" All of this depends on the practices of the breeder. selective breeding is exactly the same process that happens in the wild. The only difference is that humans are manipulating what environmental traits are successful, as such its certainly possible to run a selective breeding program without producing sickly animals. " That is a good point ... no actual gene manipulation was done by humans just picking which bird was the best looking basically lol it would be like only good looking people repopulating the world ... the government is going to tell you who you have to marry from now on lol !

I also have a Chiweenie whos name is Wally lol and he I found out is a "designer" pet but I love him all the same we got him as a rescue for free at 10 weeks old that is the sad thin a rescue at that young of an age!!!!!

Well on this note I must say that in nature the odds might be 1:700 million or 1 in a billion but it is possible for this bird to come about on its own .... they are just taking select birds that have natural mutations and breeding them and from what I gathered there was no inbreeding in this case the bird is a genuine natural mutation. I think she is beautiful and would love one just as much as I do Abby.

Well its been almost a week now since I have heard Abby talk ... my wife hears her talk all the time when I am not in the room or at work ....
-
Well peanuts peeked her interest today made her go nuts in her cage and while the door was open she would come out and then keep her body in and stretch her head out as far as she could to get it and did a lot of simple chips and high pitch whistles so we will see where we can go with this.
-
Well when I first posted on this site about my Abbys talking or lack of it around me it was well assumed that she was just getting adjusted and what not. Well now its just obvious that she prefers to talk for my wife but not me,come out of her cage for me but not her lol. Like she has split her bonding with both of us but never with both of us in the same room .... she will talk for my wife but not when im in the room (at first it was when she knew I was not home now its just when im not it the room lol )and she wont come out of her cage for my wife but she will do just about any thing for me even with my wife in the room .... so I have only got to hear her talk like 3 times tops .... this makes me so sad ... I praised her so much when I heard her talk but only got that one word out of her .... should I kind of ignore her maybe I hate to do this but maybe she is happy with the attention that she gets from me and wont talk for that reason .... I know everyone says patience is the name of them game but Over all Abby and I are leaps and bounds ahead of the game with her length of time she has been here and I guess I am just always just searching for that next new bit of knowledge how ever it may be aquired.

I tried using some wire I found at Home Depot. Its used for drop panel ceilings works really well BE FOR Abby gets on it lol would probably work great for a mid size to small bird but just not enough bounce for Greys' ... maybe some one on here knows where to go to find some 1/8" wire ... that's what I was told to use on one site I found .... Stainless Preferred but I can keep an eye on it to make sure no rusting or corrosion of any kind occurs.

Thanks I figured vinegar was going to be the answer I guess this lady was not able to get some spots off lol some and they are really small are just stubborn thanks for the advice!

OK I know it happens to everyone well almost everyone, your bird poops on the side of the cage and you don't see it or have been gone all day and next thing you know its caked on to the cage at the bottom between the bars. Not the removable grate to keep them from getting to the paper or poop tray but on the door and sides the actual cage part. So my question is this ... if I am going to take the time today to take Abby's cage all the way apart what is the best thing to use to clean it .... just good old hot water and elbow grease? Or is there some magic house hold product that makes it easier? I cleaned most of her cage (actually my wife did bless her heart Abby doesn't even like her and she still did it to get on her good side )but still have a few spots yet and some of this poop was the worst to get off took hours my wife said! Thanks for your help on what to use and not to use and what works and what doesn't! I am sure everyone else will appreciate it too.

OK I know I dont know the formal name for it if it has one, but approximately how long should the rope be to make a decent size hanging spiral rope stand for my Abby I know how to make it just dont know what a good "TOTAL" length for the rope is to make a nice size hanging spiral rope. Any suggestions or measurements would be welcome .... remember im looking for the ropes total length thanks everyone.!

Well I trust you Dave and thats what I would have guessed would be the best too would be powder coated which means im going to re track my steps threw this board and see where I found it because I am sure I remember thinking if powder coating was not safe then what is ( because I know a few things about powder coating from working on cars )? I will try and track down where I saw it at and see if it was on this board ... we dont want bad info floating around here now do we!
-
I could have swore I read on this board that Powder Coated Cages were NOT a good idea? Is this right cause I saw one of the cages that was put in this post for us to look at and give our opinions on was powder coated.

If my Abby has slept on her swing for years and years and years( her whole life basically ) and I want to switch her to a sleeping box/tube or what ever you want to call it should I just take her swing out and put that in and she will figure it out or how should I go about this!!!!!????!!!??!?!?!?!?!?

Acquired a pair of African Greys very recently
AbbysDaddy replied to mills's topic in The GREY Lounge
Well I wish you luck Mills, I'm sorry this might be mean but I dont think any "pet" store should be allowed to sell these birds ... if the store doesn't know anything then what has happened to the birds be for now .... what if they really are wild and made their way into the states .... sounds like the guy who had the pets store didnt know what he was doing when he got them .... he should have been giving them the time of their life while they were there... every BIRD store I have seen has the parrots out all day ... they play with them and keep them happy not like this guy describes. Sorry just my 2 cents worth ... hope things go well for you Mills .... people in here know what they are talking about. -
Out of all of the words my bird knows... and that's only about 5 sadly (at 8 yrs old) she learned my dogs name and all I have been saying to her are the words she knows lol trying to get something out her ( she does talk a lot more when I'm at work I have videotaped her ) so this defiantly shows that they pay attention to everything you do even if your not paying attention to them. So be on your best behavior!!!!! lol And lastly does any one have a recommendation on what bird phonics CD to get to play when no one is home at the house? Maybe one they have used personally not just one they found online please!

judygram wrote: This I do know ... when I was chasing her around it was to corral her not to get her out of the cage. Like I said she was not landing on anything safe. Any who gots to go now and get me and her ready for a bath. Thanks for your great advice guys and keep it coming I will add it to my bank of knowledge and wealth I already own.!!

wow thats alot of toys you have running along your celing

Maybe I will back off when she is in one of those modes ... she is great today growls again when I pet her but it wasn't as bad as yesterday when she was pissed. Its more like a scared one today and very soft .... I had to chase her yesterday cause she was not landing on any thing safe lol ... on the pictures hanging on the walls ... lights (all be it they were cool florescent lights I still don't want her landing on them I haven't got all of them changed yet. Oh well we cant do anything about yesterday just prepare for today .... thanks for the advice on it probably not being hormonal ... and the biting doesn't bother me when it does happen I can take pain rather well. I just hope I don't screw up again and have to chase her around the house ... maybe she will just fly straight to her stand like she did for a few days ... or maybe her curiosity is getting a little stronger since she is in a new place ... she has been in every room but not very much just the bathroom some times and the bed room and spare room to see them a few times. Most likely its just like Dan said and she just wanted to be left alone yesterday. Well Abby is pacing her cage looking at me right now and putting her foot up so I guess she wants out lol .... Im going to take her into the bathroom ... see you all later!

LOL thats a good question I spent 3 hours at Home Depot trying to figure it out ... all the parts minus the wood were bought in plumbing where all the fitting and pipe are. I belive the part screwed to the wood is called a wall hanger or a wall mount ... either way it shouldn't be too hard to find ... and the metal pipe was just some scrap they had there that they actually gave me ... I had him just thread the unfinished end so I could screw on a PVC fitting that was the same diameter and was threaded on one end and would allow the rest of the stand (which is pvc the rest of the way up) to be pressed together NOT glued .... works out great and allows you to rearrange it and move it around

Long story short Abby was being a little stinker today and I wanted her out of her cage so when I went to pick her up she lifted her foot like normal and then started to fly out of the cage like hahahaha I tricked you. By the time I actually got her on my hand I had some pretty hard bites on the web of my hand between my thumb and index finger. Three total one was actually a lot worse than I thought I was dripping blood on my clothes. I never yelled or screamed or moved violently so she thinks it didn't hurt and this is the first time she has done this since I got her .... not even when I brought her home was she this difficult. What could her problem have been. I have heard its breeding season ... could she just be "in heat" if that is the right term to use, and this be causing her weird behavior .... things were going soo good and I feel like we took a huge step back....!

Post edited by: AbbysDaddy, at: 2010/01/02 04:55
