Need to find a foster or permanent home for Simon
chezron replied to simonmimon's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
I hope your situation works out. -
This is a great post! My Grey has a particular interest in putting holes in upholstery and removing nail heads. His favorite target is unattended purses or luggage. Unfortunately, he has damaged unsuspecting and unattended visitor's purses. I feel terrible about this, and I guess I need to routinely explain the possible hazards associated with my pets. "Keep your carry-ons close to you at all times, and close the door behind you-post haste."

Pancho is settling in nicely. We brought Pancho's cage downstairs when we found out Pancho was negative for disease. Brutus, our African Grey, learned Pancho's name in one day. I think he feels a little threatened because he says, "Brutus and Pancho" several times, but, he ends with something he made up, which is "Brutus and Mama." He needn't worry, however, as Pancho clearly prefers my husband. We are not forcing anything with Pancho. He comes out of his cage when he is willing to step up. When I have trouble getting him back in the cage with my hands, he happily steps up on a stick, so this is nice. The big surprise is after years of a 100% seed diet he is eating practically everything I offer him. He has eaten: pomegranate seeds, apple, orange, english peas (not a favorite), mango, corn, chicken bone, salmon, bean burrito, and cheese. He takes food willingly and easily when he is hand fed, but still avoids his fresh food bowl. He ate the chicken bone like he had been eating them forever. He talks a little. He says, "Hello Pancho, Pancho, Hey Pancho, and my husband thinks he heard him try, "let's go outside" but, I dunno. This would be a new phrase for him, and if this is true, very exciting! We are encouraged by the amount of progress he has made in such a short time (1.5 weeks). He is still a little skittish when he hears unfamiliar noises, but who could blame him. He has played with a few toys which makes us very happy!

Hope you get better soon Robin!

Pancho has been with us since Friday, so, five days. We are waiting for Psittacosis test results before we combine the flock. His blood work looked good, except for a slightly elevated white blood cell count. The Vet attributed it to stress from getting blood drawn. He is eating well. He takes walnuts from our hands. He steps up at times, but I am not rushing it. Today he was much more vocal and said, "Hello Pancho" a bunch of times. We have rolled his cage outside for sun and he seems to relish it. We are also rolling out the other birds at the same time, so they can see each other from afar. He actually ate some fruit today, as well. Plus, today he played with a ball. I am impressed with how far he has come in such a short time. I do have a question, however; He does this slow head bobbing motion when he sees me. It reminds me of a baby bird when they are being fed. Sometimes he flattens out and flutters his wings. What does this all mean? He flirts with my husband. I guess it is flirting. He struts around fanning his tail and pinning his eyes. Yet, when my husband tried to get him to step up, Pancho bit him. I think, maybe, he needs to work up to physical contact? I would be interested in your opinions on our new addition to the family.

We need a Harley update!

We are bringing home Pancho this Friday. We have a visit with the vet in the afternoon. I have been visiting him for about two months. He is a very sweet Panama Amazon. He had an owner for the first six years of his life, but after that, he has been languishing in a pet store. I don't think people noticed him as he is underneath another cage. Plus, he is small and kinda scruffy. In spite of the lack of attention from other people, I see a diamond in the rough. It is my wish that he will blossom with good food, love, sunshine, and regular showers. I hope he learns how to fly and enjoys the experience. I hope he learns to love showers. And most of all, I hope he sings with abandon.

I am so happy for Cricket that you didn't give up on her, and she is able to grow and experience more. Good job Ray!

Advice needed: Lost Quaker Parrot La Mesa, CA on 06/10/2011
chezron replied to chezron's topic in Lost & Found Bird Room
GOOD NEWS! UNBELIEVABLE NEWS! A vet tech found him two days later and posted, as such, with local vets and bird stores. I visited one of the bird stores and they already knew about Jimpster's disappearance. I called the kind lady and went and picked Jimpster up. She was sorry to see him go as he is such a little cuddle bug! We are so happy to have him back--safe and sound! Thank you for your thoughts and advice. This is truly remarkable! I still find this extraordinary and the best thing to ever happen to us! -

Probably the most fantastic thing that has ever happened to us!

Advice needed: Lost Quaker Parrot La Mesa, CA on 06/10/2011 Jimpster suddenly flew out the garage door on Friday and he just kept flying. I was gone when it happened, and I know Jimpster has never done anything like this before. My husband is very upset, but I do not blame him as it could just as easily have happened to me. Larry spent hours outside calling him. He even put his cage outside to see if he would come back. He didn't. Larry never heard him or saw him after that. I have listed Jimpster missing in Craigslist. We have a good population of hawks in the neighborhood, and I am pretty sure they made a quick meal out of him. I am very upset because he was such a little love bug. He pretty much hung out on my or Larry's shoulder, preened our hair, or nibbled our ears. Is there anything else we can do?

Thanks for the advice and well wishes! I am posting a flyer around the neighborhood. I have posted on Craigslist and other missing pet web sites. I will keep you posted.

We ended up using a moving company, and just packing essentials in the cars. Get quotes from a number of companies because their prices vary. We got a good deal.

Congratulations on the new plumage!

What a clever little girl! -
Brutus says, "Momma" or he just learned from my husband, to call me by name, Sharon. As in, (bellowing from another room----Sharon...!) When I am not there he says, "Where's Momma?" He knows I am Momma, for sure!

You have lots of daylight hours during the weekdays which is great! I really think it is the quality of the time rather than the total time which is important. I hope your birds are flighted. Mine seem to enjoy flying and spending time with me more than anything. I really don't know anything about clicker training, but missing just Saturday is okay. It is also fun to take them out into the sunshine (in their cages) most days.

Our grey loves me primarily, but he also loves my husband. It IS possible to have a grey that is able to be handled by more than one person. You just need to expose the bird to more people. Take him places and invite people over to your house. Our grey loves when people come over! Perhaps you need to spend more time with the bird by yourself. Just talk to him, read to him, and give him treats. You do not need to handle him until he is comfortable. I really think that when people say their grey is a "one person" bird they are doing themselves and their bird a major disservice and are limiting the bird's life and experience. These birds are so much more than we give them credit for!

It is nice to know his little tummy is full and now he can grow even better.

Brutus says, Wanna go outside!"
