  1. I can't answer your question but just wanted to say hello! Good luck with your new grey!
  2. Hi Jacarual! Glad to meet you and cant wait to see pics! It is really a great place here, tons of info and support. -Logan and Kihei
  3. Taken from Wikipedia, link HERE Avocado leaves contain a toxic fatty acid derivative known as persin, which in sufficient quantity can cause equine colic and, without veterinary treatment, death.[30] The symptoms include gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation around the tissues of the heart, and even death. Birds also seem to be particularly sensitive to this toxic compound. Feeding avocados or guacamole to any non-human animal should be avoided completely. Negative effects in humans seem to be primarily in allergic individuals.
  4. thanks everyone! Yes I pronounce it "ace"...he is really sweet.
  5. that was awesome! she is lucky!
  6. this is my favorite, what a gorgeous pic!
  7. yes thank you, what an amazing list. THANK GOD you guys suggested that because we eat avacado ALLLL the time and had i not read it, probably would have offered her some. <shudder>
  8. I have an avacado tree behind my sofa, across the living room from Kihei...it will never fruit, just has lots of leaves. I wonder if the leaves (if she ever did somehow get over to it, i know better than to underestimate her abilities..) would be toxic too? Off to do a google search..
  9. ohhhhh 47! That is trulllly amazing. Cant wait to get to know him
  10. thank you for having us, you guys are a blessing to someone like me, otherwise poor kihei would have to deal with a lot more follies on the part of her "bird brained" new owner lol :)

  11. thanks everyone. Pearllyn, does Alfie still have her little curl? omg i love it!
  12. hahah...she has a tinsy bit of stage fright i guess, she is so cute!
  13. Hi everyone, thanks for the encouragement, it was scary but SO thrilling at the same time..talk about a rush. Dan I posted a small account of how I came about bringing her into my family. What is written there is all i really know about her.
  14. This is the story of how I ended up with her. I was perousing craig's list, and breeder sites going back and forth between adopting an older grey, and buying a baby. I contacted many breeders in oregon, (seems there are several) and was told by all "no babies yet, in a few months we will have them". So I came back to an ad that I had found that said "16 year old African Grey, healthy and happy, looking for a forever home. Comes with cage and all supplies. $500." I responded via email, and David, her owner, called me. We chatted and chatted and really got along well. He told me he had gotten her when she was 18 months old, in Hawaii. Apparently she choose him by crawling onto his shoulder. He has had her ever since. She grew up in a family environment with him and his wife and children. His kids are gone now, and I think (im not sure) that maybe a recent break up or divorce has taken place, so David is now alone. He stated to me that as much as it breaks his heart to part with Kihei, that she is alone most of the day, and he does not feel that it is fair to her. He wanted her to go into the next chapter of her life getting the attention he felt she deserved. He told me from the beginning that she was very well socialized and had always been a happy member of his family. Until recently, apparently the lonliness she has suffered has caused her to "stop talking almost all together". Which has NOT been the case since she has been with me now for 4 days. She talks nonstop..this morning we got to hear her phone impression, quite uncanny. Anyways, he and I have emailed back and forth several times since she has been here, and he trully trully loves her, and is taking so much time to ensure her transition is a smooth one. Our family: 1 rottweiler, Ayce..who she teases mercilessly. Luckily Ayce has been exposed to a menagerie of animals is entire life so he is not aggressive or nasty in any way toward her, just very very confused. 1 chihuahua, "lu lu" who could care less. 2 Flemish giant bunnies, San Diego and Hammy, who live outside so they haven't met Ki yet. One 7 year old skin baby, Andrew. Who LOVES Kihei. Loves her. He sits next to her cage and the two of them babble away to eachother. LOL. One tolerant husband who gets whistled at by Kihei everytime her walks near or around her cage, David (previous owner) said he whistled to her a lot, so I think she is associating the male presence with this activity? So thats the story, in a nutshell.
  15. I am so excited right now I cant even speak (which is rare.) I showered and came back downstairs and my husband said "Look who's out" i looked over at her cage and saw she climbed outside of it to the top and was perched there watching me. I wanted to reinforce this, so I took her a treat. Instead of taking the treat with her beak, she put her foot out in the air toward me, so I stepped closer, and SHE GOT ON MY arm!!! I didnt know what to do and was a little frightened...so I waited a minute and told her she was perfect and offered her back to her perch, where she stepped. I am so happy right now! :D:D
  16. Well its only been a couple days, but when my sons friend knocked on the door she said "Hello?". I thought that was really cool.
  17. hi again  Kihei does not have a leg band, what does this mean? Are they all supposed to have one?
  18. When she says "hello", it sounds EXACTLY like you! What a gorgous girl. I really love her stand too.
  19. keeping fingers crossed. I am sorry.
  20. dang it...i didnt mean to scare her i took them out already. She made it pretty clear she didnt like them. One more thing, last night with her door open, i crouched down infront of her cage and was talking to her. She didnt run away or anything, but kept vomitting in her mouth and swallowing whatever the stuff was, then would do it again over and over. And while this was going on she was making little noises and moving sideways on her perch left right left right..but not away from me. I really was confused because she didnt seem aggresive or scared, but the vomitting part was strange..what would that behavior mean? Is she sick?
  21. Hi again, Yes, it does seem as if she is doing quite well, considering all things. She continues to say all kinds of things including "I wouldn't do that", "hugs?", "hello Bird"...and she whistles. Whistles and whistles and whistles, short little tunes. David, her owner said he would whistle to her a lot. Oh and she coughed a couple of times too. Sounds just like me when I cough, but I don't know if she is capable of already mimicking me after only two days? she clucks and calls my dog allll the time. Then he goes to her cage and she growles at him..LOL. Poor dog is still SO confused. Its amazing watching her hear things, then make associations. For example, yesterday a friend of my son's knocked on the door. She said "hellllo!". When we run the sink in the kitchen, she makes a sound that is water bubbling. She is incredible. I got her some new toys today, and was really excited to put them in her cage. I hung them up, and for the next hour she made a sound that is IDENTICAL to the shrieking noise a smoke detector makes when its low on batteries...REALLY LOUDLY so I took the toys out and she hasn't shrieked once. I guess she does not like things changed inside her cage. I understand. I got her some unshelled peanuts, unsalted and human grade. I also have been reading about proper diet..sounds as though nuts in excess are incredibly fattening. I am going to go in moderation with those as suggested by you guys. Question: She trembles a lot. Is that trembling fear caused? Is she cold? And her feathers are puffed out all the time, which i understand to be a intimidation posture, true? L & K
