Hello, I agree with both of you, with one exception - the place we got Spencer. I trust them. Ralph

Hi, she, I was watching the conversation between you and Dave, and wanted to let you know Cracker is in my thoughts and prayers.

Shady is smart! HAS to be a boy

Hey! Over the years, I've read in BirdTalk of people taking their parrots to cafes and even on errands to get them socialized. I don't think cafes and stores allow birds not in carriers. It seems like it would be against health laws. Am I wrong? I'd love to take Spencer (on his harness) and Lindsay, our Quaker (her wings were mangled by PetSmart where we got her) if it were allowed.

I noticed that Spencer gets tired around 4 PM, so yesterday and today, I took him in the bedroom around that time, and he stayed on my headrest (without chewing it!!!). We stayed in there for a hour, then I brought him back out! I'm not sure why, but last night was great! Dotty and I brought him into the bedroom, as we usually do in the evening. Dotty put him on my lap, started petting him, and not only did he stay, he let me pet him, too! We gave him a Goof Ball, and between that and being petted, he stayed on my lap for 1.5 hours! Hopefully it wasn't a one time thing.

Hi, luvparrots, Thank you for the idea! I had an idea, too. He loves his head / neck petted. If Dotty only pets him while he is on me/my headrest, maybe he'll learn that being on me is a good place. What do you think?

Hi, I've noticed something about Spencer. As long as he can chew the headrest on my wheelchair, he stays with me (on the headrest)!! Obviously, I can't let him destroy the headrest. Yesterday, I took him in the bedroom, and he stayed on there chewing it for a hour. We put a towel on it. I tried taking him in the bedroom (without Dotty) this afternoon and this evening, and he would not stay with me. I put one of his favorite toys on my lap thinking he'd play with that, but no Any idea how to keep him occupied on me or my chair? Treats work a little. Thanks,<br><br>Post edited by: oppie, at: 2009/03/24 05:58

Hey! What a week! Dotty has been putting her fingers around Spencer's neck, and he lets her! So we decided to actually try putting the harness on him. He let her put it on relatively easily! He chewed on it some, but while riding around the parking lot on my headrest, he wouldn't chew the harness! He stood up tall as if to say, "Look at me, I'm riding Dad's wheelchair!!!" He has one of those jukeboxes in his cage that plays a tune when the FID pushes the button. He's still not sure how to get it to play. This morning, he was trying to get it to play, and said, clear as day, "oh f**k"!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another thing we learned. Spencer doesn't dislike men in general. My best friend, Don, was over yesterday, and we had him step up on Don's hand, and he stayed on his arm without flying back to his cage. He still won't stay with me in the living room, and only sometime in the bedroom <br><br>Post edited by: oppie, at: 2009/03/21 20:09

Thank you, Chimaysmommy! Everything Birds sounds like a great place to buy a cage!

Hello, Most of the time, Spencer will sit on my headrest before he goes to bed. When I lay my head back, he hits my head with his beak! He never bites my head, just hits. I take as playing, but is he attacking me? When I lay my head back, it's below him. Thanks, Ralph
-
Hi, Chimaysmommy, Where did you get the cage? Ralph

Hi, I agree, it's a scam. In addition, I'm very weary about getting birds off of Craig's List. I tried to find an Eclectus on there, and I the ones I found either had never been seen by a vet, or, when it really came down to it, the people really didn't want to sell. Ralph

Hi, bandits_mom08, The light that we see is actually a combination of different colors. Each color has a different wavelength. Colors in the UV spectrum have wavelengths shorter than what we can see. Ralph

We are working with the harness with Spencer. We lay it over his neck and laugh and laugh. The first time we laid it on him, he immediately started making the noise that he makes when he doesn't want to do something and tried to get it off. We started laughing, and he stopped trying to get it off and making that noise! Now when we put it over him, he only makes that noise for a few seconds (we still laugh)! Today we put the wing hole over his head, and it went very well B) Ralph

Thanks for the info and advice! We took him into the bedroom last night. At first, he wouldn't stay with me, kept flying on to Dotty (she was lying on the bed). After a while, I asked Dotty to sit up, and he flew to me! He stayed on my headrest for 1.5 hours, then I took him to his sleep carrier, and he went to bed  Maybe there's hope yet!!! Ralph

Hello, I'm having a problem with Spencer. He won't stay with me I understand him wanting to be on his cage, it's his safe spot. But yet, he will fly to Dotty in the living room. He has never flown to be in there. Whenever he flies to Dotty, she immediately has me come and get him. If we are in the living room, he'll fly right back to his cage. We have a routine where at 8:00 or 8:30 PM we take him to the bedroom and he sits on the headrest of my wheelchair. This is wonderful, as he is with me. He has stayed there 1.5 hours before. Lately, he has been flying to Dotty Tonight, I had Dotty bring him in the bedroom (he'll fly to his cage if I take him), give him to me, then leave us in there with the door cracked (it won't close because of our cable). He stayed on my headrest for about 10 minutes. then flew to the door. I stayed in there for 20 minutes hoping he'd fly back to me, but he didn't I just came out, and Dotty got him down and put him to bed. When he's on his cage, I hold food for him and talk to him a lot. Dotty thinks this behavior comes from the fact that he was handled by mostly women at The Bird Shoppe, where we got him. Can I win him over, or does Dotty have a new bird? Before I got him, someone on here told me that Greys can be one person birds, but that's not to say others can't handle them. Thanks, Ralph

Hi, Reap76, Congratulations on getting your Grey! Is it a Timneh or a Congo (Timneh's have a very faded maroon tail, and Congo's have a bright red tail)? Have you picked out a name? Spencer, my Grey, has been home for about a month now, and he (or she) is still getting settled in. Just go at his (her) pace. Enjoy your Grey! Ralph

Hi, LindaMary, That's not it, but it looks wonderful! I think I'll try it. Thank you I'm still open to suggestions! Ralph

Hi! Over a year ago, we bought a toy for Poco that she loved from Kings Cages. It was a half of a coconut that hung vertically (with the opening on the side), and had stuff like some kind of grass, paper, wood, and maybe leather strips inside. Yesterday, I went to Kings Cages' web site, and they don't have it anymore. I think Spencer would love it, but can't find it Drs. Foster and Smith don't have it, a few other sites I've tried didn't have it. Do any of you remember it? I can't even find anything like it. If you know where I can find it, or something similar, please let me know! Thanks, Ralph

Hi, This isn't an avian vet? Ralph
-
Hi, Austin, Some parrots need to be near at least one wall for security. Maybe she's nervous being near the center of the room. Ralph

Hey! Spencer and I are slowly getting closer, and he let me do something that he hasn't 'till now! When he is sitting in the doorway of his cage, he'll go to the back of it when I extend my hand to him. Today, I was a little farther from the cage and extended my hand to him, and he stayed there!!!!!!!! I even touched his beak! He even took my finger into his beak without biting it!!!! Usually, when my finger gets close to his beak while holding him, I get bit! His cage is still his safe spot, but he's settling in! Ralph

Hi, Rissa, We put Spencer, our Grey and Lindsay, our Quaker, in their carriers in our bedroom. We have no problems, they are in a dark, quite room, and we can watch TV in the living room. Ralph<br><br>Post edited by: oppie, at: 2009/02/14 06:05

Hi, Meadsy, Congratulations on getting a TAG!! My TAG just came home January 14, so he's still getting settled in. Spencer doesn't make many noises yet, so I bet you get a kick out of when Fagan whistles! Ralph
