They make CPVC that is used for water for human consumption. That may be safer. It's a tannish yellow color, not white.

Keep this one going because I'm always trying to get ideas on things to build Keywe...Gotta keep them busy y'know!!!

Keywe is from Key West, Florida...

Thanks for all of the great comments... It was originally a garden for my wife who thought that you can actually grow vegetables in Florida. There's a very small window for that, but anyways... I cleaned all of the weeds out and added the upper half of it and enclosed it. That's why there's that lip around it. It's approx 8x8x7 feet tall. It ran me about $600 for all of the wood and supplies. Wish I could have used stainless steel, but the cost is unbelievable. She doesn't seem to climb on it anyways.

I finally got around to take some pictures of the playhouse I built for Keywe. I was hesitant at first about letting her in it after talking to the vet about the wiring that I used. I've been out with her and she doesn't seem to mess with it because of all of the things she has in there. I'm going to brush it down with vinegar to neutralize the metal just to be safe. Other than that, I take her out on warm days, which in Florida there are many and she LOVES it out there. She has picked up on all of the native bird sounds in our area and is now a master bird caller! Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome! Thanks. I'm trying to attach the pics so please be patient if it takes me a little bit. [file]

My wife is 8.5 months prego, and she's around ours every day. It's VERY rare to get a disease from a bird. Just don't eat the poo!!! Have your husband clean it the cage daily. I have one of those paper rollers that makes it EASY to keep the cage clean. Keywe does hang outside the cage A LOT, so I try and keep papers surrounding the cage, and I also stack them up, so all I have to do is peel up the top layer and it's done. Birds are not dirty in the wild...They just don't have the area to throw their stuff elsewhere when caged, so it looks worse than they really are.

I have this exact same cage and I bought it new for 499 plus tax...search the internet...you'll find it cheaper than 700 something. I have sand powder coat color and my Keywe LOVES it... It's a great cage and great size for her to play in.

I was looking somewhere on the internet and somebody had used that golfing net used at golfing ranges, and they said it worked great. It's not expensive, and would hold up to the weather. I would mainly use it to keep her off of the galvanized mesh. There are MANY toys and things for her to play on, so I doubt she'd even try to climb much on the netting. It's hard to walk in there because of the maze of ropes, pvc ladders, and everything else that I could think of that she'd like to play on. I'll have to post pics.

Thank you all for your replies...Christina-I read the links and one of them said that the larger the cage, the less likely they would chew on the cage. This is a very large aviary, and if I keep the play area in the middle and keep an eye on her, maybe it will work out. I'm still going to keep my eyes open for something else. Thanks again for your help.

New camera for Christmas...Here's some of my little girl...

Exactly what Jane08 said...I wasn't the "bird" person...my wife was. We got a grey for her, and guess who she took up with? Now I am the bird nut and all my friends think I've lost it but I don't really care... She's my little buddy!

So I built this 8x8x8 foot aviary for Keywe to play in outside...Has a pergola rooftop and is very fancy. I'd post pics but I don't have any at the moment. I spent about $700 in materials and ropes, pipes, a birdbath, etc... Went all out for her to play now and then, not a permanent residence. One problem though...I used rolled wire mesh that I bought at Home Depot, used about 250 square feet of it to cover all of the windows and roof, not realizing that it's galvanized and is toxic to birds. BIG MISTAKE! So I've looked up Stainless Steel wire mesh, and it's about $600-900 for what I need. I cannot do that, so I am looking for another solution to the problem. I cannot take the galvanized out because of the way I installed it, but am willing to build an "inner layer" of something that would be safe for her, but I cannot afford Stainless steel. Any suggestions??? Thanks.

I just went over to my grandmother's house tonight to pull out 3 huge bins of legos that I've had since childhood (I'm 34 now) just for Keywe! I can't wait to build her the ultimate toy! Great idea! Thanks.

What "she" said...Don't do anything that will get you in trouble. There are authorities out there that can handle this. You should go there like you are interested in her business and take many pictures or something to document the conditions the animals are in. Say you want to take pics to show your husband or something. Get creative and be smart about it. Trust me...I'd want to kill her myself if I were in your situation. You have to approach it rationally and level headed.

They are definitely a high maintenance and demanding type of bird, and it gets tough at times. My wife and I are having our first child in March, and things are going to be rough, but you just have to adapt. I bend over backwards for Keywe, and wouldn't have it any other way. Make sure that whatever you do, DO IT IN THE BIRD'S BEST INTEREST!!! If you keep him, make sure to dedicate time for him...Don't leave him in a cage all day and ignore him...That's just mental torture for them... Do what's best for him.
-
It's sad that you think that way because my wife is due with our first in March, and not ONCE have we considered getting rid of our beaked family member. We got her and now she is our responsibility regardless of other family members... Now we have a little girl on the way. You have to spread the love between the two. I am not going to neglect either one, but only accept the fact that my life is going to get a little busier keeping them ALL happy. Getting rid of your grey is irresponsible and imho, pathetic. They have a hard enough time dealing with new changes, so don't be another loser that passes a little fragile life to somebody else just because things may get tough on you. This just pisses me off...Sorry for being so blunt but get real and man up.

Keywe got her name from the place she was born, raised, and brought home from...Key West!

I'm in the middle of it right now... I'll post comments after I'm done. It's really good so far.
