Can anyone please tell me why my African Grey is always Scratching herself and shedding a dandruff like substance from her body ?
she’s only 6 months old has a daily bath and seems very happy. If she is itchy then I want to be able to help her. Any info would be muchly appreciated.

cheers, Steve

Hi Steve,

Is she constantly/continuously scratching or is it just occasional?

African Grey's are notoriously dusty. They produce lots of dander and dust. when Alfie shakes or scratches you can see little puffs of dust flying off him sometimes. This is normal- the dust helps keep their feathers in good condition and helps repel water.

Thanx so much for your help. My grey scratches a fair bit and will go for 5 minutes or more each time she does. Most of the time she’s playing, chewing, walking around the floor and spending time in her foraging box. She’s a very happy girl and so well behaved yet I’ve noticed once she’s got something on her mind it’s hard to distract her. Shes very strong willed but also very affectionate and funny. Best pet I’ve ever had. Thanks again. 😃👍

Greys and Cockatoos are both hi dander parrots.

You will end up doing a lot of dusting in your home, but they are worth it.

People with allergies may have a difficult time around a Grey or a Too and need to get a air purifier to help clean the air and filter out the dust and dander.

Enjoy your Grey. They are awesome !!

I wouldn't worry too much unless you start seeing feather or skin damage or irritated skin. If she seems to be focusing on a certain spot and making it sore/bald then it may be worth stepping in and maybe getting an avian vet appointment booked in. But otherwise, they do normally create a LOT of dust and dander.

I'd love to see some photos of your baby grey. What's her name?
