  1. Colors ladies! I have read that if it is baby or kid safe, it is bird safe. Thanks for all the tips. http://www.olympic.com/lowes/paint_products/going_green/index.htm Also, if the paint has no VOC's it is totally harmeless to birds and animals and better for people too. http://articles.directorym.net/Bird_Safe_Paint-a995754.html Thanks Pat, Mesa loves orange too...wow would that be a bright room! I haven't noticed that she objects to any particular colors at all. Post edited by: MrsB, at: 2009/04/21 22:51<br><br>Post edited by: MrsB, at: 2009/04/21 22:53
  2. Mesa's favs are: Her mash, cauliflower steamed, broccoli steamed, papaya, canteloupe, green peas & green beans raw, nuts of any variety, apples, carrots steamed, yam or sweet potato. There is an equally long list of things she "tolerates" and "dislikes".
  3. Hey everyone, I am going to paint Mesa's bedroom. I haven't read anything about this, but does anyone know if they favor some colors over others, or just like bright colors? Anyone know if there would be anything to haveing cool tones vs. warm ones, bright vs. dull color? Opinions? Know? Thanks! (PS, she has not moved into it yes, so I do know NOT to paint it with her in it!) <br><br>Post edited by: MrsB, at: 2009/04/21 20:57
  4. I can't find this on here yet, hopefully it is not a duplicate. Just saw this in another bird group and borrowed it. Very scary! "Hello, I don't know if any of you have read about HR 669, but I want to bring it to your attention. It's bad news. In a nutshell, if it passes, you will not be able to buy, sell, or even give away any animal that is not native to the United States, including birds. Companies will not be allowed to make products for non native animals. You will not be allowed to transport them across state lines. Some people say this is aimed at poisonous snakes, monkeys, etc., but that is not how it's written. This law must be stopped. You can read all of the details and help kill this law at: the American Federation of Aviculture's view of HHR 669 http://www.afabirds.org/HR669.shtml Please take action before its hearing on April 23, 2009." " I hope people reading this will study the web site linked below... http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-669 Take note of the co-sponsors of this bill and their party affiliation, and if they are in your district (or even if not), write, call, email, and let them know what you think about it."

    New Ekkie!

Thank-you!! So, his name is Kramer, but we will change it. We are going to call him "Verde", for obvious reasons, but also b/c of Mesa, "Mesa Verde", we love Verde salsa too..lol. The Ekkie was hubby's first choice, and he came up with Verde when we were researching. I got Mesa, he gets Verde. Plus, there are three of us human girls, plus Mesa. He is dying for a "guy" to balance the scale a bit. Erika, I have been looking at http://www.landofvos.com/phpBB2/index.php Maybe peep over there and see what you think. Also, you said you got Tigger when he was five, when is their sexual maturity? Did you ever have any issues with him wanting any of you too much?, if you know what I mean! The lady who has him now says he has been extra friendly with her, and giving her hubby some head bobbing/lunging (not moving his body) when her hubby comes too close to her and him (Kramer) when they are sitting together. I wonder if that is b/c she has been his main provider and hand weaned him. Her hubby is in the Air Force and tends to be gone for sometimes 8 months at time. Could that be a factor?<br><br>Post edited by: MrsB, at: 2009/04/20 06:09
  6. Thanks for the compliments and the encouragement re: the Ekkie. Lyric, you are correct! I did post an update in the non Grey area!
  7. This is a perfect example of someone with creative thinking. I love this, Mesa loves this. I have them on different levels on her tree so she has to go seek them out. So simple, and cheap and so usefull and excellent! Thank-you for sharing that, so much.
  8. Question, we have apple trees, that I would love to bring in for Mesa to play on/chew on. However, we have only owned the house two years. I have zero clue if the last owner used any pesticides on it. I suspect she didn't do anything, the trees were let go and crazy bad and not cared for in years per our Arborist, when we got it. How far back do you have to have history b/f you can safely use it?
  9. This is great you guys! I was wondering if I could change a name, I read somewhere online that it is a good idea, new home, new identity etc. for them. I'm gonna do it. Um, BTW. I have always wanted a tiny dog, think Yorkie or Doxie, and when I get him or her, his/her name will be "Bubba", I think it is hilarious! Lol!
  10. Hi Funny Farm, I am from Kelowna, BC...Now living in Colorado. Nice to see you hear, I am new and reading through everthing so my "Hello" is a little delayed!

    New Ekkie!

So, I have spoken with a couple of you but figured I'd update. The lady with the Ekkie,(SI 5 YO Male) that I was worried was just a scam ended up calling me. It was awesome! We talked for an hour! He sounds great! They are his only home, and they are re-homing IF they can find the perfect match b/c she used to stay at home, and now works and he is not getting the time he deserves. She feels terribly guilty, and is terrified at the thought that he will get bounced around. So, she wants an "open adoption", and if for any reason we can no longer keep him or if he is not happy with us, she wants him back. Even if it is 5-10 years from now, and if we don't agree to that, she won't do it. She wants to stay in touch, get updates etc. I LOVE this. It makes me know that she cares about him, and that he was raised with love and care. I could hear him kissing her "SMACK" while we were talking. He eats a great diet, and really most things are the same, like the bird bread etc that I feed. So, no all seed diet to deal with. She says he is a love bug, and loves to be with his people. He has never bitten, and has an easy going temperment. She is going to consult this friend of a friend who is an avian behavoiralist and see what the best thing is to do, should we go there first, should she bring him here? ETC. She was excited she said, and relieved to speak with me and feels really great about it, and "thinks this will work out well"! She sounded almost as excited as me! YAY! Maybe this will happen! I told her to go take care of her family stuff (sister in labor!) and to call me back when it was quiet. I feel confidant now that she is legit. She laughed and told me she was gonna mess with me and email me and say, "Send me the money and I'll bring the bird!" HA HA! Funny lady. :pinch: She said she'll call this weekend, or beginning of this week. Yeah! Erika, do you prefer or reccomend a great Ekkie site to learn from?

    Play Food/Foraging

Just got it in the Asian food section at the grocery store. They are in an 8.5'' round hard plastic package. And they are cheap, even better!
  13. So far Mesa seems to love everyone pretty equally, but does give everyone but me some "lip" sometimes about stepping up etc. But we have made sure that she has to step up and meet everyone new. She goes out with me and meets new people. And of course with two teen daughters (one is 20 now MOM! ) there are always teens coming through, they all handle her and interact with her. And we want to make sure that continues. Even if she doesn't go to someone right away, she will after a bit. We really want to make her social and adaptable to any situation. What if something happened to one of us? We want her to be able to "roll with anything" and do it comfortably too. Plus, we wanted a family pet, so we'll hope that if we continue like this, she'll be less likey to attach to one of us. HOPE. We'll see!
  14. Thanks Y'all! OK, so the strawberry does look and taste good, but she won't touch it. No way. B) Go figure. She just got her tent yesterday, so no real interest yet. She is cautious but not afraid, of anything really which is so nice! I put treats in it and she went in to retreive them. She loves to bury her little head behind the pillows on the couch, sticking her little butt up in the air-Lol. It is so funny. So we thought she may like to hide in the tent. We'll just let her get to know it and then see!

    Play Food/Foraging

Yup, b/c it is only 200 degrees, it is like a very slow dry more than a bake. If you feel it is totally dried before then, then you can take them out for sure. They just have to be completely hard and dry!

    Play Food/Foraging

OMG..I dunno how I screwed that up. I just noticed I put it in the wrong spot again! I swear I thought I put it under recipes like you said Erika! Should it be deleted so I can do it correctly? DOH
  17. Should I write her, and ask? Or just wait and see if she calls tonight? Why would anyone be so mean!??

    Play Food/Foraging

Oh! Thanks Erika, I didn't know where it should go...I'll put it there too...is it a toy? Food? Recipe? Build your own plaything? I can't decide!
  19. In another group of mine, someone posted about these foraging foot rolls for sale. The idea is great, you hide food in these rolls that are edible. So, I read about them and figured they were a great idea, but that I would try to make them first before paying for them. I even wrote the company for details. You get Rice Paper, and put it in water until it is totally soft. You lay it out on a flat surface (cutting board)and put dried seeds, nuts and dried fruit in it. Not too full, you want them to have to dig through the layers to the center. The sky is the limit to what you can put in there, but no wet or fresh ingredients. Then you roll them up, end to end, basically like a burrito or a wrap. Then you place it on a baking sheet & into the oven at 200 degrees for about 5 hours. Turn them over from time to time so they dry out on both sides completely. They should be hard and dried all the way through when they are ready to come out. They will be brittle, so handle with care. But, the birds will smell the goodies, and try to break into it, and have fun getting through the layers! The picture is HUGE but they are really about 3.5'' long and 1'' wide. <br><br>Post edited by: MrsB, at: 2009/04/17 00:28
  20. OK! But she didn't call or email! Now I am wondering if it was just a scam! I am so worried that it is now!! I'll keep you posted! YES! Fingers Crossed!

    Which Bird!?

I would suggest doing a lot of reading on Cockatoos in general as pets. I have been told, and read many times that they do not make good pets. I have also read that they are the #1 re-homed bird, they are loving, and cuddly and sweet, but they are emotional, needy and clingy. Really do your reading, there are many other species that would be "easier". If you work outside the home, or don't have hours a day to devote, I would reconsider the cockatoo. IMO... Good luck with your decision, and keep us posted.
  22. Well...funny you should say that.....We originally were looking at an SI Male Eclectus as a choice but couldn't find one, TAG was our other top choice and we were able to find Mesa. Then a few days ago, I stumble upon an ad for a 5 year old SI Male! A GREAT deal. We are a little leary of a re-homed bird (long story) but I am going to talk with the lady tonight... so maybe! I am trying not to get too excited but I am! Now, I have to try and learn about introductions. Although, I would have to join another board! Thanks again Judy!<br><br>Post edited by: MrsB, at: 2009/04/16 01:30
