we went through 3 cages before I went to a SS and it looks as good as the day I got it 5 years ago.. def worth it even though they are pricey.

Thanks.. Yep I like to build stuff. Always wanting a project to do around the house. I like the look of the thatched roof, but it's not that durable.. I've had it about a year and it's already rotting. I'm going to replace it with a metal "key west" looking roof that should last longer than the cage!

never... I was a little worried about that too, but it's really small..too small for her to even climb on. she uses the ropes I have along with a perch hanging from the center. I usually take her out when I'm working in the yard and she just sits and sings to me.

screen is aluminum mesh from Home Depot.. like the stuff you'd use on a screen door. It's more to keep the mosquitos and wasps away from her when she's in it. I was about $100 worth of material NOT including the palapa roof.. That's actually an umbrella cover that I stapled onto sheething/roofing paper. wasn't that bad to build. Glad I'm not the only crazy one out there!

yes.. but I'm actually going to tear this one down because I made a smaller tiki style one for her... she never really used any part of it. She just sat on a branch up in the corner. Here's her new one and she LOVES it!

I have one too and I'm about to sell it.. Keywe is scared to death of it and it is too small.. It's not really meant for CAGs (construction is a little flemsy) Especially for the price.. ridiculous!

we've taken Keywe on out of state vacations and brought along a smaller travel cage and she loved it. we also have two kids.. 2 years old and 3 months old, and the older knows not to touch her. We keep a gate up in the "birdroom" doorway so that there aren't any accidents. Sydney LOVES to watch Keywe and Keywe doesn't seem to mind her, as long as I pay attention to her too! They can be jealous!

i used aluminum screen mesh on mine... Keeps the bees and wasps out pretty good..Heard one time that a guy had a grey and it was stung outside by a hornet and died! That has stuck in my head since.

painting a cage is just plain stupid and careless... Birds are way too sensitive to chemicals. Build a wooden cage and use galvanized wire... Lasts forever outside. I'm building a tiki hut as we speak for my Keywe. Pentagon shaped, about 4 feet in diameter. I'll post pics after completion. I had a regular cage that I kept outside and it lasted all of 4 months before it literally fell apart from the rust. I do live in FL though where it's really humid most of the year.

i used galvanized wire from Home Depot on my outdoor aviary, and it's been fine..had it for 2 years and so far no rust. I did wipe it down with vinegar to neutralize anything on it though. Keywe climbs on it now and then, but mostly sits on the branches I have in it. I also put a corregated roof over part of it for shade..

I try and hide my bites but my wife always knows and laughs at me... She always says I deserve it because the bird gets more attention than she does... Jealous wife!!!

So these are from just regular landscaping palm trees such as Queen Palms and Foxtail Palms, correct? I live in FL and have many palm trees, which all produce seeds... Are these ALL safe for them? I have Christmas Palms, Foxtails, Royals, and Arecas that all produce...

go with your heart... You never know what could happen though if you don't at least try it... If he doesn't react well, then bring him back home... Nobody knows exactly what will happen until you try it! You are doing it for your baby!

here's Keywe's area... she LOVES climbing, but also loves chewing on the blinds, and I have to keep a stool in there so when I leave I can get her down, which can be an issue at times... A dorito always works though!

kimkim... not sure if you have a prefilter on it or not, but it will make the regular filter last much longer... I don't think it comes with one, but you can get a piece of filter at home depot and cut it to fit... the regular filter doesn't really get dirty because of it... the cleaner has cut down the dander and feather output in keywe's room by 1000%!!! i have it drawing air away from the main opening into her room..seems to be the best location for it, right next to her cage. i think it helps her to sleep more soundly at night too because of the noise...she doesn't get as spooked over all the little things she might hear.

the neti pot or a sinus rinse with saline (bought at any walgreens, cvs, etc...) works wonders... I've been using that for a couple of years and you wouldn't believe what comes out. You may feel like you are drowning at first, but the key is to relax, hang your head over the sink, and open up your mouth and nose at the same time and squirt the water up and let it do it's work... It helps tremendously. Also, I just cleaned out the filter after about 2 weeks and I can't believe I haven't had it the whole time... It's amazing how much dander it catches...

I recently went down to south FL and ran across this bird store, The Golden Cockatoo...Great store! I live in the Tampa Bay area and we don't have ANY bird specialty stores anymore. Anyways... They have a line of food there called goldenfeast and you can buy it on line. I bought Keywe a bag of "bean supreme" and I heat it in water for 4 minutes in the micro, and then let it cool. She has gone nuts over it and I just had to order 3 more bags! Extremely healthy and easy to make... I mix some harrison's pellets in there too and she will eat the entire bowl.. I tried another flavor, South American preservation blend, and she's not too happy with that one, but bean supreme is definitely a winner!

We have a Kenmore from Sears... We paid around $100 for it, and we keep a pre-filter in front of the HEPA one to help it last longer. I clean the pre-filter out about once a week and it's amazing what it catches! The prefilter is black, and everytime I take it out, it's white. I have Keywe in our Florida/office room, 12x12 feet, and I've always had tons of white powder all over my desk, computer, etc... since I put this in here, it stays clean!

I have allergies too...I bought a really powerful air cleaner and put it next to her cage..problem solved.. It catches feathers and dander like you wouldn't believe, and it makes a good white noise, so I think she sleeps better.

I have a 1.5 and one on the way... It's how the children are raised to be around the grey... Keywe is used to Syd, and we are teaching Syd respect for animals, and especially ones with beaks!
