  1. Ohh what an excellent idea. If Nilah is in a travel cage she can still join you for breakfast and you don't have to chase her around afterward. I would love to let Jake out in the mornings before I go to work but he is not a morning bird and prefers to sleep in.
  2. Not slippers but Jake hates cucumbers. It doesn't matter if they are whole, peeled, sliced he growls and freaks out. They must have a smell that he doesn't like because even hidden at the bottom of my salad bowl he will growl. I have to eat them in secret.
  3. Dave never did share with us what he had for dinner.
  4. It could also be that Paco does not like or is fearful of skin. You could try covering your arm by putting on a thick sweatshirt, bathrobe or even a towel.
  5. I like dogs and cats but what makes me a parrot person is the exchange. You have to earn the love and trust of a parrot and you have to keep earning it each and every day.
  6. My TAG goes after the cat. He has decided that he is #1 in this house. The poor cat can't get away fast enough. We maintain line of sight at all times and give the cat hidey holes but I don't trust either one of them.
  7. I would go for the second one and you don't have to drive to Pittsford. That is a hike.
  8. The first article says to spray with water. If you place a stock pot of boiling water in the oven and close the door it should stay steamy enough to keep things moist for hours.
  9. I love how Ms Gillybert (yes I made up a name there) used the dogs as her royal testers to make sure the new food item was not poison. Just the fact that she touched it is a huge deal, then to go down and get it is just awesome.
  10. Cameras make a noise and most have a light showing that they are recording. Try wrapping your camera in a towel, except for the lens and mic and then set it up on a table where you only need to reach over and hit the button. Webcams can be used for recording and are another option. Their operation is silent and is activated by your computer.
  11. Silly human, the write a book idea is because you could help others and give inspiration to those thinking of or walking the walk of rescuing a grey. The mini cone can be hung by a skewer, a leather lace or really anything. You can add some small foot toys, dry treats, anything at all. Two stacked on top of one another and hung can be a foraging treat toy. Make a hole and hang one over the handles of the measuring spoons. Wrap one in a piece of paper and tie with a bow. Those mini cones are so cool that if someone comes up with a cone maker I might just buy one. I don't do unitaskers so I heard a gasp when I mentioned to the family to keep an eye out for one.
  12. FYI a speckleware stockpot with the lid on makes a great perch in the kitchen (no not for parrot soup!) .
  13. You are not taking enough credit. YOU stood your ground and made a decision not to give up and not to give in to her own self prescribed pity party. YOU decided to love her and show her each and every day that you did. If it wasn't for your commitment to love her warts and all she would not have wanted to give it a chance. While she may have been the one to make the decision you are the one who gave her the tools and the encouragement to take those steps.
  14. Something else to try is a small child size ice cream cone. If you have some avicakes you can soften them in the microwave and smoosh them into the bottom of the cone around an almond.
  15. The bedtime fight isn't just with rescue/rehomed birds. We have a fight every night. Thankfully I have learned the trick but it took me months of offering treats, being nice and even being sneaky. Now I use a pillow to save my skin and bend it in a certain way so that he can't duck back out of the door. He grudgingly steps onto his door perch knowing that it is in the cage time. I wish there was a better, simpler way but he will sleep all night on the cage door if I give him the choice.
  16. The vet scanned Jakes chip to verify that it was in working condition and also checked the numbers on his leg band against what she had in the computer. I was glad she includes that as part of every visit.
  17. I know what you mean about that bite hurt. I went through this just recently with Jake and its hard not to shy away. He has been soooo much better but I am still a bit apprehensive in some situations. Throwing a towel around my neck and shoulders really helped. He couldn't get to me to bite and I was confident. With it cooling off some maybe you could wear one of those thick terry cloth spa robes (or a kevlar vest lol) . I know about that mocking thing too. I remember the day Jake stepped up on my arm, bent over and bit the underside of it. Then he straightened himself up, looked me right in the eye and said "your such a good boy". Thankfully for us both I do not have a quick temper.
  18. I found stainless shephards hooks about 24 inches high at the bird fair and attached them to the perch frames at the point where they screw into the cage. Each hook hangs away from the cage but it is close enough to climb into easily.
  19. Our adding machine tape sits sideways between 2 plastic cup lids that had holes in the center. I ran a toy chain through the center with a bell at the bottom and a link at the top. Because it doesn't roll out like a toilet paper roll he has to work at it a bit and it lets me roll it back up. I could hang it like a tp roll but he likes it this way.

    best seed mix?

It is now a stock item at my Petco. I am hoping that the citrus scent/flavor that Jake likes in the seed mix will get him try try some of the Hagen Tropican pellets I ordered.
  21. Well try Lulu for a while and see what happens. It is possible that Gilbert was the former owner but it is just as possible that your feather baby has always been a Gilbert.

    best seed mix?

Jake was eating Higgins Safflower Gold but the last time I went to buy a bag they only had 1 left and it had been opened. I picked up a bag of Sunscription Vita-Prima Large Hookbill Safflower Formula and he just loves it. I tried going back to the Higgins once the new shipment came in and he won't touch it. Its a good thing that my Grandbirdie will eat anything. I give everything Jake refuses to her. My son hasn't bought food in a year. Edited to add the link to the type of food that Jake likes. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=18015
  23. There organic salt free or almost salt free beans. Of course my guy doesn't like them one bit. There are also bags of salt free or almost salt free beans and vegetables in the frozen food section. Those he really likes, they are super easy and mix into other foods well. If you go the frozen route be sure to check the ingredient list for onions and pick them out.
  24. I am so glad to hear that Gilbert is in a good place and is comfortable enough to show his displeasure by actually directing it at those he is displeased with. I am thrilled to hear that Gilbert loves his measuring spoons. Jake has a set hanging on a pear link and he too loves to do fierce battle with them. You will hear some pretty awful squawks, including some that indicate pain, but try and let him work it out unless he gets hung up some how. He will figure out how not to pinch his toes between the spoon handles by trial and error and he will learn there are consequences if he forgets.
  25. There are large birdie bagel tubes but you could probably make your own far cheaper with newspaper, and a paper mache glue made of equal parts of flour and water. Just imagine the birdie creations you can make with embedded nuts wrapped in parchment paper and covered in paper mache.
