  1. i don't know if this helps, but maybe it will. how much do you know about her history? the reason i ask is that we had a husky mix that we got from a rescue when she was about 1 year old. its anybody's guess what that 1st year was like for her, but from what we saw from her over the years, it wasn't nice or good in any way shape or form. it took about 6 months to get her to "calm" down and become more at ease in our family. she became a wonderful and loving dog. but, and here's the but, every once in a while, for no reason that we could figure out or discover, she'd have what we could only call "flash backs". she'd become the scared, distrusting, angry dog that she was when we first got her. we never knew if it was a smell, a sound, a word or phrase that set her off. in time she'd come around and become our loving girl again, but it took time. each time lasted less than the time before, but it was still mystifying and scary. we just tried our best to act as normal as possible and give her extra love as she would allow it. i hope this helps.
  2. not yet! but they need to close on the house and so we'll have her by feb 14th. there was a glitch with the remaining bird. the one family changed their mind so another is in consideration. we've had our home visit and are good to go! i'm hoping this weekend will be the time. but at least we do have a time line, lol!

  3. my response to having pooh on my clothes is that if you own birds, you must be prepared to be decorated! its just the bird's way of designing a new "fashion statement", LOL i try so hard to have the latest in "fashion statements"! hahaha
  4. ah ha!!!! i understand! can't have too much "happy" time now can we, lol! but our birds can, hahaha!
  5. i haven't checked at any local health food places, but if they have hemp seed, would this be alright to use or do you have to buy it on line for use with a bird? i don't want to just assume it'd be safe for birds.
  6. we haven't gotten our cag yet either. we should have her by valentine's though. we do have a peach front conure that plucks! i ignore it as best as i can. her vet checks are always fine. we've tried meds, which worked! she was off meds and doing great, then we had to put one of our dogs to sleep and it started up again. i've added an "old" toy to her cage, a fuzzy tent that she'd ignored in the past. now she's pulling all the fuzz off and i'm hoping this will be enough to let her chest feathers grow back again. i'd do meds again, but want to see if this strategy works first. right now she's wearing her famous "gray underwear", but i'd love to see her back in her lime green "clothes" again!
  7. very good looking brood you have there mamacj! our oldest son and his family had a rescued boxer named murphy! he was a very loving and wonderful dog, but he was much older than they were told!!! he and lily are chasing bunnies together in a field full of flowers! i like to think that they aren't "alone" that they have each other now! thanks for the pics.
  8. thanks mamacj! sorry to hear about brandy but glad she's not in pain! lily started having horrible seizures saturday after thanksgiving. she was perfectly healthy as far as she acted, played, etc. we took her to a vet er that day and sunday their neuro specialist diagnosed the tumor! she was only going to get worse, more seizures, etc, so we gave her peace. we all miss her very much! looking forward to seeing your pics!
  9. here's pics of our "zoo" athena is our peach front conure. hermes is our siberian husky. lily is our husky mix rescue. we lost her to a brain tumor just after thanksgiving last year honey (mellona or lona some day) our newest family member. i took this visiting her today, she's playing with my keys. as soon as the last remaining bird's new family is ok'd, we'll be bringing honey home to her new forever home!
  10. mamacj i use dr mohan in reynoldsburg. he's wonderful and so is his "part time" partner. i can't remember the partner's name at the moment (serious brain freeze, lol), but the partner also has a practice in the cleveland area. i hope this helps!
  11. reynoldsburg!! we have an annual tomato festival since, many, many years ago a mr. livingston did something to make tomatoes more appealing and did a lot of work with veg. seeds!
  12. i have a peach front conure and she looks just like tweety! i've always heard that half moon conure's beaks are more "bone" colored, not all black. tweety sure is a cutey!!
  13. what a great name!! i love the reason you chose it!!
  14. wow, your family is pretty close!! we in "tomato town", lol!!! i can't wait to get her home!! hopefully the family interested in the last cockatoo will be able to make it this week to meet her!! once that one has a new family, we can bring lona home and get her settled in!!
  15. we have to start with our dog, a male siberian husky. our son had just finished a paper for school about hermes. considering a husky's personality and traditional use as a sled dog we thought hermes was a great name for him. when we got our peach front conure i looked to see what greek deity was about birds or had a bird. athena had an owl, so we had our athena! well 2 years later we found out athena is really a he, so we've shortened athena to thena. we just lost our rescued husky mix female, lily, to a brain tumor. but at one point we also had a box turtle i named herman. (we had greek deities, so why not herman and lily munster, lol) now we're about to adopt a grey named honey. not really a name i like. so i've done some searching for a deity that represents honey or bees, to honor her current name and its a roman deity named mellona. she'll be called lona. we'll go slow on that so she doesn't get confused too much. it's kind of cool because if you take hermes and athena (both greek) and see what the romans did, hermes is mercury and athena is minerva. all those m's, it just seems meant to be in a weird birdy way!!!
  16. mama cj i'm in ohio too, just east of columbus. we're adopting a cag as well. her owner passed away and the family couldn't keep any of her birds. there were 2 cockatoos and the grey. one cockatoo has been placed, the other has a family interested in her, but haven't been able to go see her yet due to the weather! so we've been waiting to bring our new family member home. these too birds haven't ever been "only" birds, that's why we're waiting. we don't want to cause any issues for either bird. we have a peach front conure and a husky.
  17. thanks! i can't wait to get her home and get started on becoming her new family! her "mom" passed away and she has made a really good relationship to that woman's daughter in the past several weeks. that family has been through so much and i know they're happy to see lona and the other 2 birds going to good homes! once the last cockatoo is placed, we'll be able to bring lona home. we understand that she and the remaining bird have never been "alone". it wouldn't be fair to the remaining bird to experience that at this time. we're visiting lona once a week. with all the hustle and bustle going on trying to go through belongings in the home, etc, we're limiting our visits to that so as not to overwhelm the birds. she seems to be handling the current confusion fairly well so far and i think she'll adjust to us fairly quickly, but she'll let us know, lol!
  18. thanks for the welcome! i've got pics of athena and our dog hermes, but don't have any of lona yet! i tried taking some with my phone yesterday and she was "shy", lol! she didn't like the phone in front of my face! (athena's the same way)! i've been reading about the terrible two's! wow! well, we got our 2 sons through it, i guess we can get lona through it! i know i'll have lots and lots of questions, i'm still learning as i go with athena! we'll all learn together and grow together. one step at a time, right!?!!!
  19. thanks for the welcome! i've been to visit her 3 times now, twice with my husband. the owner was a woman and she had lona from a baby. lona's coming with her cage, toys and food. the family has been awesome considering the circumstances. there were also 2 umbrella cockatoos as well. 1 has already gone to his new home, the other has a family interested in her. we've been patient about bringing lona home since the remaining cockatoo was acquired as a baby at the same time as lona so neither bird has ever been alone. i plan on feeding her and our peach front warm oatmeal in the evenings hoping that starts to create a bond with lona. athena does think that she's the biggest bird that was ever created, lol!! i've been telling her about her new "big little" sister and explaining how she's going to be a "little big" sister! i've tried starting clicker training with athena, hoping she'd catch on and then lona would be able to watch and want to learn as well, but athena is also a stubborn little stinker!! oh well, each will go at their own pace though! lona's never been trained to step up, but flies to your head then slides down to your shoulder. that's the 1st thing i need to teach her, is to step up. right now its winter and too cold for the birds to go outside, but i need them both ready for this come late spring and into the summer. i have smaller cages for both of them to be outside in since we have a couple of hawks in the neighborhood. athena loves to go outside and talk to the birdies and i know lona will enjoy it too! i have my work cut out for me, hahahaha!!!
  20. hi! i'm new here and have been searching the web for a place to get good advice. we are adopting a 2 1/2 yr old congo grey in the very near future. her owner passed away and we are going to be her forever home. we have a peach front conure, athena, who is almost 8 yrs old and a husky, hermes, who's 12 1/2 yrs old. i've done a lot of reading these past couple of weeks about rehoming, care, behavior, training, etc. i've read a lot about go at the bird's pace, there's a 2-3 week "honeymoon" period to get started, etc. so, i'm a bit confused at the moment! i do want to go at lona's pace, but i also don't want to not do something crucial during the first 2-3 weeks. any ideas, comments would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!
