lol, Well I'm having a patio built this summer, that is something I guess I can look forward to. I guess I will need to invest in some air cleaners.. With allergies the way they are these days.. I need them anyway.

Hi there, I just adopted my grey May 10th. I stumbled across her in a pet store where she was surrendered. Sammie definitely came with baggage but she did the same and stepped up for me, let me in her cage, let me give her scratches, etc. I dont know if this is what is called the honeymoon period or what, but she has had her moods and issues which are all discussed in this forum if you would like to check it out. I have found ways around them with the help of this forum which is a great place with lots of grey owners who will help you out with which ever way you choose. I'm so glad I adopted Sammie rather than getting a baby. She is wonderful even with her issues. We are still getting to know each other and she is doing great with the kids. Good luck

Mine doesn't do it all the time either, and I just adopted her on the 10th of May and thought the same as you. Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope we are right.

I'm by far no expert but I do know they can hurt their feathers when they go to the floor with clipped wings. My Sammie has done it on more than one occasion but I think its because she didn't "fledge" (I think that's what it's called)another words she never got to fly and she has bad balance. Sammie will eventually pull out the feather that was damaged. She is missing most of her tail feathers and a few wing feathers from doing this. I basically lowered her cage and removed her playstand from the top of her cage. I even close her cage door so she can't sit on the door. I built her a playstand I can put on the floor or on my desk. Less distance to fall or fly to the floor is my way of thinking.

Hi, I was on here earlier today and I saw where someone said their grey was trembling and something else was wrong. I don't know which post it is now but I have a question. Sammie trembles, I thought it was because she was nervous but now i'm worried. What kind of disease do they have when they tremble? I hope I dont sound like a hypochondriac, lol..

Mary, lol.. They are little stinkers aren't they. Thanks for the koodo's.. .

LOL, yes I have to admit it I love my house smelling clean and fresh, what can I say.. I was so distraught when I thought I was only going to be smelling vinegar  I gave away my smell good candles, the pinesol, Mr. Clean, plug-in's etc.. lol. I was having withdrawals  the green works is much better than vinegar!! I'm right there with you Mary!! Updates on the baths.. She wasn't doing to hot with the bath's I really believe someone torchered her with a water bottle!! Today it was really nice outside and the kids were out playing in the water, I was cleaning Sammie's cage.. It gave me an idea!! I took Sammie outside in her cage, I put the water hose on mist and the kids let me spray them next to Sammie's cage. Before Sammie new it she was getting a bath. She didn't freak out like she normally does and I believe she actually liked it. She looks so much better, I'm sure she feels better too!

Post edited by: madisimmons, at: 2008/05/27 05:01

Mary, I'm still using vinegar and water on Sammie's cage but I did get some of the clorox 'green works'.. I really like it.. It doesn't have a strong smell and it cleans!!

Update on Sammie......... Sammie is doing really good going in her cage. The trick is all in the planning. I learned to get her in with a peanut keeping her mouth busy, but I haven't had to use that approach the past few days.. It's such a relief, not having to wonder how I am going to get her in without her flying to the floor, hurting her feathers, and running around the house. it's a miracles, They never cease to happen, thank goodness..

Post edited by: madisimmons, at: 2008/05/27 05:07

I made a perch for the bathroom and a playstand this weekend.. It was really easy and actually fun, pretty much like putting a puzzle together.. $10 for the pvc cutter (could borrow one), $5.00 for the pvc, $3.00 for the caps, and $6.00 on vet wrap.. Sammie loves it! Here is the playstand (I added some toys) Post edited by: madisimmons, at: 2008/05/27 04:26 Post edited by: madisimmons, at: 2008/05/27 04:29

Post edited by: madisimmons, at: 2008/05/27 04:30

Nychsa wrote: So I should be doing this with my newly adopted Grey as well.. when she goes to bite?? I thought I was suppose to ignore the behavior so she wouldn't think of it as a game or that she got me??

I got him with a peanut last night. I am immediately took her away from the cage so she couldn't climb up and be all territoriall. We played and talked to Sammie while she ate grapes and nuts and did her deed on my couch, lol... the woes of poop.. Anyway.. when it was time to put her back in I got her to step up for a peanut.. she really likes those.. It was in her mouth and she wasn't letting go of it to grab onto the cage. Worked out excellently.. Now if we can keep this up it will be great!!

I use the vinegar and water on Sammie's cage, but vinegar is kinda smelly to me to use on other stuff.. I like the bleach idea... So the bleach smell will not harm the parrots if I mop the kitchen and she's in the living room. You would think that would be the worst thing to use.. Thanks so much
-
Mary, thanks... She will let me give her scratches and step up for me as long as she is not 'ON top of' her cage.. Her attitude was a lot more submissive in the neutral room.. I guess I main issue is just when it's time to go in the cage she is a little hellion (however you spell it).. I think this neutral room thing and a treat will make it much easier from now on. Wish me luck, Kim

Mary, I'm so glad Sammy stepped up for you!! yeah!

Sammie flew off the cage tonight.. my nephew took her in the bedroom instead of sticking her straight in the cage.. she didnt have an attitude which was good. she actually didn't fight being put in the cage this time.. hope this is a good sign.. Keep your fingers crossed.

Good idea Mary, I will take her in my bedroom and shut the door.. heheh  She wont be climbing the cage for sure!! I will have to get that book.. Thanks, Kim

After all the horrible things about what cleaners can do to our Greys I have no idea what to clean with. I loved using Pinesold, Windex etc... and lighting lovely smelling candles, having a clean fresh smelling house. I don't have another cage so she cant leave the area and then air the house out, bring her back in.. Since we adopted Sammie I'm afraid to use anything.. Please tell me what you mop, dust, clean your windows, toilets, etc with. I don't want to hurt Sammie!!

Post edited by: madisimmons, at: 2008/05/21 23:36
