  1. I do not have a cage anymore for Riamfada as I could not be bothered to take that back from the Jabris. The cage door would be wedged opened by the bar stand at any rate and served only to hold her mash bowl. To get Riam back to her room, I only need to ask her to fly back to her room. Asked her nicely. Such as here in video below. And video on Yingshiong, the shama who shared part of his life with me. Flying back into his room and into his cage at cue. A lot less stressful than trying to hunt him down from high above. Do think about training WITH them , and allowing them to train you too, so that goodnight be a lot more fun for all.
  2. I wish I know what to say. Despite your clear explicit describtions, there are too many unknown factors that came into play. I cannot add anything more than what Dave had said. I wish Jakob good recovery S
  3. If I wrote an earlier post in this forum which I felt is relevant in another section and thread, I normally will just put the URL to point to that post. This particular thread affected me so badly that I try to heal myself by posting that earlier post into here again. And if those who believe in reprimands and discipline and forceful coercion, even with bullwhips and electric prod, will be able even to dream of doing what I routinely do. 8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 All that I do is to extend to them the courtesy and the dignity due to fellow sentients of equal standing, be they birds or beasts. 4. Dominance training? Over a little ball of grey? How about getting out that bull whip and the electric prod? Step up is the precursor to friendship. Just like a handshake is to friendship To transmogrify a friendship stepup into punishment because you do not wish to understand your grey is a travesity. How do you like if I offer to shake your hand and give you a crushing handshake and grind your bones to dominate you? And give you an evil eye as well? You do not even care to see the emotion of your parrot to the point you got bitten and you blame the parrot and 'earthquake' them to punish them? Is that the way you teach your own 4 year old human child? by reprimand and punishment? And if they still do not understand, even more punishment? Using bullwhip and electric prod that you of course, do not wish to write about? or that you do not know?
  5. tarm, elvenking, and all others too. I am most happy to put the fear against total free flights. Believe me, that Overnighters Club is the most terrible place to be. Yet that required the successful recovery of the birdie. If the birdie is gone and not recovered, you will walk only as a shell of a person and as a zombie on Earth. No one will know if you can recover, as you will fade away. I think elvenking will agree with all that I said as we all seen in real life and real time that he walked that terrible road. YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE ON THAT ROAD EVER! ELVENKING AND I HAVE BEEN LUCKY. WE ARE AT LEAST IN THE OVERNIGHTERS CLUB. NOT THE ONE BEYOND THAT. WILL YOU EVER BE THAT LUCKY? In that freeflight list, I am considered a heretical madman and to be tarred and feathered on sight because of my advocating a safe intermediate ground of taking a birdy out on harness, especially a grey against all they say. I proceeded to design that harness and develope my system as can be read here http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/harness1.html Freeflight list do not even believe in the intermediate step of semi freeflight flying in warehouse until I first did that in 2002 and reported on in detail. Freeflight list was started by a person with a show with many birdies to chose from with more to take from. Prepared to use 'weight management' . If birdie do not come back fast enough, even more 'weight management'? If you are like them, go walk with them and that path. I, you, and others have that one and only one birdie that is our love and life. And not a flock to pick and choose, and to replace even. If you are like me, you can read my meticulous notes in my blog and walk with me. People who could not get a commercial harness on their parrot wrote back to me their parrot accepted Tink UltraLite harness, a harness just 3 grams in weight and they made to their size without bows , buckles and kitchen sink to 'adjust' that harness. Go into this thread here and see the URLs. How to make Tinkerbell Ultra-Lite Harness http://www.greyforums.net/forums/showthread.php?190575 If you all make and use Tinkerbell Ultra-Lite, I will walk alongside of you. I see no reason to advise on any commercial harness other than to tell you to throw that into the rubbish bin. Or you can take that up with that maker. Not with me. Even with the best of harness aka Tinkerbell Ultra-Lite, it must not just be a stuffing of the birdie inside. They live to 70 years and more. What is a few days, or even a few weeks to slowly bring them to like the harness? What is the hurry ? Are you in a race ? If so, harness usage is not for you. I took about a week as can be seen in my blog. I knew Riam accepted the harnesseven earlier, and I resisted a couple of days from completing that procedure to be sure it had been slow and easy on her. You can see Riam sticking her neck into the harness and actively assisting me in the harnessing as she loved it and knew that was the precursor of taking her out into the sunshine and adventure. What we have done can be done by you too. Be careful, be paranoid and be safe. And if you use Tinkerbell UltraLite, I promise you will not walk alone. And you can enjoy your birdie with you outside safely clipped or unclipped. You will not believe the magic that will come with that.
  6. I guess you must be referring to Riamfada. I am glad no one else here is crazy enough to do what I have done. I must do another repeat of my warning before I go further I strongly urged people here not to do free flights with any kind of parrot as FREE FLIGHT IS LIFE AND DEATH PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF UNLESS YOU DO KNOW. NEVER EVER FREE FLY WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE AS THIS CAN LEAD TO LOSS AND DEATH OF YOUR BIRD. Notwithstanding what you have seen, I am extremely conservative in my approach, a tiny step followed by another tiny step. All the earlier training of Riamfada in harness and leash in different wind conditions, cross wind and head and tail wind. And hide & seek recalls. Look at this if you dont know hide&seek recall. SA 2010 & current affairs // Cost of mash experiments & sexy cleavage// More Riam hide&seek recalls http://shanlung.livejournal.com/116336.html Also training in flying DOWN in great height, especially when I found castles here in Oman. Harry Potter // Rustaq // 1st overland into Lhasa http://shanlung.livejournal.com/105488.html I cannot repeat in this post the explicit details of what I had done which can be read in the URLs in that earlier posting of free flight photos. Perhaps it might be worth your while to go and read that , especially the warnings and more on what I went wrong. If that put you off free flight totally, I think I have done you a huge favour. Free flight is not necessary at all as the risks are so huge and Murphy do lurk just about everywhere. Even if Murphy aint around, parroty jokes can induce life shortening heart attacks. Allowing your Issac to be flighted at home, in a safe secure environment covered about 98% of all the good things a flighted birdie can get. Allowing your Issac to join you safely outside to fly in a good secure harness aka Tinkerbell UltraLite harness will add 1.9% to that 98% Total true free flight add 0.1% more but the risk of seeing the ball of grey becoming a speck and disappearing altogether is real. Hope you are much better now that Issac is back with you. But have you regained all the years you have lost in that 24 hours when he roamed about outside? I think not. But that is part of your cost of entering the Overnighters' Club. Try not to pay refresher dues on that Club. The refresher dues will be even more costly than the first time entry. I know that from first hand experience. Try to take my word for it. 7. How to make Tinkerbell Ultra-Lite Harness Harness is not the 'cure-all' and total answer. The training and understanding and your relationship with the bird is even more important Try to read all the URLs inside. The photos that you see in the writeup are only a tiny selection. That must be on Tinkerbell Ultra-Lite Harness. You understand I refuse to accept any questions on any other type of harness. You take it up with them directly and not with me. 8. Good that Issac is back home again. Tinkerbell Legacy, or Part 2 in Tinkerbell Webpage on how to live with flighted parrot at home http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/ might contain much that is useful. There might be answers there even to questions that you have not thought of asking yet.
  9. elvenking, Congratulations, on your successful and painful entry into the Overnighters Club with your recovery of Issac. A club that no member ever entered willingly and had to be dragged kicking and screaming and crying inside. Together with a dose of premature aging. A club that no member wish on their worse enemy or even on ex-spouse and mother-in-laws. Now you can go and enjoy life again.
  10. Elvenking That's what I was afraid of. I send you earlier that URL on gyrodrop on what I think was the best way to get a bird high on the tree hoping that be of use to you. I am sorry you chose not to read it. Flying down from high is very difficult for a bird. This is an aspect that had to be trained for. I wish you success and eventual recovery. Shanlung
  11. Good. That too. But now focus on getting him back especially as you located him in that clump of trees nearby.
  12. Elvenking, You do not have the luxury now of despair or panicking. All your mental energy must remain focused on that recovery. Issac now depend on you. The chance is still there with best efforts. But if you do not focus and proceed with all your efforts, the chance of his returning will be zero. Get out posters to flood the area, in concentric circles. And get more eyes (via rewards) to help you. Flood the schools to get kids to help You need firstly, to locate Issac. After location, you need to get Issac to come to you I do hope you trained with Issac on recalls as that will definately help. If you locate Issac high high up on a tree , flying down is one of the most difficult act for a bird not used to that. Read this. http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/w6gyrodrop.htm'>http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/w6gyrodrop.htm You never know if that help. Only when Issac is back that you can give yourself the luxury of panicking and feeling miserable. When he is back, you might have thoughts to wring his neck or fry him or cook him into a curry. Those thoughts are understandable. But focus your energy now to get him back. Warmest regards Shanlung 山 龍 http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/
  13. Paul, I do feel that you will be one of those who can live happily and well with a grey not withstanding that will be your first parrot. I was one who got a grey as my first parrot. I had wanted one for 30 years. I am so glad to finally did that. I had done my research, buying books and reading all that I could prior to that. Of which I found 95% of what was written ( to be fair, in 2001) were wrong altogether. Here is Tinkerbell with me. Tinkerbell then went on to bring magic into my life and touched the hearts of many others around the world. I wrote of the life we have to open a window to others on the world we lived in and on the training that we have done and the things we have done . For them to decide if living with a flighted grey at home is worth the while for them. Check out Tinkerbell website as that might be very helpful to you. http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/'>http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/ A summary of Tinkerbell can be found here http://shanlung.livejournal.com/8284.html If you are sensitive and can treat a grey with dignity and respect as an intelligent sentient, you should go and get a grey. I have looked at perhaps 20-30 greys. When I saw Tinkerbell for the first time, in my heart, I knew we were meant for each other. The money could not come out of my pocket fast enough especially as another person then was also looking at her. Go look at greys. There will be one that jumped out. The one that touch your heart (might look good, might look bad, or big, or small) will be the one you spend rest of your time with. You will find your money cannot come out of your pocket fast enough too. You find your life never to be the same after that. Warmest regards Shanlung 山龍 http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/
  14. If there are no underlying medical reasons , and obviously you do give enough life enhancement to Dorian in that he is allowed to be flighted, it might be the food. I just wrote on Tui that people with pluckers and who changed to Tinkerbell Mash or Mike Manna Mash found the plucking stopped. See how Tink Mash is made and perhaps you might like to try this too. 15. If there are no underlying medical reasons for the plucking, and your Tui is given lots of emotional and lifestyle caring, it might be with the diet. I have so many people writing to me that ever since they changed to Tinkerbell Mash that their birdie stopped their plucking. See how Tink Mash is made, and perhaps you might like to change too. 16. tarm, Happy mash making to you and your fid. All pure goodness that you make with love and with none of those shelf life extenders commercial parrot food companies added. For folks who might wonder what tarm was talking about, take a look into how Tinkerbell Mash is explicitly made and you decide for yourself. In days of belt tightening, Tink Mash is the cheapest, and yet the best and most nutritious food for your birdie by far. See and judge and decide for yourself. Morning with Harry & the decision// Sultan of Oman Palace// Tinkerbell Mash Batch 7 http://shanlung.livejournal.com/109957.html Tinkerbell Ultra-Lite harness was conceived of for Tinkerbell to enable her to go out with me in the mountains and forests and parks of Taiwan and given to the world in 2003 and improved and improved on. I asked only for a donation to Gerald Durrell Wildlife trust or for wildlife organisation of your choice. A design that is effective and simple to make and made fitted exactly to your birdie with no buckles, bows and whistles and kitchen sink to 'adjust' the size as if your birdie size yo-yo up and down instead of remaining constant. Sadly and most disgustingly, that design was hijacked in Oct 2005 by lowlife with 8-12 patents to 'protect' it. In the earlier days , that lowlife even lifted words I wrote to package with 'his harness'. Make me want to puke. 20. Much was said in an earlier thread in this forum on wing clipping http://www.greyforums.net/forums/showthread.php?8152-Wing-clipping/page4 I thought I resurrect an old letter I wrote there in March 2007 as what I said then is valid even now 88888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 Hi Dave, In an ideal world, what you say above may be right. The other extreme will be extremely severe clipping of wings. When I was in Riyadh and in a parrot shop, this grey jumped off the top of cage about 5 feet from ground. The sound of him hitting down, the spray of blood around him, and the screaming of that poor guy hurt me crazy. I do not wish ever to have another keel bone broken even if not in front of me. People clipped for a few key reasons. 1. They had been conditioned to that because of what they read or were told. This seemed to be peculiarly American. Tinkerbell wings were so nearly clipped by me at the beginning as the books I read all recommended that (all American books) as well as forums in 2002 when I first had Tinkerbell. I was lucky enough to bought a British parrot mag to give me second thoughts. 2. The sight of initial flights, the crashing into walls was extremely frightening and I thought my precious Tink was crazy in trying to fly through walls while I stumbled about chasing her with a pillow to cushion her falls after hitting the wall. Once again, I so nearly reached for that scissors and Tink the flyig grey of Taiwan so nearly did not exist. But that british mag persuaded me to let that continue for a few more days. She then found her flying skills to turn, slow, hover and stopped banging into walls. Folks, this episode is inevitable. Your birds may be natural fliers, but even so, they MUST develope their muscles , flying skills and sense of balance. But at this early stage, their speed will be very slow(even if it appeared fast to you) and chances of harm to them will be there. You can minimise this by letting them fledge in a small room, with curtains or rope nets around the walls for them to fly to and cling too. Or you can run around like me with a cushion. If you see a human toddler trying to walk and falling down, will you have fear for his/her safety and not ever let him discover balance and walk? Will you have him/her crawl for the rest of their life because you are afraid to see them fall? This is same as your choice for your bird. 3 By clipping wings and thinking thus the clipped bird will never fly away. I need not repeat my earlier postings of clipped birds that flown away. In what Dave said , that is true in an ideal world. Unfortunately, we live in the real world. But most people then went on to extrapolate that then, their bird will never be able to fly away. That is where I draw that line. So after you got that 'perfect clip' and your parrot then fly about 8 feet and not gaining height. But again, have that clip been tested under worse case condition? Such as a sudden blast of air horn , or a strange hat thrust in front to see if that parrot cannot gain height in a spook situation? Can you bear to do a sudden spook, or allow others to do that to your parrot? To see if that clipped wings hold good in spook conditions? And with Murphy at your elbows, how about throwing in that gust of wind at the same time? Can you ever guarantee such conditions will never ever occur to you? People had thought so. Their parrot paid heavier price than they did. Your choice again to see if you can beat those odds. On a different note Dave, I tried to log in to your old forum to let you and other friends there know about my last trip to be with Tink in Nov last year. If you did know, fine. If not, you might like to read this Tinkerbell Interlude photoset and videos, and start of next chapter of life. Also as to why I am now here in Brisbane , down under. http://shanlung.livejournal.com/65169.html Shanlung http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/ 8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 It might be amusing to note that Riamfada who is with me now came to me as a rescue. Her wing was clipped in the silliness that clipping her stopped her from flying away. She obviously flew away from that previous owner, landed in a garden, found by this lady, who decided I was a far better caregiver to be given to. This is Riamfada in some of her outings with me now.
