We took Cooper out of the cage and put him up on top the first time. It has a slide tray up there too so we can lay paper on it for easy clean up. This was before he was stepping up so it was difficult. He had toys up there and once up there he had fun playing with his toys and he stayed up there awhile and went back in on his own after a few hours. We thought that would do it and the next couple days we left the cage door open but he did not come out:( Then I figured something out. :silly: Since they tray was in there blocking the view he could not see the toys on the top waiting to be played with:ohmy: so we took the slide tray out and he spotted the toys right away (through the top bars) and up he was. That's all he needed was to be able to see his toys. He is in and out contstantly now. I don't know if you can put toys on top of your cage where he can see them or not but if you can maybe put some interesting things up there to get him curious. I dont really know the right or best way, just can share what we go through over here;)

Anyone know of a good credible bird santuary
BaxtersMom replied to BaxtersMom's topic in Off-Topic Discussions
Thanks for all the replies. I will check into them. I am not expecting anything to happen to me in the next 30 or 40 years but want to "make arrangements" so to speak incase anything does. Thanks again. -
I'm glad this question came up. I have only given them small amounts of cheese only on a couple occassions and found they loved it too! Now I can feed more often now that I know how much is ok. My flock will be happy!

I am glad he will stay playful cuz that is so cute. I do know the smell that Pat is talking about. My eclectus has that smell, kind of smells like musky spices:ohmy: I don't mind it but some people might but only time I smell it is when he is real close to me.. And Cooper has it too. When he steps up and he is on our hand all the sudden I will get a wiff of it. He has a stronger odor than my eclectus does. Does that mean he is hitting puberty? Is that when the odor starts? I can believe they are prone to obesity too. I think Cooper is so big and his chest is soooo wide! When we got his feathers clipped I asked the girl about it too and she said he wasn't obese but he is kind of chunky:laugh: I was just hoping that he would stay playful and curious like he is. I thought maybe when he matured more that would all stop but sounds like this is how they are. Yeah! It's amazing to me how each bird I have is so different from each other. I love the differences in them all.

I know this is kind of a wierd question and I'm kind of embarrassed to ask but will anyway:whistle: I was wondering if anyone knew of a legitimate & credible bird santuary in the US? Reason I am asking is that if I died unexpectedly, I do not have anyone I could really rely on or trust to take in my birds and feel like they would be taken care of properly. I have good part of my life insurance set up to help the Humane Society here in metro Detroit but I would like to check into a bird santuary instead and hope that I could give to a birds santuary instead, knowing that they could live their lives out in peace without ever being rehomed again. I just want to have peace of mind that if I died a santuary could profit and continue helping birds and giving my flock a wonderful home for the rest of their days too so I am looking for a long term one that won't shut down..Anyone have any ideas? I have checked the internet but havent found anything that looked that credible. I am in Michigan but think anywhere in the US would be ok. Thanks in advance.

Cooper is a funny character.  I have been wondering about their personalities though. He is so playful and curious now. Do you think that is because he is young or are they like that naturally? He is stepping up now and so we are able to take him to another room, lay a blanket down and we have a lot of colored and different shaped blocks that he loves to toss around (and eat) and he has a blast doing that. I think he likes the color orange. That's the color he grabs most often. He hangs upside down from his toys and makes all kinds of racket with the bells and toys.He doesn't make much noise or talk much at all but I know it's still early on. He has never gotten loud at all (yet) He will talk every time we turn something on with a motor like the vaccuum, blender, mixer, etc. And he also laughs hysterically, like side splitting laugther when we vaccume, mix, etc. It cracks us up. Every great now and then when we say hello to him he will answer back.I was wondering if he talks when we have something turned on cuz he's nervous or scared although his body language does not show any fear but it's the only time he says any words. Is he being such an active boy cuz he's young or are they just really active and comical birds. I am hoping he will not outgrow this stage cuz it looks like he has so much fun. He still does not like us to pet him and when we try to he makes a little crying noise. He used to make the crying noise when we wanted him to step up but now that he's learning that he doesn't do it then anymore. I would love to hear more about amazon personalities from anyone who has one. You really can't get a hole lot of the internet or books, I want to hear first hand experience if I can.

{Feel-good-0002006E} You conure sounds just like mine. He thinks he is the toughest bird around town. I guess since he is smaller he thinks that he has to act tough to get his way and squaks right in their faces. It is so funny to watch him trying to get his bluff in.
-
That is so nice of you to offer. I bet there are many birds out there that are in need of a place to say during these awful fires. Karma to you for offering.
-
That is so neat. I think it's great he is home and great that he chose you. See how smart he is? He knew exactly what to do with you to find a home:laugh: Tell your mom that amazons are great birds, too. Perhaps she should go back and get it;) Cooper is really a character and doing so well. He is now stepping up when we ask (most of the time) He is such a clown and so active. Always looking for something new to do and he is interested in everything!! Maybe it's because he is still young, about 1 1/2 yrs. My others all came to me as adults and this is the youngest bird I have gotten and he acts just like a child. It is soooo funny. Does your mom live close by? Has she had bird before or does she have one now? Does she enjoy birds like you do?
-
Ok, the toy room is here, but where are all the toys? {Characters-0002005F} I can't see them anywhere?
-
Oh he is adorable and looks like he is quite comfortable in his new home and already a shoulder bird, too:laugh: This is so exciting. How did he react at the pet store when it was time to go? Do you think he knew what was going on?
-
That is so good. He's on your shoulder already, too? Even better. I'm glad I was able to help out on the stepping up thing:) and that it worked for you too. My husband had a break through the day before yesterday with Cooper. He bought him a one of those rope perches and put in on the inside of the cage where the door is at so when the door is open he can just sit on that rope perch and look out and he does. Then later my husband went up to him and said step up and he did it!! About half the time we ask him to step up he does it willingly now:) Gizmo will probably be stepping up on his own in just a few more days:) You and Gizmo seem to be making so many acomplishments:) ! And that is great news that he came back with a clean bill of health. I'm sure the diet you feed him will get all his levels back up where they should be too. It's funny you said you made waffles for him. We just cooked up a batch of birdie pancakes a couple days ago with seeds and dried fruit in them. Everyone loved them except for Baxter. He is such a fussy guy but I love him anyway. So when will you be introducing Gizmo to the rest of your flock?
-
Oh those are great!!! I wish my grey would lay on his back like that. That is so sweet. Thanks for sharing.

{Communicate-0002011B} Oh, I am so so so happy for you and Tanner!!!! I am so glad he is coming home. Won't he be surprised?! You have such a great mom to have come up with this idea. They are talking snow this afternoon:( And snow for the next 2 days:( I'm so not ready for that.{Holidays-000200B2}

Hello and welcome to the forum. I really liked the slide show and Charlie is a good looking grey. You said the pet store said Charlie was a congo but the records said he was a timneh? Some of the difference are that a timney grey has a lighter bone colored beak, the Congos have a dark beak and brighter red tail feathers. Congos ususally get a bit larger than a timneh but don't think there is much if any difference in how they act and personalities. Congos usually cost a few hundred more than a timneh so I hope they charged you for the right one. In the picture show it looks like the beak was kind of light but hard to tell. Anyway, it sounds like you & Charlie have become the best of friends already and it shows in the pictures too. From reading your post I can tell you love him so much already. Thanks for sharing the slide show. That was pretty neat.

Hey Perch, just seen your instructions on how to shrink the photos. That is how I do it too but I have to stretch/skew down to 17 & 17.

Glad to hear Nismo is getting along good at the barber shop. Has he created more business for you cuz he's in there? I know I would go somewhere to get my hair cut if I knew there was a parrot inside. :woohoo: I do remember your post and there was one thing I forgot to mention. I don't know if you use a lot of chemicals on your customers hair but you might want to be careful if you do. Greys are real sensitive to chemicals/fumes and cleaning products and could make them really sick and could even kill them. Just wanted to make you aware of that if you weren't already. If you have any questions about that you could always ask in the "health room" Sounds like you guys are getting along real well. I don't remember if you said how long you have him though. Keep us posted.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I bet you are so excited about picking your new companion. Yes, please get some pics when you get the chance. We would love to see him. It's good that you get to go visit him/her often, too. Please keep us posted.

Welcome to the forum. I loved your introduction of you & Schroeder. That was a good one. It sounds like he has you trained pretty good. The picture of him is just priceless, too.
