I know, however that is what my rescue lca was named when we got her!! LOL We changed it to Kiwi!

I saw it. I thought it was amazing! He takes unwanted, abused birds and trains them. He makes his living doing shows. I am hoping that we get to see more of him and his parrots.

King's Cage Safety Leash: Is this even a good idea???
brianlinkles replied to FirstPenguin's topic in The GREY Lounge
That scares me to death! I cannot imagine. It looks so heavy for around the ankles and so , so dangerous looking. Is it only me? -
I would LOVE to see pictures of these, they sound great! I'm always looking for new treat/toys for Dorothy!

Dorothy has one white toenail and another that is sort of half white. I was told that when that happens they have the red factor gene. She also has sort of a group of white feathers in the center of her tail (underneath) close to her body, I was told that this is another tell tale sign. I'm truly not sure if this is true, just what I have been told and read. I'ts funny there is a baby male cag at the breeder that I have fallen in love with, I didn't even notice until the breeder said something but he has white toenails too. I keep picking those (wonder what that means!! LOL) I wish I could bring him home!

It wasn't me this time, but I didn't say no either!

Im so happy for her! Bless you for giving her that "forever home!" -
I have always loved amazons. I rescued a female lilac crown (she was 15) she continues to be a work in progress however she has come a long, long way. She had a horrible life when I got her and she is learning new things every day! I love my cag Dorothy dearly and she brings such joy to my life. I go between someday adding another grey or adding either a panama or Mealy. I would love to hear anyones opinion of these two species. I keep reading that the Mealy's are the gentle giants and that panamas are also gentle great birds for a family. My daughters are 12 & 15 so not too young but I would love a bird that would feel comfortable in our family. I do love the greys however I am very drawn to the "happy go lucky" nature "playful, outgoing" demeanor of the amazons. Again, I would love any information anyone might be able to give in comparing these two amazons. (I don't want to hijack thread, please feel free to pm me)

I am so sorry for your loss.

Jeffnok, I'm so glad that you asked this! Dorothy turned one on Sunday (one day before Gracie!) It sounds like Gracie is saying much more than Dorothy. Dorothy loves to whistle and is very good at it! She has literally been repeating "Hello" since Saturday over and over! I can tell she is trying to say other words but I can't understand them. Her "Hello" is getting clearer however it is still quite robotic! (at least I hope that's what I'm hearing and I don't sound like that!) LOL I get very excited when she says it, I'm hoping she adds more words to her repitore it is such fun hearing her speak. She is however quite the prolific whistler!

Dave that last red factor you posted is amazing looking! Who's bird is that?
-
Oh mylanta!! He's talking already and he's only 14 weeks old!!!

I want to thank zandische! My Dorothy just turned one today! She says Hi, Hello, she whistles up a storm. However she is more of a whistler than a talker at this point. Even her "hello" is not super clear. I was thinking that maybe she will not be such a talker but more of a whistler. I love her talking or whistling, however I have to say when Hello comes out of her mouth or she says hi when I take her nightime cover off her cage I do love it! I'm glad to hear that I could be hearing more talking sometime soon! -
Maddening sound for seemingly no reason! Help, we're going insane!!

I think Jayd said it best. This seems to be quite common for greys! Our Dorothy (will be one this month) has learned our very annoying phone ring. She knows that we go to it everytime it rings. She has then decided this is a great way to call us over. Same for the whistle I do for my dogs to go outside or to call them in from the backyard, she whistles for me. She seems to be in LOVE with whistling, she wolf whistles, the andy griffith song (she has her own spin to this) etc. I truly hope that some day we will have a grey that talks instead of just whistles however I love to hear her vocalize in all ways. I do look forward to her first words (keeping my fingers crossed) She has been saying hello but that's about it. I think that you are going to have to try and give her some other noises to copy. I know that when Dorothy started with the wolf whistle, andy griffith song and the dog's whistle she has stopped doing the phone as often. I know it can be annoying however I think this is something that we all have to embrace about our greys! -
Jeffnok, Gracie and my cag Dorothy are about the same age. I'm curious, what type of noises does she make when you leave the room? I do notice that when I leave Dorothy immediatley starts making the telephone noise. She makes the same exact noise as the phone ringing. I know that she has realized that when the phone rings I come to it so I think she does this to get me to come to her. I'm curious, what does Gracie do to call to you?
-
What a cutie! Let us know what name you choose!
-
This is a great thread, I had that same question!
-
Hi! I'm glad to hear all is well! She seems to have quite a vocabulary already! Dorothy is 11 months and not quite as vocal! She can wolf whistle, say hi sort of whistle the Andy Griffith song. She can make the phone noise, and the whistle I use to call the dogs. Her best and funniest is when she yells out "Doobie Doobie Doo!" (not sure where she got that!)

Thanks for the responses, when they are in the shady areas does this help at all with the vitamin D? Do they actually need to be directly in the sun to benefit? I am just asking because I am wondering if just being outside in the shade also has any benefits. I hope I am not sounding too confusing.
-
I am wondering if just being outside is enough sun? When it is recommended that our birds (greys in particular) need sunlight does it have to be direct sun? I have set up an area outside on our back porch with a large hanging grapevine sphere for my birds to hang out on. For most of the day it is in the shade, maybe with part of it being in the sun. Is this enough sunlight or do they actually have to be in the actual sun? I worry about them over heating. They love hanging outside with me however I may need to set up another area that is in direct sunlight.

This is one of the first things that my breeder told me. They said never allow a bird to put its beak in or around your mouth. Sometimes Dorothy sticks her beak on my lips and I freak out that something will happen to her. Never allow them to eat from what you have eaten, or use your utensils.

Welcome to you Ingrid & Waldo! It's so great to hear of someone taking in a grey with special needs. He is very blessed to have found you!

Hi! I got Dorothy a little before you got Gracie. They are around the same age though I think. I always like to read your posts because I feel like our girls are about the same as far as maturity. I haven't really gotten a bad bite from Dorothy, she is pretty gentle. HOWEVER, my amazon Kiwi has a bite like what you just described. She has never bitten me without drawing blood! It is painful!!!!! I try and stay calm however I am about to cry every time she nails me. Bandaids are always needed and there have been a couple of times that I have had a scar last weeks and weeks! The only time that I have gotten what I would call any type of true bite from Dorothy is one time when she was slipping from the java tree when we first got it and she got kind of wedged in it. She was so scared, so I'm sure that is what happened with Gracie. It was great that you gave her treats and played afterward. You and Gracie have a great relationship, it's always fun to hear you talk about her!

Learning colors at 4 mos. Please post video of that I would love to see how you do it. I would love to train Dorothy on this! Please be cautious of the interaction between your bird and the other animals. Remember you need to parent your bird just as you would a child. Make sure that you take every precaution to keep all the animals safe! I also have a fairly fearless grey and I know we have to always be deligent about safety!

I have researched and read over and over that the whole height thing about dominance is not true. I think it is difficult to get birds to behave (meaning step up etc.) when they are for instance at the top of their playstand ladder (top of cage) It is hard to manuever your hand properly etc. However I don't think that there is much truth to the dominance because of height. I totally agree with Judy that you should hold off on touching him for now. I think that passive play is the way to go. Since it sounds as if he is allowing time on your hand then perhaps sit quietly on the couch and watch some tv, or read with him on the arm of the couch. This way you could maybe snack on something (popcorn for instance, nuts etc.) and share with your cag. He will observe you as well as build trust just sitting near you (his flockmate) quietly. In time he will probably feel safe and secure enough to lower his head and allow some neck scratching. I think that many birds settle down in the evening and allow this much more easily. I would not however even attempt touching at this point. Just sit quietly next to each other and spend time together. What is his name?

That is a good thing to do if she is on your hand or arm, just rock it and she will have to correct her balance. This will distract her from biting. Every bird is very different, some more independant some more cuddly. She is still so young that she is testing her beak, independance etc. When do you plan on bringing her home, are you waiting for her to be weaned? When you say she bites do you mean "beaking " like kind of moving her beak around on you even opening it and using it to move your hand, finger etc., or do you mean actually biting you?

I'm curious as to how you are getting Skye out of the cage?
