Talon Posted March 15, 2015 Share Posted March 15, 2015 I had 2 parakeets that my 2 sons got when they were younger. Of course they lost interest in them and they spent most of their lives in their flight cage, and I took care of them. They were very bonded. One past away last summer, and shortly after, the one left stopped talking or whistling. He was silent. I always tried to talk to him or whistle at him, but he had no interest. He was getting quite old looking and I knew he was failing the last couple of months. When I uncovered his cage on Tuesday morning, he was laying dead on the bottom of his cage. It was very sad, but I am glad he didn't suffer. It is winter here, I want to bury him next to his buddy ...I wrapped him in a towel and put him in a birdie tent I had and buried him in the snow outside for now....I'm hoping that as soon as the snow melts, I can dig a place for him. They were a bonded pair, had never laid eggs, but were always together. They, too, chirped, whistled and made all kinds of Budgie noises. They were named George & Gracie, after Burns & Allen. They were not young, though not old, when I got them. After about 6 years, one day, I uncovered them, and Gracie was dead. George was obviously confused & upset. He wouldn't let me touch her, and bit my hand viciously when I tried to remove her. Neither one had ever bit me previously. I left them alone for most of the day. That evening, I took her out of the cage. George was quiet all day, and hardly moved from next to her. The next day he was pretty subdued, and obviously grieving. When I covered him that night, he peeped twice, and I hoped that was a good sign. The next morning, when I uncovered him, he was dead. I really believe he died of a broken heart. I buried them together with their favorite swing. Neither one showed any signs of illness. And I like to believe that his last 2 peeps were him saying Good Bye & Thank you for caring for them. katana600 Posted March 17, 2015 Share Posted March 17, 2015 Aw, so sorry for the loss of your littlest ones. It is very sweet how much they bonded with the cage mate, and sad to see them left behind. Losing two at a time is rough too. No matter how big, no matter how small their lives mattered and its good to know they had happy homes while you loved them in your homes. Caring of birds is too risky and difficult, but you did very well and gave a safe place. Hope this one will not leave you alone. I had a pair of parrots last year. They were so beautiful. I always felt relaxed and happy with them. A few month ago, I lost both of them. It was very sad moment for me and I was feeling quite alone. Then, I decided to create pencil sketch drawing of pair. One of my friends helped to create it and it is hanged on wall in my house. Whenever I feel alone, I see that sketch and feel like they are talking with me.
