  1. Today is a beautiful spring day. I decided to take the squeak squad ( 4 caiques) in their carriers outside. I also took Neytiri (CAG) who just turned two yesterday out on her harness for the fresh air. Neytiri was flying in a circle nicely and landed in the grass. I went to pick her up and as I bent down a hawk flew over my head and landed in the tree behind me about 20 feet away. I scooped Neytiri up and held her close. Ran to the open garage and yelled to hubby to get the squeaks. I was so scared. I was looking to the sky for hawks as we have many here. Please be ever vigilant when your bird is in the open.
  2. That's funny. Creative though.
  3. That's what happened when Neytiri had an infected preening gland. If you lootkat the gland it looked like a big red pimple. Tom a while for all the feathers to grow back and Neytiri had to spend some time in a cone. But she's good to go now.
  4. Neytiri is entering her terrible twos. She's getting rather feisty. She give me little nips when I'm paying attention to the squeak squad (the caiques) prob because she's jealous. I taught her "gentle" early on and that seems to help.
  5. Here's a couple things to try. One you could just sit near her and be silent. The other is to walk over say hi and immediately walk away. Both will show her that there are no expectations. It worked for hubby and Neytiri. Also try not to show any emotion to the nail biting or she may do it more. Sassy
  6. I would watch for active bleeding. Keep him warm and comfy. Hope everything is ok. Sassy
  7. Trying not to stress over it. Gave her some meds tonight so hopefully she won't go too nuts preening overnight.
  8. Yeah! She got the cone off tonight. No bubble either. She's preening and scratching like a madman though. Gave her a shower to help. She's a little aggressive on her preening around the neck and has pulled some pin feathers. Hopefully she settles down and doesn't continue to pick at them.
  9. I would be concerned too. Have you taken her to the vet yet to rule out any illness? Neytiri plucked when she had an infectin in her preening gland. (Hopefully the cone comes off tomorrow night).
  10. They are also dangerous. They can get caught in loose fabric and threads.
  11. She seems so relieved to have the cone off. She still has the bubble part on. At least it's a short work week this week so she will have lots of time out of the cone this weekend.
  12. Vet is pleased with what he sees. So the plan is meloxacam when the cone is off. And cone is only off during the day while supervised. I have to give her a bath everyday or at least spray her with this special spray. Next visit is in 3 weeks but I have to call and check in in a week.
  13. Taking Neytiri to the vet this am. Time to see if we get to take the cone of shame off. Fingers crossed.
  14. Congrats. Little baby steps. It will take time.
  15. This not just true of greys. Butch our 'too gave me 3 good pinches one day when I had on a bright multi-colored tye-die shirt. Figured it out after the third hit and went and changed and he was a cuddle bug.
  16. Earlier in the year we had to have work done arougn the house... We moved cages to the garage and the fids were boarded for several days... It's just not work the risk to me. I did go and visit with them while they were boarding... it was like they had a big sleep over. Good luck with the spider issue... I do not envy you. Sassy
  17. yes definately looking forward to it... it has been neat to watch her adjust and figure out how to do things like climb on her tree and in her cage... I know she really wants to fly... she's always pulling her wings up like she's about to take off and realizes she can't... she'll shoot you a look as if to say "a little help over here"
  18. Things are going great. Her feathers are coming in nicely. She chatting up a storm. She has even figured out ways get to some of her feathers to preen. I've been giving her lots of baths even though she hates them. If even been taking her cone off for a couple minutes every night and observing her preening. She doing great! Saturday she goes back for a recheck and we should be coming home with no cone. I'm going to have to get her some new toys to celebrate. Sassy

Wow this is pretty neat. Playing catch up on a lot of reading. Thanks for the explanation.
  20. Yes used photobucket img URL. Sheis getting used to it on as she's trying to fly. Nothing more than a couple feet. And she has learned how to climb around with it. The neatest is to watch her figure out how to preen some areas that she can reach. She tucks the cone under her wing to get her flight feathers, legs, and tail.
  21. Ask and you shall receive. Can't really see the pins as her wings cover them.
  22. Thanks everyone. It's hard watching Neytiri trying so hard to preen herself. She has figured out how to get her flight feathers, her legs, and the tip of her tail.
