Thanks for your quick reply!! The guys were 'oh it's animal safe' I told them 'animal safe does not mean bird safe' haha.. I would die if it hurt Sammie!! Thanks again...

I don't think the smell goes away for a few days
-
I can still smell it, its not really strong, but maybe i should put her in my room, i didn't clean that carpet yet, and just keep the door closed.
-
I just bought a kirby vacuum/carpet cleaner and I moved the bird out in the garage while they were cleaning. The carpet cleaner is suppose to be animal safe, but we know how that goes. I've been running the attic fan with the doors open for about an hour and half. Do you think its safe to bring the bird in now?

Empress wrote: I feel your pain Empress, lol.. but the greenworks is not anymore expensive than the other cleaners and its made with stuff like coconut, corn and other stuff I cant think of right now. But it smells clean, add that with an air purifier and your ready to go. What having a grey has made me realize is that we breathe so many chemicals, chemicals that will actually kill a bird. In reality I think it's better for me and my kids not to have all the smelly stuff anymore. I rather have something that is made with coconut than something I can't pronounce that is harmful to our health, just a thought. It might not knock us over and kill us immediately, but it definitely cant be good for us. Greenworks should pay me for endorsing their product, lol..

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Empress, I just cleaned out my cleaning supplies, ie. anything with amonia, candles, windex, pine-sol, plug-ins, carpet fresh, incense, etc. Mary was telling you about Teflon.. also beware, I heard avacado's and chocolate are a big no-no's..

BMustee wrote: How long have you had Sammie? If he is still close to a year and a half he may still have some baby tail feathers...any of them have dark tips still? How about a leg band? Most bands will have the year of hatching and the state they were hatched in on them. I got her May 10th and she is missing like all of her tail feathers but one. The guy I got her from said the people who surrendered her had sammie in a cage that was too small and that's why they are missing. She had 3 when we came home and pulled two out. I think they were bothering her. The vet said she had stress lines on the ones she did have. No leg band either.

How wonderful Skuffy!! 8 yrs and counting... They told me my Sammie was a about a year and a half old when I got her, but I don't think so. Her eyes are a whitish yellow color which means she has reached at least what 5 yrs old or puberty unless I'm mistaken. It doesn't really matter to me, but it makes me mad  they lied about it!! ugh!! which means I can't believe anything they told me.

I think I have something similar or maybe even the same that I bought at dollar general. I dont know how it cleans after you have washed it?? I couldn't find any literature how it cleans without chemicals. I do love using it for everything though, it's in my left hand and greenworks in my right. p.s. everything but the cage, haha

I have been thinking of getting one for awhile.. The kids and I have pretty bad allergies: mold, pollen, dust, animal dander, you name it!! I didn't think about being allergic to the birds dander when I got her, but so far all is good!

I was just wondering how old everyone's birds are, who has the oldest one and if there are any tell tell signs regarding age. I know about them having completely black eyes when they are small, but what about when they get older. Thanks, Kim

You can also change the way you hold your arm and make him stay on your fingers. Keep telling him to step up to the other hand until you get him to stay on your fingers. Keep your hand elevated higher thank your elbow almost completely vertical. You can face the bird towards you and hold her feet still with your thumb as well. (tip from the vet "This also makes them feel more stable/balanced") Good luck

Spooky hurst, I'm glad you pointed that out. Sammie's owner died of a heart attack and then her kids took the bird, who then put sammie in a small cage and messed up her feathers and made her paranoid of water bottles, ultimately surrendering her to a pet store, so the story goes. Sammies original owner however socialized her very well. She stepped right up for me and let me in her cage and give her scratches, along with both of my kids from the get go...

Good! I'm aware of her doing it now more than ever in the past few days. I guess it's a sign she is finally getting relaxed in her new home.
