  1. Do read the labels on both canned and frozen to avoid added salt and sugars. You can also hide some of his food in little paper bags or cardboard rolls but let him see you hide them first so He knows what is in there. Foraging will help to occupy his mind and his time.

  4. We have an Umbie Too, an Elanora Too 4 Cockatiels, 2 Parakeets and Pookie the CAG. Pookie gets along best with the Elanora she allows him on her cage once in a while. She cannot interact with the Umbie he is just too facinated with her and I don't trust him, the budgies and Tiels just ignore the larger birds. I think Pookie would like to have all the humans to herself best of all.
  5. Sometimes the paint itself contains metal so I would have him checked you would feel just awful if he got sick.
  6. sprouted seeds and grains do have higher food value than dry foods. Why Sprout? Sprouting seeds increases their nutritional value by an incredible amount. Not only vitamins but natural enzymes and phytochemicals as well. Sprouting is easy to do and birds usually love them. Sprouts should be fed when the tails appear, usually around 1/8th of an inch but for legumes they should be 1/4th an inch. What to Sprout Make sure to research any grain/legume/seed that you plan to sprout. Not all are safe to give to birds in their raw or sprouted state (especially true of beans). Some Safe Seeds / Grains * Amaranth * Quinoa * Wheat berries * Rye Berries * Oat Groats * Red Clover * Alfalfa * Broccoli * Safflower * Gray Striped Sunflower (not black oil as they are way too fattening!) * Whole Millet * Sesame Seeds Safe Legumes (sprout to 1/4 inch tails) * Adzuki Beans * Mung Beans, * Red lentils * Green Lentils * French Lentils Do rinse and refrigerate as soon as they reach the desired growth they should keep about a week in the frige.
  7. Not really like a human digestive system. Can you tell us what he is offered in the way of food? Can you get him to a vet or at least call one, they have very little in the way of reserve energy so when you see something is wrong then you need to move fast to get some help. Please let us know what happens next and how Baka is doing.
  8. My intent was not to "Diss" anyone, just to point out the hidden nature of fat in the blood verses weight. All of us want the very best for our birds -the healthiest lives and the most stable homes and hope their emotional state remains balanced. At the recent Parrot Festival here in Texas it was pointed out that birds today often live shorter lives than 20 years ago even though we know so much more about toxic issues, better nutrition ext. so we do need to work harder at exercise, less feedings perhaps and discover more about what will keep our precious feathered friends well and active into their later years. (I know some of these statistics may be influenced by first time owner who do not have a clue before they buy a bird. Not knocking first time people we all had to start somewhere.)
  9. Glad to meet you Jbird so nice to hear how your Grey is aging well.
  10. This sounds like an over preening behavior, he may need more foraging or shredder type toys available to give him something else to chew on. Can you give us a little back ground information such as diet, type of cage and if you have the heat on currently? If it is only occurring on the tail and you have a young bird he may be damaging those feathers when playing causing him to over groom that area. Have you looked closely at the area and determined there is no viable problem on the skin?
  11. One of my friends had it done years ago and she is still pain free. They have improved the procedures since then and I know they now have an endoscopic procedure as well. Wishing you a successful surgery and a rapid healing.
  12. Yay celebrate now, pouted for 4 days...No ping so no active server-hoped the forum would reappear.

  14. Pookie is 21 years old and has lived with us for 2 of those years.
  15. I agree with Jess it is more the individual birds interest and inclination than weather they are male or female.
  16. Good for her! Pookie had never flown in all her 20 years before arriving in our home.
  17. Scary encounter, those little alien minds take such sudden turns of direction. Heal fast!
  18. I am thinking you won't know what his reaction will be until you start the new schedule. I would explain it to him and perhaps leave the TV on either a music channel or talk shows for him. My flock puts up with me working but it is what is normal at my house. They do make a some DVD's that loop for birds to watch and listen to. I would make certain you get to interact with him both before and after work each day and give him extra love on the weekends. You might consider a webcam to keep an eye on him and invest in some new toys to take apart of figure out.
  19. Wonderful! She is doing so well I do wonder what makes them so clumsy though?
  20. If that doesn't work then try chopping it all up in very small pieces and mixing it together. They seem to accept it faster that way.
