Just got a baby timneh grey.
Breezy2013 replied to Breezy2013's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
He is extremely smart. I got his toys today and he is having so much fun. His favorite toy was a freebie as a thanks for the order. It is an acrylic ring with a stone and in the center of the stone there is a silver teardrop embedded. He kept turning that thing over in his feet for the longest time just trying his best to get that silver sparkley thing out of the stone. He loves the orher toys too and he and my macaw just had the most fun night. -

I wish I could totally bird proof my house and do that. Maybe some day if I am really, really lucky. For now they are out all the time when we are home but they go back into their cage to stay safe when we go to doctors appointments or do our errands. We are never gone more than two to three hours at a time at the most. We are both disabled, unfortunately for us but I am sure fortunately for our animals. But they are the ones who count, anyways, so I suppose it is all good. They are kind of like kids, we could never have any. -
Can I teach my Grey to lay on his back or is this a long shot?
Breezy2013 replied to tankaray's topic in Training
I just taught Breezy to lie on his back. I think he thought I might drop him or something so I am going to have to go slow and teach him gradually. -
So far he has been good. Working with him several times a day on his stepping up and down. Maybe that's why.

He is amazing, Nancy. He is sitting on my knee now just enjoying some out time. Actually, he is out almost all the time. Probably the best thing for him. -
Ideas for shreddable toys I can make?
Breezy2013 replied to Breezy2013's topic in Homemade Toys & Playstands
Thanks so much for those links. I am reading through them all, lots of great ideas. Had a little bit of excitement today. Clipped a toenail too short, had to apply kwik stop but he is fine now and is eating. Poor guy moved right when I pressed down on the handles to clip and cut too much. -

Awesome ideas! I am going to make some toys! Will let you know how I do, think I can make tons of toys with things around the house. -
Can you keep a timneh friendly with two people?
Breezy2013 replied to Breezy2013's topic in The Nursery
So far so good with both of us. He is still young but seems to like us both. Breezy is a great bird. Greys are awesome! Compared to my macaw he is quiet, too. -
Hi everybody. We still absolutely love Breezy. He is great with both of us and I have some toys I ordered on the way. Anyone got some more great ideas for shredable homemade toys? He LOVES stuff he can rip apart and destroy. He wants me to keep them coming. Wrapping up treats in paper to make foraging toys but I would love some more advanced ideas. I am kind of handy and artistic but just need some help sometimes with ideas. Have looked through the threads in this forum and have seen some imaginative ideas for homemade toys so I am sure I could get tons of ideas here. Thanks in advance for any responses I get. I think it might be cool to weave things to make toys and am just trying to brainstorm ideas for safe materials I can use that my two birds will have fun with.

Tried a new toy with Breezy last night and today. It is a wicker foraging ball toy. Filled it with Harrions and pretty bird pellets and he was having so much fun with it. Got more toys coming, I just ordered them yesterday. -

Yes, they sure do find a way to get into things. Ordered a bunch of toys for him today. Cant wait till they get here, the little guy is bored and needs plenty to do. He is very intelligent, that is for sure. -

Gave Breezy some dried fruit then left the bag on the table where his playstand is. Well, he climbed down, grabbed the bag in his beak climbed back up to his perch and took the twist tie off the bag with his beak and I caught him helping himself to more fruit. He is a pretty smart little bugger! -

He said hello clearly tonight again. He actually sounds a little like me I can hear the resemblance to my voice. Taping it is a good idea. I dont think anyone in my family believes he is talking so soon. He has been here less than a week but really he has made himself right at home here and seems very happy. He is doing the talking sounds, heard him after I covered his cage for the night. He sounded like he was practicing. Him and my macaw have been talking back and forth to one another as well. They are on separate ends of the house for now, kind of a quarantine. -
Thanks, good thread. Got some good ideas there. I think I may try making some corn muffins and put some veggies in and see if he will try those. They are very much like kids when they are babies. Dont like their veggies.

Well, I have Breezy in his cage with some carrots, apples and greens. He is getting there in that he is taking little bites and I see some on the bottom of the cage but I can tell he is not too crazy about them. Naturally enough he likes the apples, they must taste good to him. For now sneaking the veggies in his oatmeal chopped fine so he gets the benefit. So far I am tricking him and he doesnt know. Hope he doesnt catch on and figure it out, he needs veggies and a good diet. Thank God he loves his pellets and is eating those great. Got to hide from him while he is in there. When he sees me he jumps on the side of the cage closest to me flutters his wings and begs to come out. He does need to learn to occupy himself in his cage though. I really love him a lot, I couldnt be happier with him. The timnehs have so much personality. They may be little but I have always loved them.

@ Brat Birds, am not much taller than you and will most likely be reaching up to get the little guy a lot. Lol! He is pretty good about letting me get him no matter where he is. Hopefully he stays that way even when he gets older.

That is nice they let us think we are in charge because we all know in reality they are the ones that rule the house, not us. Lol!

I already love my guy, he is great so if he never learns anything other than what he is already trying to say now that is fine with me, too. He has the nicest personality, just one of the friendliest birds I have ever seen. -

Funny thing is talking is not that important to me so I am not really giving him lessons. More interested in a birds personality but he seems to be just listening to us talk and practicing what we are saying. Now and then I can pick out a word he is trying to say. Heard hello a time or two. -
Hi everyone. Breezy is only three or at the most four months old and he is already practicing saying words as he was mumbling to himself yesterday and he does it every time I talk to him. How old are TAG's usually when they start talking? I know it is usually six to 12 months when they start but many on here have said there birds have started earlier.

Breezy is eating pellets. Going to make him another salad soon want to mix up the times I feed him a little later and earlier but not by much so he isnt on an absolutely rigid schedule. Uncovered him just a bit later today, too at 8:00. think he needs to catch up on sleep as did I as we have been all awake at 5:00 am every single day since he got here. Generally he hears us moving around and whistles at us till we uncover him. Brutus is out on her own gym and eating as well so will make up veggies for both of them. -
Just know they CAN really bite very hard if they want to so want to prevent problems. He is young, only three months old. Still a baby. Just want to do the right thing with him. So far he has been really great. His breeder did awesome with him and he adjusted to us so fast. He is really friendly and confident. She is a really small scale breeder, gives them all tons of attention so I want to make sure he stays nice. Had an amazon before never a handfed grey so I am learning.
-
All he does to me is test my hand with my beak before stepping down to me. He wants to make sure my hand is a secure perch. That is not the same as biting. He did bite me kind of hard the first night I had him because he didnt know me and it was nothing like my macaw biting me so maybe he is biting and it just isnt bothering me much. Doesnt hurt, anyways.
-
Quick question for you guys. Breezy loves to sit up top of his cage but it is above my eye level. Some on here have said that wont promote aggression in a grey to let him sit up high. Others say not to let them do so. He always steps up when he climbs up there when I take him off without nipping. Think he really likes it there and his breeder let him do so so I know he prefers it. Would it hurt or make him more comfortable and make the adjustment easier if I let him do it. He does try to leave the play pen occasionally to get to his cage. He seems to feel secure on his cage. Sometimes I wonder if the whole theory is bunk about hight and domenance. My macaw has gotten up to the top of her cage occasionally too and she has never, ever bitten me. Dont really think parrots base their heirarchies on dominance anyways. I could be totally wrong just my observation after having them for many years. I have found if I respect them they dont usually bite to hurt.

Made Breezy a salad this morning with Carrots, peppers, greens and apple. He loved it! Especially the apples and carrots. I have him here on my knee now while I am typing at the computer as he just flew to the ground from his gym and came and looked for me.
