  4. Hi Cheryl & Welcome, Yo are correct that seeds from certain fruits are dangerous to our greys due to the toxins in them.Im sure Alex's diet was not a contributing factor to his death. Here is a link so you can read the pathology results on Alex's death...Alex died from either a stroke, heart attack, or a cardiac arrythmia caused by arteriosclerosis. http://birds.about.com/b/2007/10/19/pathology-results-for-alex-the-african-grey.htm
  5. If you dont have any previous history on your grey it is hard to know if he had any basic training or if he has been socialized well. The most important command a grey owner can teach their grey is the step up,i have included a link for you...Keep training session short no more than 10/15 minutes perhaps three times a day if you can.Always reward positive behaviour, even the smallest of achievments, never tell your grey off or react to bad behaviour.. http://exoticpets.about.com/od/behavior/f/birdstepup.htm As for biting, as hard as it may be never show any reaction this is just what your grey is looking for.If your grey is on you, which i know he doesnt step up at present, you can slightly wobble your hand & this throws them off balance, always follow up with a firm No.If he is on a playstand or perch etc.. A firm no & walk away from him for a few minutes,in time he will see that bad behaviour brings him no rewards.
  6. mandi

    That's great news Mandi.
  20. Well it could be that or something else, the main thing is that your going to see another vet, when will that be ? & for now your grey has had some antibiotics, lets hope whatever it is diagnoised as, that he makes a full recovery.Thank you for filling me in, & keep us posted.

    mandi

Hi Mandi, wow that was a long stay, so pleased you are back. How's buddy doing ?
  22. It may well be the puppy, it may be his way of getting your attention,Greys will often pluck to get their owners attention, but i would highly recommend a vet visit just to be safe.
  23. Here is a previous Thread on visual sexing which also has some good links... http://www.greyforums.net/forums/african-grey/8400-visual-sexing.html#22667 The only 100% guaranteed method is DNA sexing.
  24. There is always a reason behind the plucking & it can be so frustrating for owners because you have to find out what is causing it, before you can start to fix the problem.Has there been anything that has changed in your greys life recently which may have started him to pluck ?The list is endless but a few possibilities are; Frustration from long periods in his cage Lack of mental & physical stimulation Change of family circumstances/ environment Incorrect periods of light/darkness A poor diet, high in fatty foods Attention seeking. Have you taken him to an avian vet to rule out any medical reasons ? http://www.greyforums.net/forums/african-grey/47821-feather-plucking-and-red-palm-oil.html#47996 This one is for aloe vera, which you can spray your grey with... Many members recommend misting with aloe vera juice. http://www.greyforums.net/forums/african-grey/47707-aloe-vera.html#48819
  25. im sorry you have bad news, Do you mean Psittacosis, this disease has many different symptons,low-grade infections may show as eye problems.Depending on how far this has progressed you wont know until the vet has caried out the appropriate tests .Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in quickly. Please update with any news.fingers crossed for you.<br><br>Post edited by: lovemyGreys, at: 2008/04/03 20:21
