Hyacinth Macaws (hope these pics come out!)

I thought other members might like to see some pics I took from a zoo at the weekend. These beautiful birds took my breath away. The fairest of them all - the beautiful Hyacinth Macaw, THE most endangered of the parrot species. You'd need a very large house to keep this one as a pet - not recommended as it's probably illegal to do so! Hope these pics come out, this is my second attempt

I couldn't get over the size of the feet and length of tails on these blue Macaws, also they seemed keen to interact with us even though they were only partially tame. The colours were vibrant and these pics do not do them justice. Imagine these in the wild!

In all honesty Hyacinths are very very social birds, they are also quite gentle. Their diets highly consist of palm nuts. Considering their diet is extremely expensive the alternatives are many, almonds, walnuts, pecans, ect.. (no peanuts). Considering the diet is expensive the bird is nearly 10 times that amount at a whomping $15,000 for the average Hyacinth. Not only that because the bird is so huge they take almost a year to wean too. As funny as it sounds they make blue and gold macaws look very small in comparison. The power of the beak however. Is crazy. The palm nuts they eat, they can open with ease. In order for us to open the same nut, we need to use a sledge hammer..... If you've ever snapped a twig with your fingers before this bird can do the very same to a broom stick in one bite. As far as playing they play much much rougher than other birds. but their temperment is incredible. If you ever happend to get one it'd be a pretty rewarding experience. If you've ever been on youtube you can see them talking and running around and what not. Their voices are very clear and pretty loud. It's almost like you being in the living room and it's in another room the bird sounds like it's yelling the words. After having time in a bird rescue I liked the hyacinths quite a bit but not enough to actually get one or the hefty tag they come with. But their temperment is great.

We went to a Animal Jungle store in Virginia Beach, VA a couple of weeks ago and they had a 8 month old Hyacinth Macaw for sale there. He was the most beautiful bird - price tag of 10,888.00. Very playful, the girl there was just swinging him around and he seemed to be having a blast and enjoying the audience. BIG OLE BEAK!!!

WOW! What a gorgeous bird Bonnie. Those beaks are soooo scary looking. My breeder had one as a pet and he was the sweetest thing, he tried to get me to hold him I took a look at that beak and I was like, noooo wayyy! haha, they are very intimidating.

Those beaks are very big but they are known as "gentle giants" because they usually have a good disposition at least as compared to other parrots.

We had a bird club member who had two of these at least part of the year but she had to give them up because of her poor health, she would bring them to our bird fair so everyone could see them.

They do have powerful beaks as they can crack macadamia nut shells and those are very touch, worse than brazil nuts so they have the ability to lop off a finger very easily.

Thanks JJ for sharing a pic of one with us.
