Yeah, maybe I could talk to the owner and see what she says. Sadly, I don't think she cares so much about the good home as she does about the money she thinks she can get.
-
Okay, so there is a CAG at work on consignment. He is 13 years old and had plucked some of his neck feathers. He is a total sweetheart. I've avoided paying to much attention to him as I don't want to get attached but it turns out that he is getting attached to me. He always wants to come to me. When I walk by he says "come here" and steps up if I let him. He then doesn't want to get down. He'll also let me swing him upside down and tickle under his wing. So now I really want to rescue him but I can't afford him. Do I ignore him and let other people take care of him for the most part? I don't want him to feel abandoned twice... once by his previous owner and then by me. Am I over thinking it?

I'd bet money that's a little girl! Looks just like mine.

Good ideas! I just got a bottle of palm oil and have been wondering how to use it and how much to give them. I tried mixing it with their seed but it didn't mix too well.

I have a Tag and a Senegal. I'm afraid I won't be much help because I love them both and they are both amazing birds in their own way. I'll answer the questions you have but keep in mind that it may not hold true for every Senegal or Tag. 1. My Senegal needs more attention. He demands it. If I'm paying attention to Willow, my Tag, he gets mad and jealous. He will sometimes be mean about it to. He'll throw little birdy temper tantrums or try to scare Willow off of me. 2. They both call out. Willow is very chatty and wants to practice "talking" all of the time. Pippin is fairly quiet unless he is not getting his way. I'd say they are about equal on noise. They have the same contact call that they use to get my attention and it is a high pitched irritating noise... Willow learned it from Pippin so I guess his is worse. 3. I can't answer this question. Pippin is a year old and Willow is only 7 months old so I don't know yet. Pippin has gone through more nippy stages though. 4. Again, yes. Willow loves to chatter. She's not really loud... she just likes to make noise. She does have a few high pitched chirps that can be painful if you're too close, but for the most part her noises aren't bothersome. 5. They can both be nippy as can any bird. I think they will all go through periods of nippiness. So far though, Pippin has been the more nippy of the two... he doesn't bite to hurt but he does use his beak more than she does to communicate. He doesn't really nip now, but when we brought him home he was quite nippy. In short, Pippin is referred to as our lovable pain in the ass. He has a lot of personality and a stubborn streak! So far, he has more personality and is more fun than Willow but she has not yet come out of her shell. If you have any other questions about the two, I'll be happy to answer them and I hope this helped.<br><br>Post edited by: Pchela, at: 2009/01/27 06:30

He is such a beautiful Grey! I mean, they're all beautiful, but he is a particularly handsome fellow.

Yay! I'm so glad you decided to wait! I know the waiting is difficult, but trust me, it will be worth the wait! My baby timneh was born in May and I put a deposit on her shortly after that. I had to wait until September to bring her home but she is healthy and happy and loves me! Good luck to you!
-
The baby will most likely not be weaned by that time unless it was force weaned which is not good for the bird. I know it's difficult to wait, but it really is best for the bird and your relationship with the bird to let the breeder naturally wean the bird!
-
Gorgeous bird! I need to get some new photos of my Timneh posted!

Here's the story on bonding and hand feeding. A parrot in the wild will be fed by it's parents. When it is ready, it stops accepting feedings from mom and dad and breaks away from the family in order to find a group of juveniles to hang out with and eventually will find a mate. So, a baby bird will often NOT bond with the hand feeder as that person is viewed as the parent whom the bird would naturally break away from in the wild. Make sense? Also, I have been training for the past 2 months at my job on hand feeding baby birds. It is not difficult to actually feed the birds, but there are many, many risks involved. The formula can be too hot and burn the crop. It can be too cold and cause an infection in the crop. You can easily push the formula into the wrong pipe and aspirate the bird. If that happens, there's nothing you can do but hold your baby bird while it drowns in your arms. So, I'd say, let the breeder hand feed and then take the baby home! It will work out much better for you!

Oh! Excellent idea She! You're right... it's difficult to gauge whether something might be slightly more crooked... photos is a great idea and will be an excellent record for the birdie vet. Thanks!
-
Okay, so... I think I'll keep an eye on her and see if the crookedness becomes worse. If it does we'll go to the vet and see what can be done. I don't mind if she has a crooked beak... makes her unique and cute, but I don't want it to get worse so that it interferes with her eating. Thanks for all of the input! I appreciate it!
-
Well, she has only had her new birdie checkup when I got her. Everything was fine then (4 months ago) I wanted to get your opinions on her beak before taking her in because I suspect that I'm overreacting... but I don't want it to turn into scissor beak! Is that even possible?
-
In this photo you can see that her beak is fully closed but she has a gap. The other side has less of a gap but it is still there. She was not cooperative when I tried to take a photo from the front... this is the best I could do. You can kind of tell that her beak is just slightly crooked here. And this is when we first got her... about 4 months ago. To me, it looks like less of a gap but I could be wrong. I'll try to get a picture posted of it tonight. I think it was always slightly crooked but I only noticed it for sure recently... I don't know if it's getting worse or I noticed so now I'm obsessing. It doesn't interfere with her eating at all. It's only slightly crooked right now. I've got to go to a meeting but I'll post a photo of it later tonight!
-
Willow's beak is slightly crooked and when her beak is fully closed she has a gap... the top and bottom don't line up correctly. Should I be worried about scissor beak or do some Greys just have crooked beaks?

How many people have TAG's and How many have CAG's

Willow is a beautiful TAG. -
Hmmm... mine is also 7 months and she hasn't said anything yet! I'll have to tell her she has some competition and she better hurry up and talk!
-
Good! Thank you so much! I feel much better knowing that this has happened to others. I guess she'll just be scruffy looking for a while. :pinch:
-
My baby girl Willow is destroying her tail! She has broken half of her tail off. She only has feathers left on her left side of her tail. She didn't pluck them out... she must have been playing rough or something and broke them. Is this normal? Should I be worried?
-
I think it's an awesome photo and makes an excellent point!
-
Hmmm... maybe Charlies owner would just not notice if I snuck Charlie home... I could replace him with a baby cockatiel and just tell her he shrunk a bit. Think it would work?
-
Oh I wish Charlie could come home with me! He's been sold for about three months now but has only just weaned... she takes him home tomorrow. But we're going to have playdates I think. My little girl is doing great! She's such a sweetheart. Hasn't bit anybody yet and just wants to be with us. I love her!
-
I got a few of them making out as well!
