  1. My baby parrot is around 4 months old. He is currently on 2 handfeeds a day. She takes around 10-20 cc in morning and 10-20 cc at night. She eats pellets, seeds, fruits and veggies. When do I change to 1 x handfeed a day. Or should I continue on the 2 feeds. Help is appreciated,

I wanted to teach my parrot to talk. But, I am at work all day. Do you guys recommend any CD that I can play for him when i am not home
  3. Hi everyone, 2 quick questions. My baby is on 2 handfeeds a day. She eats veggies, pellets and seeds with no problem. She is about 3 months. When do I reduce the feeds to 1x a day. She takes maybe 30 cc in moirning and at night. Then refuses more. Dont know when to reduce to once a day. Im concerned because she eats eveything outside the cage. She wont touch her food bowels in the cage. I was home from work the past 2 days and observed her in the cage. Yup, she does not eat in there. So, I am very hesistant about reducing the handfeeds. I dont want her to starve, 2nd question. I noticed today that she was sneezing clear discharge from her nose. Whats that about.
  4. When should I reduce the handfeeding. She takes about 30 cc in morning and at night. After she takes a little she refuses to take more. She rather eat her pellets. Also, should i put her bowl on the floor of cage. Will that help her eat in the cage. The other bowels are easy to get to. She just wants to climb to top of cage and sit on the comfy perch, rather then sit on the perch that is closer to the food bowls.
  5. My baby has a metal bad on its foot that says 508. What does this mean. Thanks
  6. thanks. Oustside the cage she does not stop eating. She has also been refusing the handfeeds. She takes a little then runs away and starts eating her pellets. She does the samething at night when I get home. But, once in the cage she doesnt touch anything, and rather play with her toys. I know patience is the key. But, is she learning only to eat outside the cage. Her name is darla.
  7. Just got a new baby african grey around 3 months old. Hopefully, this one is a keeper after what I went through with the last baby. The baby is on 2 handfeeds a day. She has already fledged. Quick question, Outside the cage on her perch she eats everything. Pellets, seeds, nuts, fruits veggies. But, I am concerned about when she is in her cage. She doesnt go near the food dishes. She climbs to the top perch and sits there and palys with her toys. Will she eventually eat the food in her cage. When, I first put her in the cage she did. But, she stopped. That means she doesnt eat all day. Only when I wake up in the morning and at night. Unless, she sneeks food during the day. But, the bottom of cage is clean. She doesnt drink her water either. But, she accepts 30 cc handfeed in morning and at night. Advice would be helpful.
  8. he siad he can give me another grey in 1 month time. He wants the virus to die out in my house. Or he said he can give me a blue fronted amazon baby. He said the virus does not effect this breed of bird. So, I dont know what to do. I love both breeds of birds.
  9. the breeder said he wont give him back. Its fatal.
  10. Results are in and they look gloomy. The bird has beak and feather disease. The breeder told me this a few minutes ago. Where did he get this from. The breeder told me the rest of the clutch was okay.
  11. Update on charlie. The breeder told me that Charlie looks a little better. He handfed him formula all day yesterday and saved him from dying. He rehydrated him with all the formula so he looks better. He now is going to bring the bird to his vet and do bloods and find out why he stopped eating all of a sudden. What do you think it could be?????? Its really sad, that I have to be going through all of this. I bought this bird 1 month ago. What should I do guys. I dont want to end up with a sick bird. Although, I am very bonded with this guy. What could have caused all of this.
  12. I kept seeds in cage also. He stopped eating them also. I called breeder for update. He told me that he thinks his blood sugar is low. He says I have to keep him there overnight. He said he will have his vet draw a blood sugar. I'm worried my poor babu grey won't make it. What if he doesn't make it. I've invested so much money in this little guy in the 1 month I had him. Over 2 grand. This really is horrible.
  13. Called the vet. She told me she can't figure out what's wrong. Paid 400 bucks yesterday for that answer. Now, she wants me to go to animal hospital. The breeder told me it's definilty malnoutrition. He said he will handfeed baby for me. I actually trust thus guy. He's a petexpert and all over tv. Will see.
  14. Baby grey still not eating. He is now regurgitating stuff I am giving him. I callled vet and she told me to rush him to an animal hospital. I called the breeder instead. The breeder told me not to go to hospital and to bring the baby bird to him immediatley. I brought the bird there. He told me that the bird is malnourished and needs to be handfed. So, he wants me to leave the baby with him. He said the reason he is like this is because I was so focused on only giving pellets to the baby. He said i should have left the seeds in the cage also. And eventually wean him off of seeds later. So, anyho, My baby is with him . I am so stressed.
  15. Took him to the vet. He weighs 418 grams. The vet said he his very thin at 4 months. She think he has a bacterial infection. She took throat and cloaca cultures. She put him on antibiotics. She said if the tests come back negative. Then she will have to draw blood or xrays to rule out liver or other disease. Gee Whizz. I just got the bird. Is this the norm. Wow. He doesnt look that sick. He just seems undernourished. I noticed some blood on the back of his claw. Maybe, he injured it and thats the whole problem Who knows. This is stressinf me out more then ever.
  16. hes in my sons bedroom. We have the washer and dryer in two closets in the room. The room has 4 windows. He is only in the room during the day when we are not home. I dont want to leave him downstairs when we are not home because of my dogs. Its sought of my birds quiet area. When we wake up in the morning we are usually in room anyhow.
  17. I had him around 1 month. He was totally fine about a week ago. He would climb all over the cage. He would jump at me from his perch. His poops were big. This last week he seems different. He is more puffed up then normal, and not really climbing that much. Maybe, he does. I am at work all day. But, he just seems different. When I got him a month ago the breeder told me that he is eating by himself. But, I wanted to bond with him so i started feeding him by hand. He now looks up at me and all he does is vocalize with me and eats my finger. Meaning he hold my finger and eats like a baby with that bobbing up and down. Just these past week he just seems differnet
  18. My wife informed me that she uses all unscented fabric sheets and detergents. Plus, we will go to the vet tonight. I think it maybe the weather. Will see. This is so stressful .
  19. I use fabric softer sheets and use fragrance free detergent. Thanks for the repsonses
  20. Thanks, Just worried he is sick. Just last week ago he was climbing all over the cage. This week he seems to just sit on perch puffed up. Also decrased poop. Should I take him to a vet, or is it him just adjusting to the cooler temp. I added a seed mix to his cage. He ate a little. But, just sitting there listening to my voice.
  21. Currently my bird is caged in my sons room. I also have my washer and dryer in the same room. I was just wondering would this be bad for the baby grey. I read a whole lot about toxic fumes making birds sick. The washer and dryer are brand new and it doesnt appear that any fumes are being released into air. However,I do occasionally smell a fragrant smell. Thanks
  22. Thank you all for advice. I have also noticed that his poops have decreased since yesterday. He usually takes big ones in the morning and when I get home from work. This morning it was a very little. Is this because of him not eating correctly during the day. Just getting nervous because he was hanging around bottom of cage and seems a little bit quiet. Also, he is puffed up more often for the last week. Could it also be the change in weather in NY. Its been a little bit chilly but not extremely cold. Should I keep the seeds in the cage so he gets at least sonme nutrition. Didnt think having a baby grey at 4 months old would be this stressful.lol Thanks
