We use one of the travel size aluminum cages as a sleep cage. Heavy duty, probably too heavy duty for our use. My girlfriend is insistent we get something bigger.

While I wait for my Grey to arrive here are some hi-jinks of my Senegal worth sharing.

I'm having a cage dilema! Kings cage is out of stock of all of their 306, 406, 506, 305, 405, and 505 models. What you may ask do these have in common? They all sport a 6mm bar size. We were going to order the 306 model but it's out of stock till september. Any thoughts on where i can get one? What would be a good plan B cage. We'll probably upgrade to stainless one day. Kinda wish I had saved more and just started off with stainless. HELP!

That was random. I'm mainly impressed by the fact that the bird is only 2.

I'm counting down about two weeks to bring mine home. She looks great. Maybe post a wider shot of the cage. There are nuances to cage layout that people here will be able to help you with.

It's worth checking out the other videos from this user.

Thanks for sharing this. Good to see something is being done.

I'm about to get a grey, but agree with everyone. My Senegal often flies across the room and lands on my knee and she's still rolling a piece of cardboard in her beak from the toy she was just demolishing.
-
I hope my grey will be like this in two years... and at same time I hope it's not swearing that much either. Very healthy looking bird, and flighted too! Such a chatter box.

To bring things back to what this thread was originally about. I feel like the few companies making american made stainless steel cages should get together and find a way to offer financing for their products. A well made stainless steel cage is a lifetime investment, it will likely last you longer than your current car if well cared for. If I could pay off a cage over a year or so I'd gladly pay interest on that. Currently people buy a cheap powder coat cage and start saving until the powder coat starts to break down and either buy another powder coat of varying quality or move up to stainless. Which is probably fine. However I think it sends a bad message to the pet trade that they don't need to cater to the higher end market if the low end is selling so well. It seems as if there will be no high quality cages 10 years from now. So many brands have either gone belly up or have turned to the same cut rate factories everyone else has. If these companies spent more than two minutes marketing themselves and the long term pay off of such an investment I think more people would choose to invest in better cages.

Walter and his new found wild friends

Correct me if I'm wrong those are living wild but are introduced species? Like the quakers and cherry head colonies you find throughout the country? -
Another morning with Emma african grey..

Great video clip. How old is Emma? -
Don't tempt me! I took a welding course at the art school I went to. If there were a welding shop that I could rent time I would make one myself. But working with stainless steel is a real pain I've been told. I did get pretty handy with aluminum.

That's crazy. It's hard being anywhere in North America to wrap your head around looking out the window and seeing anything with a hookbill just chilling there. -
Talked to Mark at Freedom Cage today. He said that only his powder coated cages are imported and that once the stock of those is done he'll stick with the stainless and not have anymore made. Instead of china his cages were coming from inda or pakistan. The powder coat version of those isn't as heavy duty as the kings 306, 406, or 506. However I've also read bad experiences dealing with him. So I don't know what to do.
-
Damn, I could of worked on that show. Oh well. Still not worth canceling my vacation and commuting to newark. Cool clip.
-
Also its worth mentioning I finally settled on just getting one of the Kings Cages for the time being. I call them up to ask how long they will take to deliver to my area and while I'm at it ask do you have this in stock. Turns out the heavier duty cages, the 306 406 and even the 506 are all out of stock. Anything with a 6mm bar size is held up till september. It's really frustrating how you either spend less than 1k or north of 2k with nothing in the middle. I'll eventually go stainless not because I feel I need stainless but because I don't trust these factories in china to not have something chemically nasty in or underneath that powder coating. I'll settle for something like that for now. I figure it won't go sour before I decide to make that change and be able to afford it.

Standard Congo, but we want a cage with a wider foot print.
-
I wonder how that works if you don't shave for a week. I think our sengal prefers me shaved since she generally prefers women. Or maybe she's advocating for my girlfriend. Hope our grey doesn't mind a little 5 o'clock shadow.

King's Cage Safety Leash: Is this even a good idea???
FirstPenguin replied to FirstPenguin's topic in The GREY Lounge
Poor Anna Grey. I think you highlighted one of the major flaws of this device. If your bird were perfectly calm the first time you used it, it might be ok. However, this is a nervous prey animal, the chances of that are pretty slim, and the chances they will never panic while hooked into these shackles is further. It's funny you mentioned the chain gangs in the old movies that was my first thought when I saw it. Thank you for doing such a thorough investigation. The weight comparison really drove it home and confirmed what I suspected. This gadget is nothing but heavy off the shelf parts. something truly designed for birds would not look like this. In fact I have one of those heavy rock n roll looking chain wallet that the attachment on the other end looks EXACTLY like the clasp used for this, just scaled one way or the other. Sounds like this has a heavier spring. Marc Marone and Richard King are a bag of cheap chinese tools. -
Very funny. I live near major city construction that will be going on for years. I'm pretty sure my Senegal is doing sounds reminiscent of the beeping and air horns she hears outside. They even are using explosives underground. You hear an air horn feel the building vibrate a second and then another air horn. Imagine if Burt heard that, sounds like you'd never hear the end of it. I get a Congo soon, by my luck something construction related will be the first thing he mimics.

A zon and a grey getting into trouble
FirstPenguin replied to Ray P's topic in Off-Topic Discussions
For me, this is the face of attitude in the 100 gram weight class. I went to answer the door and she picked up this whole pizza crust off my plate, flew to the top of the couch with it, and would not give it back. -
just realized I was reading the dimensions on their site wrong. I was comparing very different sized cages in regards to price. What I want is out of my price range. My girlfriend is insisting we get a 40" wide cage.
-
Their prices appear to be lower than Kings, Freedom, and a few other stainless steel cage makers. Unfortunately I've already put a deposit on a bird so time is ticking on when he'll be ready to come home. I am seriously considering this cage. It's got the external style feeders I like just like our California cage.
-
This is my Senegal Evie's. She's going to be joined by a new flock mate soon. We're getting a congo at the end of the month. Part of the reason I looking at this thread is to scope out what people are buying these days. I've finally come to a conclusion on what some of the bigger features I'm looking for in a cage. 1. External feeders: I have an older California Cage with the attachments that place the crocks partially outside of the cage so that less debris or droppings can fall in it. I really want this feature in the cage for the Congo. You can see them in the second picture. 2. externally visible screw heads: the look of it drives me nuts. Any suggestions? 90 percent of the cages offer use the flat flip out door that puts the dishes fully in the cage. I was hoping to get roughly a 30x40 foot print. Thanks.
