  1. Got it!!! Beet and carrot tops should be easy to come by... and probably the kale too. I may have to hid it in his oatmeal or something... he really dispises anything with a leaf.
  2. LOL! I'm glad you guys care! haha, i tell my non-fid parent friends about Sully's milestones.. and I get the "it's just a bird.. " WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!? He really has a personality... I'll tell ya! My hubby swore up and down that last night Sully said "eat" last night... lord help me if "eat" is that little piggy's first real word! lol
  3. Thanks Azzie & Judy!! slmclean- I scooped all the stuff out from the middle, cut it in half and baked it at 350ish for an hour. I scooped the flesh out after it had cooled. When I give it to them raw, I just chop it up. I usually don't give them the skin just because it doesn't seem to be chewed well!
  4. What would be considered a leafy green veggie? He doesn't seem to like leaves at all! Oh- and with the strawberries-- no pesticides! We grow them ourselves
  5. OH! and I forgot- seed and pellets are available all the time, although he rarely touches them.
  6. Because my other birds are sooooooooo picky (the only things besides seed and pellets they will touch are broccoli, strawberry tops, and egg) We were really wondering what would be a good diet for Sully... THEN when he would barely touch his seed, I was worried he wasn't eating enough... ah, and I got some great advice from here SO! I think we have a good diet figured out for Sully, and I wanted y'alls feedback on it. Morning (about 5a) Sully gets: A mixture of celery, broccoli, red apple, strawberries, and either egg or peanut butter. The majority is celery and broccoli, with a few pieces of apple and strawberries. In addition to that, i put something different in everyday.. like spinach, carrots, potatoes (just a little!) today and yesterday, it was pumpkin. Lunchtime: Sully will get: A couple pieces of pasta OR some veggies from my soup OR leftovers from dinner the night before if appropriate. He doesn't get a lot because he still has veggies left over from the morning before. Dinner: Sully usually gets a piece of what we're eating, if it's healthy. If not, he gets some rice or a random veggie from the fridge (he's not a big eater at night) Of course there is the occasional pretzel or cheeto he gets, but the snacks are usually kept at minimum. So how am I doing?
  7. Well, Sully LOVES pumpkin... I gave him raw pumpkin, and he wasn't CRAZY about it, but I also gave him some of the "guts" and he INHALED IT. SO- I baked the pumkin in the oven for an hour (til it got mushy) And now he can't get enough!!! Anyone have any pumpkin birdie recipies? I would like to make him some kind of cookie or cake with maybe some seed, and other veggies in as a treat for snack time. Any ideas?
  8. Cute!! I've never heard of just bananas! I may have to try them! Sully hasn't even had REAL bananas yet. Up until about three weeks ago, he wouldn't touch anything besides his strawberry tops... but now I can't get him off pumpkin!!! I'll try the bananas next! Thanks for the video
  9. That's great! The quakers will keep each other company when the kids are working on their school work, and provide an experience where the kids can watch the two talk to each other and interact Great idea on getting a pair Also, I've always loved quakers!!
  10. Wow. It's AMAZING how in one week, Sully has changed so much! He will be 6 months old on October 14. We have had him since July 11th, and he didn't do a lot of new things until just this week! In the past week, he has started to really bond with my husband as well-something he hasn't done, and we were concerned he would never bond with him. Also, he has started to mimic my laugh and has developed his "call" that I think will be what we use to call him. It's just a whistle but it's HIS whistle that he repeats after you do it! He also took his first voluntary bath in his water bowl this morning. lol it was an experience! I just finished college this week, so I think I'm going to be devoting my time to training him. I want to start off with simple tricks like touching things on comand and possibly working with him to put things in baskets later on. Do you think 6 months old (or almost) is a good time to train? He seems really impressionable right now, and I want to take advantage of that. Hope everyone is having a good weekend!
  11. We use newspaper to line our cages. I know a lot of places say it's not safe to use the newspaper because of the dyes or something in certain colors not being safe. However, all of our birds' cages have those grates across the bottom, that sit high enough that the birds can't get to the paper at all. I've also heard of using silicone mats (which I'm assuming gets expensive) but it may be worth it, if all you have to do is wipe it down!

    Pumpkin....

Those pictures are adorable! I was actually wondering the same thing about pumpkin seeds. I always roast mine and I wanted to give Sully some, but I wasn't sure. I can't wait to give him some pumpkin! He already had a little taste of my pumpkin slushee the other day
  13. Thank you Wow! Really? Well, I guess it is really good for them! We've been giving him the smash every morning, and it seems to really help. He hasn't been honking at all since we started it! I also cut his egg intake in half ( I now give him 1/3 of the white part of a boiled egg every other day) and give him peanut butter every day he doesn't get any egg. The one thing he really likes is pasta.. but it's gotta be the elbows! lol he just plays with flat noodles and gets the shells stuck on his beak! lol cute though! Here is Sully eating his green bean!
  14. Mornin everyone! I'm looking for some super inexpensive places to get toy parts. I've been selling toys for awhile now on ebay, and I'm hoping to buy parts in larger bulk so I can make more toys. What are some of your favorite places to get toy parts? I'm not sure if that's some type of advertising, which I know is not allowed on here. Thank you
  15. That is absolutely grey't advice, Jayde. Praying hard for this beautiful bird. Hopefully he can be treated!
  16. LMAO! Thanks for the laugh today azzie
  17. Sully hates water... And not just... "Ehh, I don't really wanna go in there"... it's more of a glare he gives me when I even take him into the shower... it's not pleasant! I know you're supposed to repeatedly try to get them to like showering by putting them in there anyway, but Sully just looks terrified by it. I've tried warm, cool, ice cold (like Joe likes it) and trickles, downpours, bath, shower... everything... he hates it. I have even tried the squirt bottle and that was a no-go... He's SO dander-y and itchy... Should I just make him do it anyway?
  18. All of my birds (with the exception of Romeo) will go after feathers. If there is one on the floor, they are all racing to see who can pick it up first! They don't mangle them though. Joe will go up and down that molted feather until it looks perfect enough to put back in!!! :laughs:
  19. Maybe their tastebuds are more directed at sweets and salts rather than spicy? Perhaps they don't have tastebuds sensitive to spice if that makes any sense?
  20. Uploaded with ImageShack.us Juliet or "Jules" as my dad often referred to her
  21. Thank you everyone. I spoke with my dad this morning and he is burying her today. He couldn't bare to do it in the middle of the night last night. He's putting her out in the yard next to the fence. She would always sit at the window and watch all the birds on the fence and tweet to them. She is being buried with her favorite toy... Thank you all for your continued prayers and thoughts. We need them Here is a picture of sweet "Jules" as my dad called her. Uploaded with ImageShack.us
  22. Yesterday, around 845 pm, my dad's beloved lovebird, Juliet passed away for reasons unknown. The day before, she was chirping to him, ringing her bell when he told her to, and playing. She filled a void in my fathers heart that he never knew existed. He is absolutely devestated by her being gone so quickly. She kept him company throughout the day, and with him being home all day by himself, I know he will still here her calling to him. She will be greatly missed by my mother, myself, and my husband as well: we all got to spend a little time with her before she departed for her long flight to heaven. I never knew such a little being could have such an impact on our lives. My father will not be getting another bird, and is taking her cage down first thing when he wakes up... He built her a huge 6.5 foot tall wooden cage...she loved every inch of it!!! Juliet, thank you for making my daddys battle with cancer bareable up til now, and I hope he can heal from his broken heart. Thank you for making sure my hair was always preened and that my daddys glasses were always crooked. Your brother Romeo will miss you dearly- and will miss our visits over to your house. Since the two of you are identical, it's hard to look at him right now... But his chirps are comforting. Thank you Juliet... We love you. Rest easy, sweet Juliet..."good night, good night. Parting is such sweet sorrow."
  23. My dad's sweet Juliet passed on this evening. In her short 3 years of life, she brought so much joy to my father. Im not sure what is worse... Missing her, or watching my father cry over her. Rest in peace, sweet baby.
  24. Juliet is still hanging in there. The vet gave her dandelion root, and said without bloodwork, there is no telling what is going on with her. I'm not satisfied with that answer to say the least. Sadly, my parents cannot afford the blood work, especially with my father's cancer care costs on the rise. I am heading over to my parents house in about an hour to take them some formula, a syringe, and babyfood. My dad says she is eating and drinking, but she just sits on the bottom of the incubator, with her beak resting on a perch. I figure the more food she eats, the better she will be...This is the same behavior as last time. She's nice and warm, and takes a bite of millet every few minutes my dad says. She's on the root every couple of hours, and I'm sure my parents will be up with her through out the night. I will update soon. Thanks for your prayers everyone
  25. Thanks Jayde and Azzie- I told him to do the same thing. My father has prostate cancer and Juliet has been kind of a distraction for him. I really hope she pulls through. This happened around the same time of year last time this happened. The vet said at the time that she may have gotten very cold quickly. The vet gave her some dandelion root, and told us to pray and heep her on a heating pad. It worked! I believe her appt. is in a little bit, for now she's in an incubator. Please pray for her She hurt her wing when she fell as well, this may not be a very happy ending post. I'll keep everyone updated! <3
