George is a closet talker, he only talks when he thinks no one is listening or in the room where he is, some greys are like that. I would give him some more time Marie, one week is not long and it may just take him more time to feel comfortable enough to come out and explore. Keep talking to him and giving him treats, maybe play with some toys nearby where he can see you and make out like you are having the time of your life and see if that peaks his interest.

You don't know much about greys do you but you came to the right place for info. Yes indeed, 5 months still qualifies as a baby and she is doing the handfeeding bit with your finger in her beak and bobbing her head. They are usually fed with a syringe and they bob their heads up and down when eating. I would ignore this behavior. Why don't you introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us a little more about you and this Tag like have you named her?
-
That is a perfect example of how they may prefer a particular veggie a certain way, Sassy just prefers shredded, just as we as humans have our preferences so do they, glad you found a way she will eat her carrots.
-
Then I would leave it in the cage for her, she may go back to using it again when she feels more comfortable and if not you can remove it. Some birds will use them and some will not.

How about just posting the link here in this thread so we all will know where to go for those extensions, I have seen them before but didn't know where to go to get them, thanks Penny.

I'm so sorry to hear this Val, it seems that she has been sick for a while since she had lost some weight too. Sometimes things happen and if it is genetic then there is no way you could have prevented it. It just wasn't meant to be, that seems cruel but life can be sometimes and we just have to accept it and go on. If she is still perky it may seem that things are fine but looks can be deceiving and I wish you had better news for us but glad you shared the news with us for we can be of some support to you if you will let us. Are you considering doing the angioplasty? I know this would be an expensive procedure and probably are no guarantees that it will work but whatever decision you make please keep us informed for we care deeply.

That is the sweetest looking thing, only 2 lbs when fully grown, how tiny she is but so precious looking, I love that color and thanks for sharing your new addition to your family with us.

Yes they are super messy, if you give one you may want to do it in the shower so you can easily wash down the walls afterward:ohmy: :pinch:

Erika, I am so proud of you for taking in this bird, I know you and your husband wanted a baby but this bird needed you as much as you needed it. It is deplorable how someone could keep a bird in such conditions, he doesn't know yet how much better his life is going to be from now on but he soon will. He is a nice looking bird and even though he has been on a seed only diet he doesn't look malnourished but if it was years down the road he probably would, thank god you got him at a younger age. I am sure with a little time and much patience we will hear some amazing things about him from you, you have a big heart and I look forward to seeing more pictures of him. Thanks Erika for rescuing this amazon from his hell hole of living conditions and giving him a home filled with love and attention, thank you, thank you, thank you.

The others have given you some excellent advice and I too work outside the home on weekdays. I leave the radio on and she has her toys to play with while I am gone. I let her out when I get home and she is out until her bedtime and it works for me. There are all kinds of foraging toys you can provide and we have some threads that have some you can make from things commonly found around the house so it does not have to cost you a fortune to provide them with foraging opportunities. I have to commend you for asking before you just go out and get the grey, it shows your committment to one and your desire to provide what is in the bird's best interest. Now that you have decided to get a grey, why don't you make an introduction post in the welcome room and tell us a little more about you.

What did you have for a bed? My Josey just perches on her boing to sleep for the night, some members greys use a tent like hut that hangs in the cage but they decide where they will sleep and some will just use one of their perches. She slept on her water bowl because she was in a strange place and that is the first place she saw as suitable and maybe she just didn't want to move off it but when she feels more comfortable she will find where she wants to sleep.

I look forward to it Roger:cheer:

Hello David and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and your new grey. You don't know much about greys do you? Have you ever had a parrot before? What is her name and is she dna'd a female? She has just been brought into a new home with strange surroundings so give her a little time to settle in and get comfortable. Talk to her in a gentle voice and let her get used to you and any others in your family. She probably sat on the water dish because that is the first place she saw to perch and stayed there but she will move around her cage more after she gets used to it, just be patient with her. Quivering in the chest area is normal and you will see her do this from time to time, nothing to worry about. You will find lots of useful information in our many threads so please read thru them at your leisure and do not hesitate to ask any and all questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. If you have some pictures of her you would share with us we would love to see them.

Rikki loves them boxes, what cheap toys they make, she is easy to please since we all have boxes laying around, thanks for sharing her with us. B)

Rabbit toys huh, well I knew we could get toys meant for human babies but never thought of trying toys made for rabbits, thanks Penny for the suggestion, I will check it out.  :side:

Marla, he probably just likes the sound it makes, who knows what goes thru their head, it may be an attention getter but in any case do not worry about it, ignore it if it is bothering you or he will do it all the more.

Check with your local avian vets and pet stores to see if one is available in your area. I belong to a local bird club and we have an annual bird fair in June. Do you subscribe to Bird Talk magazine, if so they have a listing of bird fairs all over the US and some bird rescues have seminars on different topics about parrots that are worthwhile to attend.

I would suggest you check with the local avian vets and pet stores to see if they know of any bird clubs in your area. I am fortunate that there is one in my area and I am a member of it, in fact they have a meeting next week.

Thanks Linda for sharing that link with us, looks like a good price on it as I seen prices well over $100, I am going to order one for Josey.

Ralph, they apply to Tags as well as there is not that much difference between the Cags and Tags but the color of the beak, smaller bodies and tail color. When the term african grey is used it means either. The towel game comes in handy whenever you might have to towel them for doing something to them you might not want to do such as removing a blood feather or the vet examining them, that way the sight of a towel is not stressful in itself.

Hello Marius and welcome to the family, so glad you found us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Ash. So you are not new to the grey world having had them before and now you are ready to bring another one back into your life, be sure you are ready to make this committment. You will find lots of useful information including the safe branches list in our many threads so read thru them at your leisure and do not hesitate to ask any and all questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. I look forward to seeing some pics of Ash when you can get them to share with us.

My Josey did not talk until she was 1 year old so you have plenty of time yet for yours to start talking, some may be 2 years old before they talk. A few may not talk at all but the odds he will talk are good. Just continue to do what you are doing and one day he may surprise you with some words, they do it at their own pace so be patient.

Yeah have some toys in the cage for her to play with, it probably won't take long and as babies they usually take to new toys more quickly than they do as they get a little older. Put her in the cage and then later open up the door and see if she will venture out, she will come out when she is ready and it may be fairly quickly.

Poor Charlie and I know you probably had the hardest time, it is not pleasant to see our birds go thru any pain so know you felt so bad for him but it is over now and maybe he will be his old self soon. Thanks Caroline for letting us know.
