  1. That's awesome! Thanks for sharing. She sure looks like she enjoys flying.
  2. I love Kakapos! They are nocturnal, flightless parrots that weigh about 8 pounds! They are from New Zealand. They make a "booming" noise when they are looking for a mate. That was hilarious! Thanks for sharing!
  3. I am so sorry this has happened. Here is some information I followed when my Quaker escaped. I believe it helped me get him back. I talked to local bird stores and one had information on someone who had found him. Good luck! http://www.goodbirdinc.com/help-escape.html
  4. In reference to what Dan said about combining words. Brutus always hears, "You're a good boy" and "You're a nice boy", so he logically combined "good" and "nice" because (I guess) he thought it was a superior assessment of his quality. He says, " Brutus is a good nice" which I guess is better than either word by itself.
  5. Brutus speaks primarily in my husband's voice. So what word or words is YOUR grey perfecting?
  6. What a great story! It made me laugh out loud. It must have been hysterical to watch.
  7. Have had birds since 1986. I have never given one away. And yes, they do drive me a little crazy at times, but mostly they are reacting to my stress. I will tell you, however, that the good times and the laughter they elicit because of their antics, far out way temporary bad behaviors. I mean everyone has a bad day occasionally! I believe problematic behaviors are cleverness challenges and if you are smart and work with the birds' natural wants and desires you can bring about change. Like Dan says birds, like humans, have good and bad days. For example our newest parrot is a Panama Amazon who has one extremely loud and ear-piercing sound that he makes periodically. I believe it is an attention-getting sound, and yes, maybe he got someone to run over and yell at him for doing it before, and that got the desired attention, even if it was negative attention. My plan is to soundlessly walk out of the room if he screams and to shower him with attention when he say "words" which he does. Food is also a good motivator. My quaker can be loud at times, but I think it is a joyful noise where he is announcing his quakerness. Birds are the pets most like people where you will have squabbles, as well as, joyful episodes. I wouldn't change one thing about them or my experience with them.
  8. Congratulations on your new family member!
  9. A little time in the sunshine every day is really good for their health and well-being (in a cage of course)
  10. Wow! Great story! I am happy Aristotle has found such a conscientious owner. Aristotle is in good hands. Please keep us posted with his progress. I know you will have a wonderful life together.
  11. Brutus' phase of the day are sentences involving the word "yogurt" as in: Do you want some yogurt? or Yogurt is good isn't it? He seems to love to pronounce the word and dwells on the "g". It is funny what they get stuck on saying.
  12. Love hearing about Marcus the CAG.
  13. Brutus and the others do not stir until they hear Mama in the room. Brutus will usually say something like, "Wanna go outside" or What's your problem?
  14. So funny! They always surprise us with the fruit of their observations.
  15. 1) 4 Loves my husband but not as much as me. 2) 3 Loves visitors and loves to be around new people, but being touched is not allowed 3) 4 Loves new stuff! He really perks up when something new is introduced into his environment. 4) 4 Super cuddly 5) 2 Not very often, but when he is, I make him fly between rooms to burn off his energy. He loves to fly. 6) 4 Always playful and energetic. He loves to be alive and it is infectious. 7) 1 Never 8) 4 ALL the time! 9) His dialogue is conversational rather than loud. 10) 3 Yes, he loves to destroy things. Because of that, our furniture and some other things are covered with pillows and comforters.
  16. They have these screw on bowls that you can attach anywhere. Maybe that would help because it looks like a HUGE cage. The bowls have a horizontal flange that spans the bars, so you can put them any place in the cage.
  17. There are removable decals of bird silhouettes used for discouraging wild birds from running into windows. You could use those on the inside of your windows to help your bird to realize there is a solid surface. Here is a website: http://www.duncraft.com/index/page/category/category_id/227/category_chain/227/name/Window+Strike+Solutions/
  18. Look forward to more stories about your birds.
  19. Wow! With that cool tricked out play stand your birds have it made!
  20. We just moved and it went well. I do think explaining to Sully what is going to be happening is helpful. Not only did we move, but we drove across the country with a parrot in each car. I was worried how they would do in a car, but they both travelled like champs! Once in the new house it was very hectic with movers coming and going. When things settled down we let Brutus out to explore. He was not happy with our strange new house, so he hid in the darkened bedroom closet for most of the next couple of days. I think it took a month or more before he was back to being his goofy, joyful self. Good luck with the move. And remember, this too shall pass...
  21. Good stories! Great to hear all of your experiences, thanks!
  22. Pancho has been with us a few weeks. He is still very skittish and wary. I hope he settles in and begins to enjoy himself. I know it depends on the bird, but how long could it take? Months, years? Maybe never? Thanks
  23. It is pretty shocking when the grey makes that sound! But it also demonstrates how comfortable and free they must feel to be goofy like that.
  24. I hope he can take Lucy permanently at some point.
