OMG I was just talking about this same exact thing with my mom the other day...I told her about my getting Chimay a harness, and she told me to take her cat stroller instead. Her cats only used it for one summer like three years ago, and she's worried that her grand-bird will be snatched up by a hawk or something if we take him out on the harness. I can certainly see her concern, but we're very attentive parents and I'm sure we'll be fine. BUT if Chimay does not take to the harness, I think we're going to try and fabricate some sort of perch to install inside the stroller

We used to make the sock-toy for my cat when I was little...we'd fill it up with catnip and tie it off and watch the FUN BEGIN!! She NEVER played with toys, except her catnip sock. Lol! That might be why she was so fat. No activity unless there was a catnip sock around. Sorry for the unrelated rant, the sock toy thing got me thinking about her. R.I.P. Nikki

Aaahhhhh I love baby pictures!! Your little Ecko is growing up so fast, and he's a beautiful baby.

Welcome! GreYt pictures of your flock and I ALSO heart the name AppleJax! Can't wait to hear more about them, and I hope that Rhett's feather chewing subsides

Good idea Judy....yeah I got a little hot there for a moment

I can't believe what I'm reading....I sincerely hope you're joking. If you didn't already know what a SCAM it is to even consider buying a bird from a place like Cameroon, then I have trouble believing that you even have the knowledge and experience necessary to keep these desired imports alive, let alone happy and healthy. Please find another way to help the needy... I'm sure that they would be much more appreciative of clothing, food, water, educational funding, etc. than the opportunity to PAY to oogle pretty and cute animals. By trying to figure out a way to get AROUND the laws put in place to protect these species, you are in fact SUPPORTING the art of illegal trade.

Question for all you harness users out there....
chimaysmommy replied to chimaysmommy's topic in Training
That was my thinking exactly...I've been working with him a lot on the wing pickup (I think he's ticklish under his left wing b/c he fusses much more when I handle that one. Ha ha), and getting used to seeing the harness collar coming towards his face. I stick my fingers through the collar holding a pine nut, and hold up one end with my other hand. I am just SO excited for when that time comes when we can take him outside! Just trying to push my own excitement aside and go with his flow...Thanks for all of the feedback! I'd rather let my $35 go to waste than towel him in order to get him to use it. No offense intended to Marauder.

Post edited by: chimaysmommy, at: 2009/04/27 18:05 -
I've been working with Chimay for a few days to get him acquainted with his new Aviator Harness, and wanted to get your input.... How long did it take your grey(s) to be comfortable enough to actually have the harness put on for the first time? Chimay allowed me to put the collar over his head, and we nearly got the harness all the way on (wings in and all), and as I tried to secure the slide to the appropriate tightness I think he could sense my lack of experience with the harness and he started to fuss. It's only been a few days since we got it, and I don't want to push him too quickly. I know that each grey is different, but wanted to get an idea so I know whether to slow it down or not. Thanks everyone!

Well yesterday, my mom, my boyf and I went to the Columbus Zoo yesterday and there was an exhibit with 9 or 10 greys in it! Unfortunately we caught them right around naptime so only two of them were climbing around their huge enclosure. You can tell that they primarily reside in an area near a large parking lot and major road because they exhibited a wide variety of car alarms, car horns, and sirens. Ha ha! There was a sign next to the exhibit, educating people about Greys--where they come from and the dangers posed to their natural habitat. Plus, a nice little side-note saying that they are wild animals and belong in the wild, NOT in our living rooms. I felt a little insulted! Ha ha...j/k. The photos I took on my blackberry were too large to post to the forum, so I've uploaded the best ones to my photo album if anyone would like to take a look! Have a Greyt day!

Aaww!!! Too cute...

I don't believe so either...and make sure you're looking for aloe vera juice, and no oil.

Howdy Howdy. Nice to meet ya!

Welcome Ashlen!! Can't wait to hear more about your newest family member! What sort of furry/feathered friends do you have now? -
Eee!!!! I was too!
-
Yay! Good luck to you too JillyBeanz! Surprisingly enough, yesterday's online order of the Aviator harness has already been delivered! :woohoo: I started working with Chimay yesterday on letting me handle his wings, so we probably won't introduce the harness until we work on that a little bit more.

Such a pretty TAG...You're a knitter? Me too! Actually I've been out of practice for a while. I'm feeling inspired to pick it up again!

Marauder and Dave, I am SO jealous of both of you! Lol...I would LOVE to get the chance to meet Dr. P! I check on the Alex Foundation's website from time to time checking the schedule there. Hopefully she'll be within a reasonable driving distance to me in the future. Jamalbirdbiz, since you have not clarified what you meant by "you are wrong for that" I'm going to run with my assumption...I took that to mean that you feel that we are wrong for believing that Alex was NOT an abused and neglected "lab rat." Let me just suggest that you not accuse anyone here of being wrong about something unless you're willing to back that up with a little explanation. We provided plenty of explanation to back up our belief that Alex was LOVED LOVED LOVED by everyone that he worked with. You clearly had no idea who Alex or Dr. Pepperburg were when you started this thread, nor that any of us knew who they were...So to reiterate my earlier point, DO YOUR RESEARCH

Post edited by: chimaysmommy, at: 2009/04/24 16:02

oops...not sure how that double post happened. sorry!

Karma to you for acting quickly!! Sounds like you've had quite an ordeal! As far as the smoke inhalation, with as sensitive as our fids' respiratory systems are I would think that she would have shown a sign of having been affected by it by now. However, I am rather inexperienced on the subject so this is just my assumption. Hopefully someone here can give more educated input on this...keep us posted!

Eli in good spirits again today?
-
Well it's done! I finally quit him-hawing around the subject and ordered the Aviator Harness (in red of course). Hopefully Chimay takes to it easily...he's been SO ACCEPTING of all other new things I figured it best to jump on the opportunity while he's still young and open minded. Ha ha! Wish him luck!
-
Welcome you two!! This forum is fantastic, and so are the people in it. Looking forward to more on you and Koko! Hopefully more pictures!
-
With as quickly as he picks up on things I'm starting to think he will eventually out-learn me! Ha ha...
-
That sounds like quite an ordeal each morning, but it's kinda cute! Chimay hasn't adopted any of our neighbors as of yet....in fact he's more than likely going to make enemies as we have a lot of dog-apartments surrounding us and a lot of them bark out of the window thru the day. So we're probably going to wind up with a barking bird at some point when he learns how.

Foods your grey "should" eat but won't
chimaysmommy replied to Joolesgreyuk's topic in The GREY Lounge
Chimay is a freaking piglet....there is nothing he won't eat, EXCEPT the one food item that his vet recommended. Yogurt! He absolutely won't touch the stuff. During his first vet visit, the Dr. recommended 1/2 spoonful of yogurt per day for him to get a certain bacteria level under control. I tried and tried, and successfully hid it in his birdie bread a few times but he figured me out. By the time his follow up vet visit rolled around, his bloodwork came back just fine so I'm not worried about yogurt anymore. -
I agree...could you explain? I saw this post earlier and didn't quite know what you were talking about.
