Been thinking about getting a CAG for months and have read almost every shred of info I could find on them and parrots in general. Needless to say my wife also struck interest in owning something similar herself so decided I should get her a pair of sun conures she found advertised on a local classified add. Really the deal was great, two 6 month old hand raised birds with a large cage, toys, bowels and all for $320. Now I've only had the birds home for 24 hours but i have a couple questions I'm hoping some more seasoned bird owners could answer.
I'm not sure about the sex of the birds and i know there is no way to tell just by looking. But they live together in the same cage. Could this cause a problem when they reach sexual maturity? I don't want to mate them even if they could but is it ok to continue to keep them in the same cage. They seem to get along great, they share food and prune each other all the time.
Also, I know its only been a day. But the people we got them from said they could pick them up and that they didn't bite. Now this morning neither one of them (we named them kiwi and mango lol) would have anything to do with us. I fully expected this though. But kiwi started coming around after a few hours of coaxing and will now take a peanut out of my hand, give me kisses and nibble on my fingers. Mango started coming around a little later in the day with kisses first then he started taking food from our hands. Neither bird will let us touch them though. Anything more then gnawing on our fingers is off limits. Also somewhat expected after only a day. But I was happy with the progress. But throughout the day as mango started coming around, he was so gentle. And kiwi is getting much rougher as she nibbles on my fingers. To the point its more like biting then a nibble. I know the guy we got them from clipped their wings before we picked them up and managed to pull out some of mangos tail feathers in the process. So i wondered if maybe that was part of the problem or if maybe i was just messing with them too much on the first day. Although if i put my finger in the cage kiwi will come right up to gnaw but bites a bit hard, but usually will give really gentle kisses. Maybe they just don't like the hands because of a traumatic clipping experience or I'm pushing them too hard?
Anyway sorry for the long rant. I will try and get some pictures posted of my new babies as soon as i get a chance. Well, my wifes new babies i meant lol.
