  1. I was bitten REALLY hard once... Almost needed stitches. IMO the worst bites are when they get the pads of your fingers and go through the nail. I try to keep them hidden when Makena is feeling bitey. Whenever I get bit I tend to just ignore it which is darn hard!! If there is one thing I have learned about greys, they are determined little buggahs!! If they want to bite you they will... and won't let go!!
  2. Gotta love You Tube... Unfortunately I couldn't find one that included the grey. You get the see the amazons though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=claP16e7P1Y
  3. Yah, I watched it!! I thought the Amazons were amazing... Especially the one that could sing whole songs!! You are right though... That lady didn't really know what she was talking about. She obviously doesn't have the kind of relationship that many of us have with our greys :) :)

  6. Makena is clipped, but we are planning to grow his feathers out. Yesterday we took Makena on a walk. We walked along a beach path that runs along quite a few resorts. As we were walking by one resort they were stacking lounge chairs. Right as we walked by they threw a big stack of chairs down and spooked Makena... He took off with incredible flight!!! We were amazed. Luckily we had him in a harness so Andrew just ran with him, rather than pull the tether and he made a safe landing. Granted he may not have gotten far due to his clipped wings... But he could have... So if the risk is there anyways, might as well grow them out! We just have to be very careful about shutting the doors and making sure he always has his harness when going outside.

If I ever had to give up my bird for some reason I wouldn't even think about money... The only thing important to me would be making sure my grey had the best possible home. I could never put a price tag on my grey.
  8. This was taken off the Pittsburgh Parrot Rescue web site http://pages.prodigy.net/zazubird/ppr.htm Evidently they have received written warning about it because they have a lot of nandays in the rescue. THE PENNSYLVANIA GAME COMMISSION IS IN THE PROCESS OF AMENDING THE PA LAW TO PROHIBIT THE IMPORTATION, POSSESSION, SALE AND RELEASE OF THE NANDAY CONURE IN PENNSYLVANIA. THERE WILL BE NO GRANDFATHER PROVISIONS. IF YOU OWN A NANDAY CONURE THEY WILL HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO COME INTO YOUR HOME AND KILL IT. GEE HOW NICE IS THAT!!! THAT'S OUR WONDERFUL GOVERNMENT FOR YOU. WHAT NEXT? WILL THEY BAN THE OWNERSHIP OF ALL PARROTS? PLEASE WRITE TO THE PA GAME COMMISSION AND TELL THEM TO STOP THIS BILL. IT IS THOUGHT THE BAN IS BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THAT THE CONURE CAN SURVIVE IN PA AND POSE A THREAT TO HUMAN HEALTH/SAFETY AND A THREAT TO WILDLIFE. THEY BELIEVE THAT THE CONURE CAN ESCAPE THEIR HOMES AND SPREAD BIRD FLU AND PSITTACOSIS TO THE WILD BIRDS. THEY NEED TO BE EDUCATED BECAUSE IT'S THE WILD BIRDS THAT POSE THE THREAT TO OUR PET BIRDS. THE NEXT MEETING ON THIS SUBJECT IS IN HARRISBURG, PA ON JANUARY 27, 28 AND 29TH. THEY ARE ACCEPTING COMMENTS ON THIS SUBJECT UNTIL JANUARY 27TH AND YOU CAN SEND YOUR COMMENTS TO: Pennsylvania Game Commission 2001 Elmerton Avenue Harrisburg, PA 17110-9797 (717) 787-4250 pgccomments@state.pa.us ALSO WRITE TO ALL THE PA LEGISLATORS TO URGE THEM NOT TO PASS SUCH A LAW.
  9. We are in the market for a new cage for Makena as we will soon be moving back to the mainland. I know SS cages are 3 to 4 times more expensive than powder coated, but is it worth it? Do they last 3 to 4 times as long?? What are your opinions? Thanks!
  10. Like everyone said it is different for every grey. Makena took 5 months to the day
  11. I am so glad you are back Penny!!! I have missed you so much!!! I bet you are sooo happy to have the move done and behind you!! It just hasn't been the same around here without you. I enjoy our conversations and your posts so much ;) ;) You are a great friend and I am so happy you are back :) :)
  12. I don't know anything about the chewing, but.... You are in luck, one of the top avian vets in the country is in the Bay Area! My fiance always took his parrots to him, and as soon as we move back to the Bay Area plan to take Makena to him as well. He is in Oakley, CA. His name is Brian Speer and he is at the Oakley Vet & Bird Hosp. - 925-625-1878 Here is a excerpt about him from www.parrots.org Avian veterinarian Dr. Brian Speer was raised in a small town on California’s coast. He received his BS in Biology from California Polytechnic State University in 1978, and his DVM degree from the University of California at Davis in 1983. An active member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV), Dr. Speer is a much sought after guest speaker and has presented at numerous conferences in the avicultural and zoological communities both within the United States and abroad. He is well published in the AAV annual proceedings, has served as guest editor for the journal Seminars in Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine, the Veterinary Clinics of North America, and authored chapters in several recent veterinary medical texts on pet bird, avicultural and ratite medical topics. In 1995 he co-authored the extensive avicultural reference, The Large Macaws, and helped to co-author Birds for Dummies in 1999. Since 1989, Dr, Speer has run a “bird’s only” practice in the San Francisco Bay area and is the President and Director of The Medical Center for Birds. He is a consultant for The Veterinary Information Network (Avian Medical Boards) and the Maui Animal Rescue and Sanctuary. In 2003 he was the recipient of the Lafeber award for excellence in private practice of avian medicine and surgery and in 2006, was named Speaker of the Year for the North American Veterinary Conference.
  13. Makena

    Price

We paid $700 for Makena directly from a breeder. As it turns out the breeder was shady and lied to us. He sold us a very young/unweaned grey. Makena also came to us with lice and worms which cost us hundreds in vet bills. When we picked him up he was living in a small box and covered with poo and baby formula. I think what is more important than the price is how the bird is treated. Make sure he/she is FULLY WEANED and ask about a guarantee. Many breeders will give a certain amount of time for you to get the grey vet checked. Do it right away... There are many threads that discuss everything you should ask your vet at a wellness check. We feel like we rescued Makena. We had a very stressful first couple of months with him. We would have paid A LOT more for the breeder to have treated him better. We feel like we rescued him. I guess what I am trying to say is... Don't base your search on price. Educate yourself and build a good rapport with your breeder. Sorry for the novel here!! I know you just wanted a price...LOL!! :pinch: :pinch: :pinch:
  14. That was painful to read... I can't even imagine how much they must be hurting over the loss. I am hoping for a safe return of Tink. Keep looking Shanlung!!
  15. I know... It's been rough, but I think we will get through it. Tonight I may toy with the idea of turning off the ceiling fan. It's too soon to tell
  16. LOL Joe!!   It got down to the low 60's last night. I actually slept under the covers. 80 right now... big surprise! We are going to go take Mak for a walk on the beach
  17. Makena

    Fly!

Thanks Mark for the info. Makena will be 8 months old in a couple of days... go I guess we have a ways to go! Surprisingly, Makena is very good at flying even though he is clipped. He does it all the time. He flies from his cage to the kitchen table or from his cage to the front door (trying to find Andrew every time he leaves). When spooked he is actually able to gain some lift. We can't wait until his wings grow back! Thanks so much for sharing the pics!
  18. He looks happy and healthy!! What a beautiful and adorable chick!!! He seems to be thriving with his genetic issue. I wouldn't worry too much about it Just keep loving him ;)
  19. Mak is typically out from about 8am to 10pm. The only time he is in his cage is to sleep or if we need to go out for some reason. He is usually on one of our shoulders or hanging out on his playstand. Obviously not everyone has the luxury of being able to leave their greys out all day. We don't have any other pets and someone is usually always home. Your best bet is to read your grey and figure out if his out of cage time is sufficient... If he is anything like Mak, he will let you know
  20. Makena

    Fly!

Awesome pics!!!! We can't wait until Makena's flights grow back in!! Question.... How old was she when you clipped her, and how long did it take for her feathers to come back in??
  21. Keep em coming! Harrison is soooo beautiful!!! ;)
  22. The Sugar Bowl is the college football championship game... And yes it is a US thing It was Hawaii vs. Georgia. Hawaii lost miserably...
  23. Aloha all... Just sitting here watching the sugar bowl. I'm not really rooting for anyone. I just figure this is the only thing people will be talking about around here for quite a while... LOL! Just keeping updated on current events
