  1. Today another feather, this time a tail feather, she only has two tail feathers left. Could this be from needing a bath or something worse. I noticed when giving her neck scritches the feathers seem pretty dense in some places. Any thoughts???
  2. I hope this is from just needing a bath, she seems really happy. Absolutely loves to step up and get scritches.. What should I do if she doesnt quit after the bath?
  3. Sammy pulled a tail feather out today. I hope it's because she is just needing a bath. I am going to give her a bath tomorrow. Mist with cold water anyway. I read somewhere on here where people mist with straight aloe vera??
  4. Thanks I will keep an eye out for more. When it is the 'feathers time to go' do they pull those out or do they just fall out. I will check back in later for more helpful knowlege.. Thanks for everyone who has commented. I am off to Wal-Mart for some aloe vera juice.
  5. What should I do for the first bath. I am pretty sure Sammy hasn't had a bath in the past month and a half at the pet store I found her in. The man said he just misted them with water about once a week. All suggestions welcomed.
  6. Sammy is doing good her first morning in her new home. Today, however, I did notice a feather at the bottom of the cage. I know this can not be a good thing. What should I do?
  7. Thanks everyone, Sammy is doing good today, however, I did notice a feather at the bottom of the cage. I know this is not a good thing. What should I do?
  8. Sammy hasn't talked for me yet tonight but she has whistled that whistle, you know the sexy one, lol.
  9. I got my beautiful CAG and put her picture on my profile. I havent' figured out how to do the photo album yet. I brought her home put her on her perch, she stepped up for me, loves scritches on the head. Sammy (They said it was girl but no DNA test) stepped up for my daughter, my nephew, and my curious neighbor. I guess she was socialized very well. I am so excited!! Question do any of your birds follow you around. I went outside on the front porch twice and she jumped off her cage. I come back in and she steps up for me and I put her back and she is fine. I feel like she is trying to follow me? One more question. Sammy will take turns with her feet ever so often extending her legs and it looks like she is stretching them out. Is this normal? Okay, just one more question.. What time should bedtime be? I'm a night owl. Thanks everyone for your responses

  12. Thanks pat for your input. I will see what I can do. He wouldn't let me put a deposit up to hold her for two weeks. He said he's had bad experiences doing that. I will get her as long as nobody snatches her up before I can get to her.

  14. The man who is taking care of the CAG I am thinking of adopting told me that she doesn't like to go to the bathroom in her cage, he said none of them do. The CAG, I guess she goes while on the side of the cage and it ends up in the floor. Is this normal? Should I put her between the kitchen and living room where there is tile?
  15. Where do you get the aloe vera spritz at?
  16. Take it from experience, letting a dog out around the bird is a bad idea. I had a Quaker and my nephew without thinking let my miniature dachshund in the house. In less time than you could scream stop, my dachshund jumped on the perch, knocked my quaker off the perch to the floor, grabbed him by the neck and our sweet sweet quaker is no longer with us. It was the most tragic thing I have experienced with an animal. I still get sick to my stomach thinking about the whole ordeal. It was very tragic but hopefully by posting this I can get people to think twice about letting birds around dogs/cats. It's a natural/animal instinct for the cats/dogs, a hard thing to stop just because you said so. It may not happen today or tomorrow, but it is an animal instinct. Please don't chance it.
  17. Hi, I'm sure this sounds like a silly question but where do you get the aloe vera spray?
  18. Hi, and thanks for the welcome. I have two kids 10 and 12 and a 10 month old boxer named Tuffy. Tuffy is the sweetest dog I have ever met, I think if someone was attacking he would probably be licking thier feet while they were doing it. Not a mean bone is his body. I have been researching African Greys online for about a month or so, I am just intrigued with them, they are so beautiful and smart. The kids and I went to a pet store Yesterday to just mess around and kill some time. I had no idea they had exotic birds much less African Grey's. While we were there I talked to the man who cared for them, and he told me about one he got about a month ago. She is 1 1/2, her owner died about a month ago (a female). The guy who is taking care of her said she hasn't talked much. He said the lady may have not worked with her very much. Do all African Grey's talk a lot? From what I've read I haven't heard of any not talking. I thought this may be because she is depressed or maybe she didn't want to talk around other people, or she wasn't worked with very much. She has a few tail feathers missing, the care taker said he thinks the cage she was in was to small and the bird would hit her tail feathers on the cage. My first thought was feather picking but it doesn't look to bad. You know you really can't trust someone who is trying to sell birds in a pet store, I can't anyway. He also told me the bird has never bitten him which to me is a good sign. She stepped up for me from inside her cage and stepped up for my nephew, but got a little nippy with me after about 30 minutes. She let me pet her on the head, but a little weary of course, at the end I thought she was going to get me. I'm sure it has something to do with people coming in all day long poking at them through the cages. The man told me he thinks once she is back in a good home that she will be just fine. I have a really nice cage and toys, etc already to make a bird a wonderful home. How much is too much to pay for 'adopting' an African Grey? Should I get a guarantee with it? It is a pet store???? Should it be vet checked first? She cost $600, and I am just leary about paying so much money and not getting a guarantee that she is at least well. I would be heart broke to get attached and have something seriously wrong with her. I just lost a quaker, tragically, not long ago. The African Grey is a little on the thin side, or weighs less than the 8 month old babies they have. I assume she is fine or the man wouldn't have her right there with all his other birds. I figure it has something to do with her owner dying and being in a different environment. If I sound like I am rambling, so sorry, I am thinking as I type. If she is still there in two weeks I will get her, if not, it must not have been meant to be. 21. Hi everyone, I'm planning on adopting an African Grey in two weeks. She is suppose to about a year and a half old and her owner died about a month ago. I have never owned an African Grey before but have been reading like crazy. I decide to join the forum to get ready for the new addition to the forum and learn as much more as I can before she comes home.
