Alfiecam!

Alfie.jpg

Here's a few photos of Alfie from today. He was chilling out on his tree and on the back of the armchair.

And here's today's footage from my DLink camera. It captures a few seconds of footage when a sound triggers it (over 90db) and then emails it to me. I picked out the best ones from today and shoved them together. Nothing fancy, but just shows what noises Alfie makes during the day.

Maalik was listening intently to Alfie's vocalizations, and my duskies were answering back to some of his calls. So cute!

Haha that's pretty cool.

Alfie always perks up and listens intently when I'm watching parrot/bird videos too!

Here's the latest AlfieCam video. I managed to sneak my camera phone into the room whilst Alfie was exercising his vocal chords this morning. He looked at it for a bit then carried on from where he left off.

He recently learned to say "Hiya!" which I managed to catch in this video (probably from all the skype calls I have with my 19 month old nephew, where he shouts "hiya!" repeatedly and I say it back haha)

Alfie also seems to be learning the phrase "What noise does a ___ make?". We've taught him a duck and chicken noise so far and now he wants to learn to ask himself the question. He's managed to get to "what noise..." so far! (Which is a step further than the "what" he started with!)

So cute! Nice big cage too :)

Thanks! It's the Liberta Enterprise if I remember correctly. I got it a few years back when I had a bit more space to play with. It now sits in the centre of my lounge/dining room (which actually houses my computer and piano rather than a dining table) so he's in the middle of everything.

Seems like a great space for him! Wish the conversion to USD wouldn't be so pricey or I'd get one.

It's ok, they have a lot better play stands on your side of the pond. I've only managed to find a couple of different types here (which are quite pricey!) but you guys seem to have all sorts of cool stuff for birds!

Cute video. I never noticed Alfie had a bit of a cross beak before.

Ah yeah, he's had it for quite a few years now. I have to take him to the vet to keep it maintained.

Unfortunately the first time I noticed that it needed doing I took him to a more local avian vet who gassed him to do it. He also didn't do a particularly good job of it and it seemed to grow out worse after that. Since then I've taken him to a vet that's in the next town (only about half an hours drive away if the traffic is good) who is much better at handling Alfie and he doesn't gas him. I think he said they use some kind of water drill for it? Alfie gets a bit damp from it but generally he's not too bothered by it and will be whistling and chirping on the way home.

I don't know if it's particularly common for parrots to have wonky beaks like Alfie's or if Alfie was just unlucky that his grew out like that. I'm not sure there's much else I can do other than keep taking him to the vets to keep it in check. It doesn't seem to bother Alfie at all though. He can eat, drink and chew just fine and still uses it to get around ok. He has lots of different perches made from various materials which he can rub it on and that mostly keeps it in check- but I still have to take him to the vet every so often.

Is Alfie making chicken noises there? Too funny! When I played it Sully perked right up and listened for a few seconds then started making his beat-box noise lol

He can make a chicken noise- I didn't pick it up in the latest video but I believe he has made it in one of the previous ones on this thread. It's normally a "bok bok bok bok" kind of noise. My housemate taught him to make duck and chicken noises and I've started trying to teach him "what noise does a duck make" and "what noise does a chicken make" to try and associate the noise with the question. We're getting there! I think it's brilliant that he's trying to learn the question as well as the noise!

I LOVE Sully's beatboxing noises! Especially the 'wakka wakka' bits! They get me every time!
