doing my research and at this moment, have no idea what our second bird will be. We will figure it out when the time is right
  21. I appreciate all the input We are doing our research and won't rush a decision. So far I've only found one Mealy Amazon breeder - reading more about them has sparked an interest Also looking into Pionus like Jeff mentioned. Amali's breeder does also breed Cape parrots so will read further!
  22. Thanks for the input, Jay. I will look into a Mealy Amazon more - an initial search didn't bring up many breeders! A Pionus was also suggested to me. I will continue to search until I'm sure we've found the right bird for us ... no rush!
  23. Yes, they are, but at the same time it is pretty safe to say that most any big macaw is likely to drive my husband crazy. I'm just trying to find a match where everyone will be happy!
  24. I understand that, Ray! I think it is all about different kinds of noise too. Amali can make noise with the best of them - especially when she is trying to mimic the shriek of my 7 year old daughter! Ha! But the mimicking and household noises are much easier on the ears than an all out ear splitting shriek.
