1. Hi, In the UK it's not sunny all the time so we have UV lights for our greys (they have their own bulb and holder). How much time should they be exposed to it in a day? Thanks
2. Hi All, So, it's been a while since I have have posted an updated on Ice. Ice came home with us at the beginning of November. When we went to pick him up the lady who owned him couldnt get him to step up and had to stick her arm out cos he used to bite. I have been bitten several time by Ice and when he bites he means it!!! I spent a lot of time with him and getting him to trust me. So what's changed??? Well I can now touch him everywhere including his keel bone, beak, head etc. He can hang upside down from my hands and never been so close to an animal/bird. We both know we have a special relationship and he light's up when he sees me and says hello every morning. Right now he is sitting on an armrest waiting for a head scratch!! I love having him around and with us each day. I dedicate this post to Ice - I cant imagine my life without you in it! Thanks Nims

sharp claws

Hi, I use to file my greys nails but now I just go to the vet every 6 weeks to get them filed and it only costs me £6!!!
4. Judy is right, their weight can vary a lot. I have a CAG who is 10months old and she weighs in a 410g and Ice who is 4 weiging in at 555g. Thanks
5. Cute pic! He does it because he loves ya! Lucky you......I get the same thing with Ice and then he goes and tries to bring me up a present!! lol
6. Does he get plenty of attention in the home, my birds go loopy if they dont get any attention. Have to tried talking to your bird softly or reading to him? Other questions would be that is she/he eating and playing well. Does the poop look OK? Last but not least......have you tried ignoring the behaviour as she/he may be attention seeking?

Post edited by: nims, at: 2009/01/05 23:43
7. Does your husband spend a lot of time in the presence of Koko? Seems strange that he calls for him but wont let him pet him.
8. Is your baby fully weaned? At four months he/she should be but some take longer to wean than others. How long have you had your grey? Have you made any changes since yesterday around your bird, nail polish, new furniture, new clothes etc?
9. Ice has a new favourite.......he now loves peanut butter on toast!!!
10. Ice does this when we wants attention. Also he use to tip his bowls onto the floor! I got him crock lock bowls so he couldnt tip the bowls........and he has now stopped throwing his food.
11. This is an interesting topic. I have now beeb married for two years and plan to start a family in a couple of years. I have given this a lot of thought and what impact it would have on my flock as I have two greys. I have had Ice for 4 months and Indy for 6months and I cannot imagine my life without them. I think Judy has given you some sound advice. Please think carefully before making this decision and I can understand that a newborn will take up a lot of time. I guess you have to give it some more thought and I wish you all the best.
12. I agree......I dont want to do it either. I have chosen to leave it for now.
13. Talon, Ice's band is solid and the vet told me that he has to be put to sleep also tohavethe band removed.
14. Hi Talon, I have had Indy's band removed for 2 reasons. It was loose on her leg and was concerned that she was either going to get it caught or pick at it and swallow it. I got hers removed at the vets and she had a little bruise on her leg which disappeared after a week. I am thinking about getting Ice's removed now as its so worn away you cant see any of the information on it!!! As he is a big boy i think its a little snug. The vet has told me that if they were to remove it he would need to be put to sleep first........which I dont really want to do. My advice is to go talk to your vet and let them know of your concerns and let them tell you what the options are.
15. Hi, Ice is exhibiting mating behaviour nearly every other day and he only seems to do it when my hubby is not around. I only ever touch his head, face and neck area. At the moment I ignore the behaviour by putting him back on his perch/cage. Is there anything else I should be doing. I know that encouraging this sort of behaviour leads to further problems which I want to avoid. Does anyone else have/had this problem? All advice welcome:)

I have the same problem here in the UK. We dont get much sun here so my vet recommended avian lighting.

Injury

Hi All, Thanks for your responses. I spoke to the vet and told him what happened. I decribed the wound to him and he said it was a gash (flesh wound) and she will be fine in a week. She is eating and playing well. Panic over. I will place some rugs/mats near her stand in the future. Thanks all

Injury

I am very worried about indy. She is clipped and was her play stand and decided to "fly" off it. She landed quite hard on the floor and we have no carpet. There is no actual bleeding or broken skin but when I examined her closely she has a little red blotch next the keel bone towards the end of the keel bone. Is this a bruise or could it be something more serious like internal bleeding? Please help!
19. Good luck in finding a good home for your grey. Greys are not for everyone and I commend you for writing this on here. I am sure that you have tried to make this work and have chosen to find your grey a new home for your grey only because you have his best interest at heart.
20. Hi All, So me and the greys came back from our trip to London and the both Ice and Indy had a great time and my family loved having them around! Indy was pretty much the same but we saw a whole different side of Ice. He is much more gentle with me and loves being around me and sitting on my knee. He also laughs when other people laugh and its just toooo funny. He is even warming to my husband! It's amazing to see how far he has come just being in a different environment. Happy Holidays everyone!!
21. Hi there, I give my CAGs treats in the form of nuts and seed and as long as its in moderation you can give them some. When looking on the packet just make sure its safe for parrots/birds and you should be fine. I think what you are talking about are millet spray and they are fine for your birds. Hope this helps!
22. Most greys do that. Its nothing really to worry about but it does mean that you have to keep changing their water. I think they are trying to make soup!
23. I live in a duplex apartment but used to live in a semi-detached property and I have never had a problem with any of the neighbours. As Dave suggests they dont really squawk(and they shouldnt really) They do however scream when they are angry/scared. Greys are relatively quiet and as long as they are covered at a decent hour they should be OK.
24. Hmmmmmmmmmmm good question. I have ceramic straightners so I can use mine in the same room. However I do know that there are some straightners out ther which are teflon coated so that's a bad idea. I also dont use my hairdryer in the same room as them (im not sure about the fumes) If in doubt i say dont use them. Better to be safe than sorry!
