Anyone have any suggestions on a low-fat diet alternative? My baby has to eventually transition off of Harrison's due to liver issues and he won't touch Roudybush. Thanks!
-
Has anyone else had to go through something like this? Could use some additional perspective and support. It seems like this will be a long road to recovery...

Diet and greys can be a tricky thing. I mentioned this in the Health Room, but my grey has liver issues and would rather starve than eat a low-fat Roudybush diet. He started out on seeds and transitioned to Harrison's and loved it to death. So, the point being that dietary transition can be challenging and push us to get creative. Do some online research as Morana suggested, consult with your vet, and keep tabs on your grey's weight. It can be done, but it takes time.

Choosing a name is so much fun...it'll come to you when you get to know your baby's personality. We came up with the name Linus out of the clear blue sky, but it fit perfectly! Keep us posted!

Incredible pics. What a beauty. Thanks for sharing...made me smile this morning!

Check her out! She is loving life now. Mine loves blueberries...

Thanks so much for your thoughts...the more time goes by, the more I am convinced that Linus is Rocky in parrot form! He's a fighter...still hanging on, getting a little more feisty per report of the vet...I guess he is putting up more of a fight when they are trying to administer feedings, fluids, etc! So tough for them, but good sign for us...he's getting more energy. Now the little man just needs to start eating again. We'll visit this afternoon...more updates to follow!

Hi Kevin- Sounds like you are on the right track. Greys will graze all day if you let them, so I would suggest only feeding in the morning and afternoon and not leaving pellets for the entire day. Just keep moving in the direction of pellets and keep an eye on Seuss' weight. We do fruits and veggies in the mornings, and occasionally a warm treat near bedtime with pellets. It takes time, and greys can be very stubborn about diet. Our Linus has liver issues and, when trying to switch him to a low-fat pelleted diet, would rather starve than eat it! So, I can't emphasize enough the importance of monitoring weight during the transition. A little scale is a great investment.

Well, it sounds like he's just asserting his territory...pain in the butt. Keep your hands safe!!!! LOL.

That's fabulous...I've never known of a grey to have multiple personalities...

Have you tried just opening the cage door without trying to take him out? We have used this technique with Linus...when he comes out on his own terms, it's all good. He might just be testing some limits...since he knows that he "might" get a treat out of the deal.

Hi all...an update on Linus. He looked better today! He's lost a lot of weight...down to 290, however this is improved over recent days. He's tolerating his feedings better and the nebulizer treatments seem to be helping. Still day by day, but we are encouraged. Will post pics of our little guy soon!

Any thoughts on changing her diet? A couple of natural supplements we have used...Red Palm Oil and Booster as a treat can be good for just overall health. Both are made by Heal-X. Just a thought.

Your avatar is priceless! Made me smile. Welcome!

Hi there...looks like no one has really posted to this thread in quite some time. Looks like my year-old CAG has Aspergillosis...very ill right now and may not make it. The next 24 hours are critical. Any words of advisement? We are so heartbroken for our dear Linus.
-
I have a link that might help you to gain a better understanding of aspergillosis. Here it is: http://www.avianweb.com/aspergillosis.html This may or may not have caused the liver failure...my vet isn't sure. It's kind of a "House" case, if you know what I mean.

Hi there...getting a new grey is quite the adventure! How's it going so far? If you haven't already, I would recommend a vet visit to ensure a clean bill of health. Also, did you pick up any books? If so, which ones? I found that reading, researching and talking to experienced bird owners were very helpful in navigating care for a new grey. And diet is critical, so when it's time to cross that bridge, be sure to do your homework. Best of luck with your little guy!

Thank you all for your kind words and support. About 5 weeks ago Linus went into liver failure, requiring surgery/liver biopsy. He has had several crop infections since he was a little guy however always seemed to bounce back. After surgery, unfortunately, he has not. Looks like Aspergillosis. He is hospitalized right now, being tube fed and given IV fluids, and we just hope his new regimen of treatment does the trick. The next 48 hours will be critical...the difference between him thriving, or leaving this lifetime. We pray for the former, but right now, it is really hour to hour. We are devastated, but keep the faith. He is strong.

Hi there! Am new to this site as well...isn't it funny how we get drawn to birds? I think it takes a very special person to understand and appreciate the complexities of our winged friends. Anyway, welcome!

Good morning all on this fine Super Bowl Sunday! Just wanted to introduce myself...am excited to connect with other grey lovers. My name is Alissia, and my SO Noelle and I have an almost year-old grey named Linus, who is just the sweetest little guy. Unfortunately right now he is fighting for his life...and we are praying every day for his recovery. Anyway, just wanted to say hello, and look forward to connecting with you all!
