Hi, Just to let you know willow is a safe wood to give your parrots and is probably the most used wood in perches and toys. You will do Zahzu no harm by giving her some to chew on. Nims

Hi Sameera, Im sorry to hear about your little one. I would suggest taking Zahzu to the vet to just checked over (he maybe then be able to suggest something for the pain) I have read that willow bark has aspirin like properties so try and get hold of some of those for her to chew on as it may help a little. Cheers Nims

I forgot to add then coco is about to poop where you want him to use a trigger word like "go potty" or "go poop" when he is going. He will match the action to the phrase and you can then potty train him. Also you might see the signs of him wanting to poop but when you take him to his pooping area he might stop. Wait until he does it and then let play or wander to prevent accidents

Hi, Welcome to the forum, I think I can help with the poop thing! You need to see the signs of when coco poops. CAGS usually will squat down and shake their tail feathers before they poop. As soon as coco does this take your bird to an area you want coco to poop (i have a perch with a tray underneath it). Coco might be hesitant as you just stopped him when he was about To go but keep him there until he does his business (give him lots of praise when he poops). Keep doing this and coco will start to learn where he needs to go. Most CAGS will not poop in there cage (mine included. As soon as my CAG indy comes out of her cage in the morning I take her to the poop perch where she can do her business. This may take a few weeks but coco will get used to it but you must keep an eye on coco and watch out for the tell tell signs. Good luck! Nims

Post edited by: nims, at: 2008/08/13 21:45

Hi, I have a 6 month old CAG called Indy and last week one of her tail feathers was broken in the middle and fell off. When cleaning her cage this week I noticed another tail feather. She is not plucking or anything but I am wondering if she is starting to moult? Also she has a lot of flakes (dry skin?) a lot can anyone tell me why this is? I am currently bathing her every other day to help her? Thanks Nims

Hmmmmmmm interesting questions. Each person who owns a grey has a different routine of how, when and what they feed their greys. I feed my grey oatmeal in the morning with a little bit of honey, during the day time she has access to her pellets and in the evening she has fresh fruit and veggies (chillies, broccoli, carrots, pepper, watercress, banana, grape, peas etc. I know parrots are wasteres but I offer her a lot of fruit and veg at dinner and most of the time she doesnt finish it. some if the other members will be able to tell you what they feed their greys. Good luck Nims

hi, I would agree with lovemygreys on this one. Curiosity will always get the best of them! It may take a little time for them to come out but they will (when they are good and ready) Nicky might only be adjusting to the room or the cage if its new. Just be patient and keep and and with time he will come round. Try reading their body language also, my CAG indy will push my hand away with her beak and back away if she doesnt want to come out when i want her to. If she does want to come out she will perch herself near the cage door and will "step up" on command. Nims

Post edited by: nims, at: 2008/08/10 17:52

Hi, I have never been to the vets to have my greys nails trimmed as I do it myself. I would never clip/cut a greys nails but I suggest you file them down with a nail file. It is a two person job, one has to hold the grey and the other file. I to this once a month and no more bleeding fingers! I dont use any sandy/cement perches as they are bad for their feet. Instead get perches made from tree branches, i use willow. She does hate having them filed down but it has to be done. Hope this helps Good Luck Nims

Post edited by: nims, at: 2008/08/10 18:04

Hi I have a similar problem with my CAG Indy. She loves myself and my husband (though she prefers mu husband to me!) She doesnt like any of my friends or members of my family. Yes the treats are a good way for your boyfriend to get close however try to spend as much time together as possibe and in the evening when Malibu is a little sleepy get your boyfriend to try and pet Malibu. You will have to go slow get him to put his finger near his beak, let malibu beak him. If malibu is gentle he should let him stroke his beak and from there work your way to head scratches You really have take things slow on his terms. Hope this helps. Nims

Yes i think this is a grey thing! My CAG indy does it a lot. I think she is tryin to make a soup!

Hi, I have not tried harrisons but have you to tried grinding/crushing the pellets finely then adding the warm water? I did this with my grey when she stopped eating her pellets completely and would only eat seeds. Nims

Hi, Welcome to the forum, you will find it very useful. You grey is in a new environment with a new owner so don't worry about the hesitation at all. I am sure you and malibu will become fast friends. All it takes is a bit of time just make sure you interact with Malibu both inside the cage and out. I would keep the training sessions short 5-10 mins each and always end it on a positive note with lots of praise. Hope this helps:) Nims

Hi, My grey fell off her perch and hit her head also but hers was more of a small gash instead of a cut. I cleaned the wound with some saline solution and it healed up fine within a week. The aloe also sounds good but saline was all i had at the time. I would also file odie's nails so they are not sharp just incase she/he wants a scratch the area. Hope this helps! Nims

Hi, My grey gobbles breakfast which is oatmeal and pick at her dinner (fresh fruit and veg) so a little bit of both!
-
Hi, Thanks for the reply. She is out at the moment munching on some cauliflour. She's having a good go at it too I think she's a bit of a foodie like me Nims

Hi All, I have a question for some of you experts. My CAG Indy is nearly 6months old and at 7pm she has her dinner which consists of fresh fruit and veg. After dinner put her back into her cage so she can play with her toys but she starts eating her pellets (kaytee rainbow)which she has access to all day. I only put her back when she stops eating her veg and never before. Is this normal or am i not feeding her enough? Thanks Nims

Hi, When I first got my CAG at 12 weeks she was already weaned but you can try oatmeal in some hot water as CAG love something warm in their little bellies. You can add stuff to the oatmeal I finely crush pellets into mine as its a good way of getting them to get used to the taste (if they can taste?!) You are doing the right thing though so keep offering the food to them. Hope this helps! Nims

Hi, I found this site that might help http://www.mdvaden.com/bird_page.shtml Personnally I use willow and my CAG loves it! Nims

Hi, I use pumpkin seed instead of sunflower seeds. Nims

Hi, Hmmmmmmmmm good question! I also have tried looking for herbs and spices suitable for greys. My pet shop sells really good parrot treats made from organic ingredients one had fenugreek in it! My avian vet told me that onion and garlic are a no no so I suggest you keep away from those. They seem to love hot chillies (they like the sensation)try giving them fresh chillies or in the dried/crushed form. I wouldnt suggest chilli powder other things may have been added to make the powder that may not be suitable. Hope this helps Nims

Hi, How old is your grey and what are you feeding him? Nims

Hi Jamie, Welcome to the forum (im new too!) Sounds like you and Leonidas are going through the same journey as me and Indy did. Leonidas will learn to trust (its something you have to build on) you in time and you wil then be able to cuddle you parrot. Just make sure you spend plenty of time together in and outside the cage and you should be fine. Nims
