Gus, our lil baby.

Gus has been doing sooo good! However, he decided yesterday to check out the macaws and flew onto Bubbas stand. Again, i wasn't home. (we were enjoying couch time but i ended up on Gabbys couch and she was hell bent on getting me off of it. I got my last butt bite from her and just went to the farmers market to poke around.) Anyway, Gus took a flight around the living room and landed on Bubbas stand and Pat said they just beaked a little bit then Gus flew off. I am suprised, Bubba is the one always yelling at Gus telling him to stop it and telling him shut up or just screaming back at him. I thought for sure if they should ever encounter each other there would be feather loss but nope.

Had a small mishap last night. All has been going good and bedtime had become less stressful with the screaming until... The guys were were all doing their night time playing in their cages settling in for the night when Gus jumped onto a perch and it fell. Hell broke loose, understandably. I opened the door to get the perch but i guess it reminded him of the broom handle and he attacked. I had to jump behind the door for protection as he was flying at me from inside the cage, he made it out and was so upset. Pat was the only one who could calm him down. But then Pat grabbed the perch to put it back in for him, its his food bowl perch, and he started again. Pat wasn't in the room when the first attack happened so didn't know he would react like that. He hid the perch until we can work on the cage when he is out of it today. Good thing i guess he tosses his food out of the bowls, i feel less bad about him being perchless at that bowl today. Gesh, i fear the two steps back that could happen from this.

Another learning process, it is a shame they are painful. Nothing like a bird who chews through the branch they are standing on then blaming you for the fall. There will be humor in this story when the wounds heal and he will forgive you both eventually.

Nah, he should blame us for this one. The washer was too small. Never even gave it a thought, it was secure for a normal bird who perches, lol, Gus however is a bouncer and jumper. He just bounced one to many times and jarred it loose. No worse for wear and still sweet as can be. There is a bad storm moving in and the emergency broadcast keeps coming across on tv, the babies are all getting animated, well Bongo isn't but then again he hardly ever does, unless you shake a bottle with Cherrios inside it! Moving food and water to the safe room, just in case.

We are good here. 12-14 people are still missing, 6 confirmed dead. Hopefully they made it out and just have not checked in with the red cross. The storms were so thick that they masked the tornados. Surrounding towns are a mess. Hubby works at Home Depot in the Ft Worth/ Arlington area and they will be out today in the communities doing clean ups no doubt. Lesson learned though, don't wait till the last minute to be sure your safe room is cleaned out enough to fit everyone! Our room is will be getting a full clean out this weekend to accomidate 5 parrots, 4 dogs and 1 cat and me and hubby and a fish, Spike our beta. If we had to use it last night we wouldn't have fit!

Time for us all to review our emergency plans, evacuation routes, food stocks, water source, any medications & fist aid kit, important paperwork, shelter for any Weather, Earthquake, Fire or other emergency situations that could occur in your area. Better to prepare for what might happen than to be unprepared and helpless. Would be good to contact friends or relatives in another area and exchange plans to be each other safe stop to meet family or have a place to evacuate to.

Gus got me twice yesterday, flying to land on me but grabbing skin for balance. I felt like those tomato pin holders except i bleed. He got the back of my neck while i was trying to fill the coffee pot with water. I ended up watering my sugar, counter, side of the fridge and the floor instead. That was about the time Pat walked in, i was just standing there looking at the mess and he had the gull to ask, "What cha doing?" It just wasn't my night, i also threw a beer in my own face. Thank heaven only the birds saw that, Bubba laughed, but i am hoping he won't keep bringing it up and rubbing it in.

Ahh, much less painful and embarassing evening. Gabby however is killing us! Sitting on the couches, she flew after Gus in full attack mode because he was too close to Pat. Nothing like seeing a little grey chasing a umbrella too and winning. Then we gave up on peace and went to the kitchen, Pat was going to let the macaws play together so he set Oliver on the love seat to get their table set up. Gabby attacked Oliver, knocked him off the couch. We felt so bad for Oliver until later when we discovered a few pretty red tail feathers on the floor. That love seat is hers by God, Pat is the only one other than her that is allowed on it.

Gus has really started talking alot. I am not sure though if it is really talking or if being his mom and dad, only we can understand him! He did take off on a rant yelling at me, that time though i was glad i couldn't understand him. Getting yelled at by a bird isn't fun at all. ( i am pretty sure he didn't like the shrimp i offered him and was telling me so. )

Haha, i love it! Beak of doom!

I got another scolding tonight, i started talking while him and Pat were chatting. I got a what for. Pat had to calm him down telling him how i i didn't mean to talk over him, that i wasn't being rude or mean... Gesh. I am loosing control.

Raising the hand didn't work. The birds must be getting into the mood, tis the season. I had to take my happy pill tonight after my second bite on the neck from Gus. I am clueless how to stop this free flight to me short of clipping and i do not want to do that. He was happily on Pats shoulder and bam he flew to me and bit to balance. It ever my greys were going to learn bad language tonight would have been the night. He got me right over the same place he got me earlier. Arrrggghhhh! Happy thoughts, happy thoughts...

So, he got me again on my lower neck, back area. I had set my mind on getting him clipped just a bit to try and curb this action but then it hit me. He isn't flying to me but rather jumping which may be reason he bites to get his balance. Wing clip won't help. So we rearranged our living room furniture yet again to fit his stand in there with the big boys. It took two full days to figure out how but we did it, minus one lazy boy recliner. Atleast now if he flies, he has some time and i get some warning. Of course i am completly scared of him flying at me and i duck and run with the flutter of any wings now. I am not afraid of him, just the flying. As i walked thru the room yesterday carrying a dog pillow, i heard flutter and took off running down the hallway dropping and covering with the pillow. He went past me and landed but looked at me like i was crazy! I am crazy and he drove me here!

No kidding, he did pretty good on his new stand location yesterday. Took some time coaxing him out of his room, he had to stop in the doorway and chew it to the 2x4 frame. I guess it helped him think cuz he came out after a bit, wandered down the hall to the living room. When Pat got home is when the screaming started, but during the day he did great. Lol

Gus has been doing very good, or we have become deaf, not really sure which. Pat and him have a new game of keep away they play with a block of wood, it was funny to watch but when they were done i freaked out a bit. His black beak and tongue were blue from the wood. Pats fingers were blue also, i felt a little better when he washed his hands and the dye came right off. I got him some roller skates too, now that was funny. He was just fine standing on them but when they moved with him he took off flying straight at me and i was laughing to hard to duck! He may actually get the hang of them!

I sure hope i can get it on video, it is so funny. The expressions this boy has are very clear, if he is happy, mad or scared you see it all over his face. He got a bath yesterday and was not happy at all with being wet, Pat brought him to me outside to dry off and he had this very angry look in his eyes. We went and sat in the sun and as he started drying that look changed to contentment, he kinda let his wings hang down to let the air dry his underside and it looked as if he were hugging me. Once completely dry it was play time and his look changed again, eyes bright and big! For a first, Bongo was on my shoulder and Gus was on my arm, that is the closest they have been. I wish Bongo would hurry up with this harness training, i want to take him outside. Gus spoiled my slowly working at this attitude by getting right into his, mind you, i am in no way rushing Bongo, just in my mind i want him to wake up today and tell me, okay, i am good with the harness now, lets go!

So we decided to take Gus out yesterday and see how he does in public, we went to petsmart. Funny how when you go into Petsmart with your dogs, kids are all over them. That was our fear with Gus, the kids wanting to pet him or running up to him. Pat was holding him, harnessed of course, we walked past the first kid and it is like he had read our minds because he actually told Pat not to worry, he does not want to pet our bird! Loads of people up there and the only person who asked if she could pet Gus was the bansfield receptionist. Lol He did great up there! Today maybe to Lowes to get some pool shock! Our Lowes now has signs on there door that only service dogs are allowed inside, doesn't say anything about a Gus though!!
