  1. If you have questions, there are answers here. Welcome to the forum!
  2. Awwwwww! That does my heart good! Thank you for the uplifting pic. The new year is looking better already!
  3. Great story! Thanks Spock!!
  4. We had a problem with those moths a few years ago. They are hard to get rid of. You have to throw out any food that they are in and then seal all bird food and food in your pantry (like rice) in zip lock bags or something else that you can close with a seal. Eventually they go away when you eliminate their access to food.
  5. I had to go back and look at another members stories about his new bird. On October 28th he posted about how they had their bird Timmy for over a week and he made a few whistles. Suddenly on November second he posted that Timmy had come alive. Suddenly he was vocalizing like crazy. I would give him a little more time to get used to his new environment.
  6. I felt the same way before I got my TAG in September. He was actually flown in and my hubby went to pick him up at the airport. I wanted to do everything the exact, right way. He's been home with us for 3 months now and just like with a baby, I have come to realize that there is no exact or perfect when dealing with a living being with a personality of their own. Love and patience rule the game every time.
  7. Thank you Jayd. What a wonderful piece and so very true.
  8. Hello Morana and Zak! I love the international membership of this board. It's wonderful to meet people from all over the world that share the same love for their bird that I do!
  9. In that case, my second option (but it's a lot more expensive!) would be to try to set myself up to pet sit and take him to the vet myself. Unfortunately that is a short term solution. He has to go back into that house so the initial visit to the vet might be a waste in the long run. I can't believe that she doesn't see the difference between your bird and hers. Why would you invest in a pet like this and then not invest a little bit more to keep him healthy? Makes no sense to me. I wish I could be more helpful but it sounds like you have done all you can already.
  10. I would probably try a different approach. First I would have the administrators delete this thread and then invite the owner of the bird to visit this forum. Encourage her to join and meet up with other grey lovers. Perhaps the message can get across by others relating their experiences and approaches to loving and caring for a grey.
  11. The only caution I will give with the retrievers (I have a black lab) is that they are hard wired to "retrieve". My gentle giant goes nuts in bark mode whenever my grey flaps furiously. (He does that when he wants me, or food, or whatever.) I'm trying to retrain the lab but it's tough to knock out an inbread instinct. Interestingly, my grey will fly away if I bring him out when my 2 year old and 8 month old granddaughters are in the room and fly back to the room where the dogs are. He doesn't seem to see the dogs as a danger but these two little girls are a threat. Go figure.
  12. My biggest concern is that they wouldn't have cleaned the pine cones. I would be worried about pesticides or other possible contaminents since the pine cones most likely were not sanitized before the class project. What might be better is to recreate the project with them at home and completely sanitize the pine cone before putting on the peanut butter and seeds.
  13. Wow! They never cease to amaze me, and I LOVE the stories!!!
  14. I keep hoping to read an update that he has been found and returned home. Great news on the local Fox news story. You are certainly in my thoughts.
  15. Yes. He is 6 months old. I have had him for 2 and a half months.
  16. Hopefully the messages translate back to make sense! It is very nice to meet you and it sounds like you have some wonderful pets and especially your African Grey.
  17. Hello! It's great to meet you! (I was born in Alaska but we moved when I was still an infant so I didn't live there long.) Kudos to you for knowing more about your birds than the pet store. Thank goodness for the network and online ordering.
  18. I can't believe it's been two months already! Time flies when you're having fun!!!
  19. I think it also depends on the temperature of your house. A drastic change in temperature might be more detrimental than the actual outside temperature itself.
  20. I stay on all day but I'm not always at my computer.
  21. I peeked at your album. Beautiful bird! Cute kids, and dog! He is doing pretty good to let the kids hold him. I'm impressed!
  22. I would also add that you probably don't want to start out reaching your hand into his cage. Many birds don't like to see a hand coming into their home uninvited. I have seen others mention that their bird will bite them when he is inside the cage but not when he is out.

    Leg Band

Thank you. This is what I was hoping for: honest opinions with real life experience. I have heard the stories about bands getting caught on toys. I think that might have been toys from years ago. When I first got my Hahn's as a baby, I had a toy that was connected with an open ring. My little macaw's beak got impaled by this ring and I had to rush him to an emergency vet to have it cut off. From that moment on I made sure to check any toy and make sure it did not have an open ring. I can't see how a leg band could get caught on any current toys or cage parts. For now I'm planning to keep the band on. (On that note, I read a story once about a bird that got a string from a cage cover wrapped around his toe and he ended up losing the toe. I don't think that would lead people to believe that they shouldn't cover their birds.)

    Leg Band

What about the question of leaving the band on? I'm curious as to the opinions of the members. My grey is banded. I was planning to leave the band in place.
