  1. Love this idea! Looks like greycie is having a blast!
  2. Welcome to you and Captain Jack! (What an awesome name for a bird!) I'm so happy that he's settling in well for you and that he's loving all the attention you're lavishing him with! I look forward to hearing more about you both and your new adventures together.
  3. Well it seems to have worked a treat. I now make sure I put a box up there with his toys and he flies straight over there as soon as he's out of the cage, flings all his toys off and then starts pulling the box apart. So glad this worked! Even better- I have an endless supply of the boxes to hand, as they are just old toner cartridge boxes. So myself and my housemate can just grab some from work whenever needed. Katana your story made me laugh. How funny that Java managed to train your husband better than you could!
  4. Alfie discovered the shelves in the living room a few weeks back. They've been there since we moved in but he recently discovered he could land on them and throw everything off. So they are now his favourite place. The other day I was working at the computer and Alfie was busying himself by flying to and from the shelves. I left some toys and paper up there for him and he was happily throwing them all over the place. And then it went quiet. Uh oh... I didn't realise at first but I suddenly noticed that I couldn't hear Alfie doing anything. So I looked round the corner and there he was... on the shelf... re-modelling it! They are cheap shelves and he was busy pulling the laminate up from the back edge. So, being that this is his favorite spot and I know full well he's going to do everything in his power to get up there and carry on re-modelling. I decided I needed to get creative. Fortunately, I had a couple of thick cardboard boxes to hand, so they are now up there covering the spot that he started picking at. Needless to say, he had a LOT of fun chewing up the box today... and my shelves haven't been touched! Now I just need to remember to keep a stock of boxes to hand.
  5. It's not even Alfie's birthday and I just bought him a cargo net to play on. Unfortunately, whilst it turned up today, I totally forgot to pick it up from the work post room before I left work. And I'm away on a training course next week... so he won't get it until the week after next! Happy belated birthday Greycie!

    Help Please

Alfie grabs his food bowls and makes a right racket with them. He KNOWS it gets attention. Sometimes he's just letting me know that he's eaten all the tasty bits and doesn't like what's left. Other times he just does it because he knows I'll look over/check it out. He also loves noisy toys like bells. You could try ignoring the behaviour and then pay attention again once she stops/does something else... but once they've found something noisy or something which pushes your buttons, it'll be a difficult behaviour to change.
  7. Ditto to Sterling! I think it's fantastic that this was able to happen!
  8. Hello and welcome to the forums!
  9. Apologies, but I laughed so hard about this one!!!

Ah geez, she makes me so parrot broody haha! Lovely photos.
  11. Hah, that's great! I hope you both manage to sort something.
  12. Aaah ok. Poor Sully. Glad it's all healed ok!
  13. Ah Sully is one beautiful birdy! Just curious about his right eye (well, right on the photos). His pupil (?) looks to be a different shape to Alfie's. Alfie's pupils (? - the black central part of the eye) are both round.
  14. Same with Alfie. He's not a cuddler. He will let me scratch his head... when HE wants me to. If I tried anything else, I'd damn well know about it.
  15. Do you have any friends/family that could house sit and take care of feeding/watering duties? They might not be able to let them out of the cages whilst you're gone (especially if they're wary of birds) but at least the birds will be in a familiar environment.
  16. When Alfie and I lived with my parents he quickly learned to boss the family dog around with "Sit", "Down", "Outside", "Come on!" etc. Now I have my two cats and he's taken to yelling "Off!", "out!" and "no!" regularly.
  17. I'd go for the biggest your can afford and fit. Whilst you've said your bird will be out of the cage for most of the time, it's still useful to have a big cage for those times when the bird does have to be put away (e.g if relatives/friends come over that are wary of birds or if you need to leave the house for a while).

Aw she is just precious. Beautiful photos. It will take her a while to settle in but it'll soon seem like you've never been without her.
  19. Instead of saying 'sorry', Alfie will say 'ouch'! I can't help but chuckle.

Can't wait to hear that she's home safe with you! Obviously photos are mandatory haha
  21. Wow, they are amazing. I've never seen one that isn't flying. Didn't realise quite how small they were.
  22. Alfie grew up with our family dog, a German Shepherd called Ben. Whilst I never let them out in the same room together, they got on just fine. In fact, Ben would happily stick his nose right up to the bars and Alfie would climb down and stick his beak in Ben's nostril. Pretty gross, as he'd get covered in snot... but never never once tried to bite Ben. Alfie got out in the house once when nobody was home (I hadn't latched the food bowl door properly). My sister came home and found that Ben was very excitable. When she realised Alfie was out she had to call me at work to come home and put him away. I was amazed that neither Ben nor Alfie had managed to hurt each other. Ben was a little worried about the whole thing (hadn't seen Alfie fly before I guess) but Alfie was just enjoying his freedom for the day! It very much depends on the temperament of the animals involved. Alfie now lives with two cats- Widget and Pixel. They are both Bengals and are crazy. They'll chase anything that moves. I would NEVER trust them out in the same room with Alfie- I'm not sure who would come off worse. But one of them can pluck a fly out of the air so I dread to think what would happen if Alfie was flying around them.
  23. That's the most adorable thing I've seen in a long time!

Ooo wow! So excited for you! How long is the flight? Can't wait to hear more about her once you have her home and settled!
