Buckeye Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 I've heard that some people do not like play top cages because they think the bird will feel more dominant? What do you guys think?
Timbersmom Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 The only difference I can tell in Timber's behavior is if he is in the cage or out of it. Height doesn't seem to affect his behavior. In other words, he will step up for me from high up on his boing (over my head) as easily as he will when he is lower. However, if he is in the cage he doesn't much like me reaching for him inside, though you will usually comply. Others may have different experiences. As with many things, I think that may be an individual bird temperament issue.
Luvparrots Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 I do not have any problems with my greys being higher or lower than me. They will still step up whether they are higher up or lower.
BaileysPapa Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Same here. My Bailey loves his playtop, and spends a lot of his alone time up there. When I go to get him, he steps up readily. And his perch up there is above my head.
judygram Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 It really is a myth that birds feel more dominant higher up, my fids will all step up from a higher position.
Inara Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Same here. I've never had any issues with Inara, nor her predecessors in coming to me from either high places or low. I have head of other birds who become cage aggressive up top, but I've never experienced that.
Talon Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Judy is right, the whole dominance thing in them being higher than us is completely untrue. I have perches across my sky lights and it doesn't make any difference, they still know who's in charge....
Parrot Lady Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 I love playtop cages , all my cages are playtops
Ray P Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 I have both play top and a clamshells and my guys go to the top of both to play and will step up with no problem from each. My clamshell is higher than my play top.
kins2321@yahoo.com Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 My birds, were playtop aggresive! Meaning, they were fine unless I tried to get them to stepup if shorter! Everything was fine, until I thought I was crazy, tried to pickup my bird being shorter, and got BIT!!! I got comments about " about time you got bit"... wasnt happy. I went back to being taller. This was when they were younger. They stepup all the time. It doesn't matter now, if I am tall or short. They stepup no matter what. Nancy
