John_Woodside
Hi, when I'm shopping at the grocery store after I get my bird, I want to be able to look at the nutrition information and see if the bird can eat it and how much and so on, so I want to know if there are any general established daily values of things like sodium and carbs and calories for congo greys. I'll even take a guess-timation from an experienced owner/breeder
judygram
I would stick with vegetables, grains, legumes, fruits, nuts and cereals as a basic diet, we have a thread that has a list of vegetables and fruits that you can offer. I would stay away from any processed foods as they are often loaded with salt so naturally you would avoid anything with added salt. Most anything with added sugar is a no no too. I would suggest you go thru the bird food room and read everything there for you will find lots of info and advice and then if you have specific questions just ask. BaxtersMom
Judy is right. You have to be careful what you buy at the grocery store as alot of it has lots of sugars, additives, preservatives, salt and so on. Always read the back of the packages to see the ingredients list. I found a Whole Foods Store where they sell organic seeds and nuts that you can buy and make your own seed/nut mix and they list the nutritional values next to each seed and nut. As for how much of each they need to get, I think that would be a question that you should discuss with your avian vet.
John_Woodside
ahh, good deal. I was actually looking at some of Harris teeters freshly prepared things, the salt content wasn't super high on any of them.
she
I always stick to natural foods, veg, fruit, whole grain cerials. I dont feed the dried fruits as the ones my supermarket sells have preservatives and colourings in. I never give anything with added salt or sugar.I do feed some organic seeds as a treat.
